      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

I was up to 9k or so, but was getting sucked into the African coast. After gybing away and letting 225,000 boats pass it's been time to head south again - up to 193,000 now, figure on passing 50k-100k more over the next two days.

 

Still haven't figured out what DRIFTWOOD is talking about in http://forums.sailinganarchy.com/index.php?showtopic=140363&st=200#entry3947348

I cant find any group results for teams, I have set up a group called "vg2012 sailing anarchy 1" and "2" but I can't manually add members so it makes it hard to divide the groups equally, also i can only create a total of 3 groups so somebody else would need to create a couple of groups.

 

So at this stage it doesn't appear to be worth trying

Anyone else having problems with the web client confirming a course / wind angle change the the game reverting to the old heading? I've even reloaded to check it's taken then found myself off course half an hour later.

 

Not sure I want to head into the southern ocean with a malfunctioning autopilot.....

Make sure you have auto TWA switched off if you are using waypoints. If not that then no idea. I've had no problems apart from the server crashes so far.

absolutely confounding!

 

the last three days have been the worst. I couldn't buy a break.no matter what route I tried. scenario goes like this: check the forecasts, plan accordingly, get fucked.as soon as the weather update happens. absolutely amazing. and the leaders are roaring off at warp speed. they way things are going, I'll still be stuck for a day or two. almost not worth continuing unless there are hidden wormholes on the map somewhere

Had the same thing happen a couple of times, change of course confirmed even after reloading, only to have it go back to the old course shortly after. I'd figured it was a clash between PC and mobile client. I've been making sure to log out before using another PC/mobile to access the game and the problem seems to have gone away. Problem seemed worse when I had the autowind function enabled.

 

Weather looks pretty tricky in the south atlantic, been waiting for a low to get a sleigh ride east, but all that seems to be developing is a couple of ridges......

Having passed another 65k, am up to 127,000 - but two days behind the SA2012 leaders and they're so smart they'll keep it that way.

 

For the dense people like me, to join the "SAILING ANARCHY 2012" log into www.virtualregatta.com using the vendeeglobe credentials, then follow DRIFTWOOD's instructions from #205 and #265.

 

For those complaining about paying $25 and not having the server up 24/7 - shut up you whining douchebags. It's not down for more than 1/2 hour at a crack, usually in the middle of the night Froggy-time - so come back after your next porn download and all will be well. Three months entertainment for less than a lapdance (or free if you want to go slow) is a good deal in the lower 48. Sailing solo offshore is a frustrating experience, why should it be different for you?

+1 And of course, paying $25 to be two days off of the leaders seems like bad economics to me. I'm about a day and a half from the leaders and I got there for free. And I still moan about the server crashes.

WildThing, I've been tracking you since we were very close just past the Canaries. I hung on too long with with the ego trip near the African Coast but eventually bit it and headed west. I'm now around Brigand and chasing those who headed west earlier.

 

Thanks to whoever pointed out that the Gough Island mark is an ice limit. I've been thinking I had to leave it to Port. I'm looking at a more easterly route now.

And use the extension with a great graphical interface and built in routing like: http://silverlight.virtual-loup-de-mer.org/frogtools.html

Seriously, these are so much better than this virtual regatta trash. I'm playing both, but I spend no time and energy on the VR game, virtual loup de mer is where it's at.

Therefore the sailing instructions for the Virtual Vendee Globe have changed accordingly.

You can see the amendments here.

In summary, the Atlantic Ice Gate 42°00S / 005°00E - 015°00E has been moved and is now renamed the Needle Gate and is positioned at 41°00S / 012°00E - 020°00E.

 

 

p.s., With this ice gate move, I immediately lost 40000 places!!

?? In both English and French in the PDF when I just looked. Incidentally, the line plotted on the course seems to indicate that the western end of this one has to be left to starboard, unlike the others where you just need to be north of the gate at some point between the markers

Presumably to keep the game reflective of the actual race. Fair enough I think on this one, since it's the same effect it will have on the real skippers

Deep southwest is starting to shape up as an option in the extended forecasts so perhaps the Gough Island mark will have more of a bearing on the game situation than a few days ago...

Looking at those in the SA2012 group per the satellite piccies, I reckon 6times7 is in the lead followed by S/Y epoxy, but with Wing it in an interesting place: but ahead of all of us is Yodaman @ c 22.5S 25W.

 

Any advances/corrections?

 

Looks like those us in the west, 20S or more, are having or will have some light stuff to get through whilst heading SE. It seems as though we'll start picking up some reasonable wind 8am Wednesday morning French time, and hopefully it'll start honking progressively from then on.

