      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

      Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

In Port, Under Budget, and a Sweet Low on the Horizon

Ignoring all the chafe and emotion about what the Volvo Ocean Race means, what would make a perfect event to race or just to watch?

 

Mark Twain wrote classics because his work proved meaningful to adults and children alike. An ideal sailboat race or series will be compelling for participants,organizers (sponsors?), newbies and fanatics. At least my ideal would.

 

Also, any great entertainment evolves, maybe suffers as it grows, and hopefully matures. Do any of you have a worthwhile alternate vision for the Volvo or grand prix event that could carve out some room amongst popular sport and take its place among the classics? Knut and Farr have put their vision into play. So have the guys from the America's Cup,TP52s and any number of other attempts. You got anything better?

The Atlantic Cup. Offshore and inshore, fast and close racing, interesting enough for pros and yet affordable enough that corinthians can participate. Great coverage for people who want to follow the race.

 

It is the right combination of a great organizer, great format and great platform to sail on.

I think it comes down to the boat. Boat has to survive or you fail for everybody.

...an actual grand prix round-the-world race,,where the boats -actually- race RTW whitbred style,,,maybe 3-4 pitstops -max- so they don't have to load too heavy.

There is certainly room for that race. I don't even think huge boats would be a big deal. 50 footers going downwind are lovely. From another perspective, what it seems like they could use is a support vessel that could cross the oceans with the boats and get 3rd person video when it gets rough or fast. Maybe a 90 foot, motor sailor? Doesn't sound cheap, but wouldn't that be cool to watch the offshore work?

Huge in France but doesn't seem all that interested in accommodating the Anglophone world. That said, Ellen MacArthur became a household name in the UK through this race.

 

There's a good piece on all this by Rob Weiland in the present Seahorse. "We have to accept that pro events for fully crewed yachts barely exist".

With three weeks to go before the end of the pre-registration period (July 1st), the Vendée Globe entrants list is taking shape as 19 skippers * have already confirmed their participation and a few others have expressed their will to be at the start of the race but are still working on their budgets.

Good catch! I've followed the race a few times, and always like the chics racing with their big fat bottoms (the boats obviously). The "conform with technology and the audience's expectations" part is particularly eye catching with recent events. It does seem that the Vendee people are quite interested in their event as a spectator sport, and also that they haven't changed it all up to make that happen.