 

My last entry here was 5 days ago, when I had VirtualRegatta News about 20NM up my chuff. At times we've had over 100NM divergence west/east, but we're converging on the same spot,and I reckon in 5 hours time he'll be up my chuff again, about 10-15NM behind. Well that's what I hope anyway.

 

Have avoided drifting buoys and semi sunk containers so far, but for all I know, in virtual terms I could be parked in someone's cockpit, or they in mine, and I'll never know. Still reckon game would be improved measureably by each boat registering at least one or two near boats, and what do the great majority of boats care for the whereabouts of the top 5 boats? Top one fine, and amongst themselves, give them that info, but for the rest of us, irrelevant.

 

But good fun, except for the moments of trepidation when logging in having been away overnight or longer without access and finding out how big the damage is .

Can I ask what program you're using in that screenshot?

ZyGrib. It's pretty good and you can set the gribs to coincide with the game gribs. Only fault is that there is no course marker nor distance between markers but that's easy enough to calculate if you set the display to mercator projection.

It's not a router. Simply a grib reader with a few extras. I have Expedition. It's great on the boat but it's pretty useless for this game as it calculates the routes on an ongoing basis (3 hour increments) whereas the game only updates every 12 hours. If you want a quick "free" routing idea of where to head then try PredictWind. It's still ongoing but it'll give an fairly accurate idea of the fastest route to a waypoint over about 7 days and it includes open60 polars..

If you want a quick "free" routing idea of where to head then try PredictWind. It's still ongoing but it'll give an fairly accurate idea of the fastest route to a waypoint over about 7 days and it includes open60 polars..

 

So far I've been using Pacotool which has given me what I want.

 

As a dinghy sailor, one thing I'm finding interesting about the game is thinking about navigation beyond the 'hard to wind, pinch a little, catch that windshift, lay to the mark' mentality . It's interesting to have to try and take whole weather systems into consideration. Obviously there's heaps of unrealistic assumpions built into the game (e.g. twice daily wind updates, 60nm wind cells, no currents) but I'm happy with that as it keeps things simpler and allows real life to continue...

I keep coming back to play this and the VOR no matter how shitty the gameplay and the interface is because although you are still playing the same game, no two editions are alike and it's good to get the old grey matter churning up possible routes and solutions to try and capitalise on what hand nature is dealing out. Winning. Forget it. I have neither the time nor the inclination to sit here 24 hours a day for 3 months just to win a frigging watch, I'll nip down to the chinese shop and buy a Casio for 5 Euros if I need one of those. it's the little private match races that go on within the game that makes it interesting for me.

While I coughed up the money for the pro sails, I'm keeping the decision making 'corinthian'. No routing tools or outside access to weather data. What irks me is the lack of weather data on the 'zoomed out' image of VR. It's very hard to get the big picture of what's coming further out.

I'm headed S and hoping that front fills in before I need to head east to clear gough island.

We can but hope. I've got a nasty feeling that where I'm heading I'll make the tail end of the good stuff and then get dropped off of the back which means either head winds or another dive to the south to catch the next low coming through.

Enjoying the current battle just behind Cyrille H (sailing as Eau Gazeuse I think) and S/Y Epoxy (sans aids - fair play!) with smellibits looking well set to take some miles out of us for the next couple of days. Yodaman still schooling us all though...

 

Looking forward to the blast through the south, lots of track left yet.

I'm hesitant to stick my head up but I seem to have a favourable scoring glitch. I'm ranked (according to my screens at least) around 13-14000th but I'm further west than Brigand and not really further south.

 

The distance to go seems to substantiate the rating but I can't see how this is being calculated correctly.

 

I'm going in the direction that I've plotted but I would expect to be around 33-34000th given those around me. It seems to me that Brigand should be showing in front of me in standings/ranking.

 

Just thought I'd note this in case there is glitch that might screw things up later on.

I agree whole heartedly,,, In fact by my calculations, I should be in front of everyone but the bloody game keeps letting all the other boats past. Definitely a glitch and it's been screwing me up since the start.

The glitch has been good for the ego - went from 234k Friday night to 19k Monday morning. Hooray for New Math! Slowly slinking backwards, shooting for westward, southern option. Hero or goat?

For those with Options suggest you check to make sure your Auto Sails is actually working. I found my trusty steed has been sailing along with the wrong sail selected and it appears Auto Sails was not working for me. The color of the option button has changed, whatever that means. It looks like they rev'd from beta to full release at some point and I suspect that changes were made. I don't mind making sail changes myself but I can't do that from 30,000 feet or while I'm working. Sent them a note but I don't have high hopes. I reselected, logged out, blah, blah, blah so maybe it will work now.

 

Oh yeah, the game interface was showing different settings and values than the Pactool extracted numbers. That's not happened before either. Maybe I just needed to reset the mess.

 

Fun times ahead in the next few days as a chute opens up towards the ice limit. Gotta get a move on to catch that wave.

In case any of you don't know about this. I've got a great little program called MB-Ruler which is brilliant for setting angles, waypoints, and distances on a standard grib viewer. It works as a semi-transparent overlay, all you have to do is set up your favourite grib resolution and set the scale from pixels to Nmiles and you are up and running. MB-Ruler

You can also overlay it on top of the game screen instead of the crap 12H and 24H guesstimator that's on there to get a better idea of rhumb lines /distances etc. It's free as well.

 

You can see the protractor and the grey angle/distance circle alnost centre screen.

OK - so I'm new to this thing but I'm confused about the projection of the chart shown on the game. It doesn't appear to have any distortion built in for the change in longitudonal lines as one heads into the south. The grid seems to be perfectly square and 1 degree seems to be 1 degree on the screen. To me this doesn't make sense when working on a mercator projection. Am I being thick?

 

It's causing me all sorts of hassle when it comes to trying to route on Expedition.....

A mercator is actually a distortion of what the earth looks like to start with. One degree IS one degree, however the game screen does interpolate and one degree lg at 50S is a shorter distance than at 20S. You can use your waypoints to prove this.

Hmmm - get that. It's just if I steer 160d then the "where are you going to be in 12 hours" thingy shows a course of 20d off the bottom of the screen. Actually - just checked that and it doesn't, the angle is a little bigger. I'll get my coat.

 

I think perhaps Expedition switches into Gnomic or something at lower latitudes. Anyone know?

Grufft I have expedition and it is crap for this game,,, forget it. I use it on the boat and it is great for continual output,,, but for a game like this... Chuck it into the rubbish bin, It's too precise for the interface we are forced to work with.

The other problem with routers like expedition or predict wind is that they're giving you a route based on continually changing forecasts. But the wind only changes every 12 hours in the game, so routing software may try to send you on a course based on winds that won't exist in the game.

Well I saw it as clear as mud BUT, What I was basically saying was that from anywhere on the globe,,, if you take a LAT measurment then that distance will translate to a LONG measurement at the same LAT,BUT... won't work for a different LAT .... SO, let's say we measure out 360 miles at 0º LAT and translate those to 360 miles on LONG at between 0º and 5º N or S,, it'll be correct as near as dammit, but if you were to translate that same measured distance to 50º N or S then it'll be !Miles! out because navigation doesn't take place on a flat chart table. What you are actually doing is solving the angles of a curved right angled triangle where the right angle is a constant but the length of the right angled side is contantly changing the further away you get from the right angle. Now if that doesn't make spaghetti out of relatively sane brain cells I don't know what will. Who needs GPS anyways?.

good try but one minute of latitude is equal to one nautical mile, anywhere on the globe. Not so for longitude.. Lat and Long are equidistant only at the equator. You can picture this best of course by looking at a polar chart of the earth.

Yep.. I know that. BUT, when you are working with a sextant at about 6.8 knots max. Who gives a fuck? Now I know that the speedies will shout about doing 400 mile days and good luck to them,,, BUT,, most of us do 150- 200 mile days and a sextant is adequate for being 60 miles out of line instead of a GPS which is exact to within 5 metres until the fucking batteries run out. I'll stick with the sextant until the friggin SUN goes out and then I'll pit my wits against this fucking game interface anyday.

There is no GOOD TRY..... what I wrote is the truth mate.- I've spent 30 years going around the planet without GPS until it was forced on me. Don't try to teach me how to navigate,,, PLEASE:::I've explained how it works,,, you interpret it however your tiny brain wishes to deal with it, and don't come back on here crying about how you don't really understand how it all works after you hit a fucking rock..

Continued from above- 1º does NOT translate to 60 miles not in LAT nor LONg unless you are at 0º---- the Equator. The further you go N or S then the distance varies... it becomes shorter so that 60 miles at the equator becomes 53 miles at 40ºN or S. Jeez. I wish it were simple again-

The "first place" boat OGT287, as of about 9:30 PDT, just passed the first ice limit buoy. Where the turbo button on this thing? Interesting to see so many of the SA boats all heading to almost the exact same place right now.
