      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Welcome.

It looks like you are having fun. You might give some thought to how well that boat will balance. I think the center of pressure is pretty far aft.

Does the mast bending way the heck forward as shown in the picture help? That just looks weird.

I think the mast bending forward will be the least weird thing on the boat, did you check the web site? That will be a very unique craft.

I think it Would be really nice to see some natural tits from a 5'10" Dutch gal, maybe 162 lbs ( i don't like them scrawny". I want a gal who can carry my Braunsveiger.

It is really strange the words that Spell check comes up with for "Braunswieger". I learned all of my German from reading along with Wagner's operas. I kind of think I have a handle on it.

I like to think I'm pretty open minded when it comes to folks trying new things. I can't call myself a Yacht Designer, but I think I understand a large portion of the basics and the fact that even the most advanced speed monsters that are out there sailing today all address the same basics.

So with stuff like this, I wonder what sort of 'basics' these designs which are 'out there' are trying to address.

On the site, it seems that it is using mostly form stability (nothing new there) with 'external water ballast' in the tubes along the hull along with 'dynamic' water ballast. I'm assuming that means it automatically adjusts to the conditions. He calls it 'Hybrid Stability' and includes an airbag at the top of the mast. <_<

The mast rotates forward in an attempt to 'open up' the forward sail. Why not just have a tensioner on the forestay? It seems to me the last place you want your mast pivoting is at the partner. And what's going to happen with the shrouds?

The one thing that does sound kind of cool is the fact that the head sail is actually two sails held close together. When reaching, they act as one sail lying against one another (in twin grooves on the forestay). When running, the two sails can open up. Of course, there are twin headstays out there now for this purpose, but I don't think they are intended to run two headsails when reaching. Something tells me this isn't anything new either.

Sounds like a lot of fucking around for not as much gain.

Bob, it's Braunsweiger... I am a liverwurst (Leberwurst) expert after all. I do not believe Wagner featured Leberwurst in any of his works.

Ish - you're right. I reviewed my catalog and also found I had forgotten the Leberwurst-Idyll, one of the most poignant odes to a sausage ever written.

Of course, there is also the masterwork, The Ring, but that refers to a form found more often in Germany. My bad.

Personally..... I think I'd just have a beer with it. It's a long walk down to the enoteca and I'd have to go right past this Czech booth that has beer including a 9% Porter that I had the other night (like I said, its a long way down to the enoteca, I had to stop for some fortification for the hike) that was darn good.

External Tequila ballast?

hmmm...that would present a conundrum. I would not want to be in a position to choose between Tequila and righting moment. Unless it's really bad tequila. If there is such a thing.

1. Consuming enough Tequila makes righting moment seem irrelevant.

2. Large tanks need baffles anyway. Maybe a series of small tanks and you empty them one at a time and refill with salt water.

3. Consuming enough Tequila makes choosing the right one seem irrelevant.

You haven't missed anything

It's ugly and loaded with weirdness

That's kinda harsh on the guy's dream but he's trying to build it with other people's money and also not posting any tits.

I did engineering for a lot of guys who assumed that they were much smarter than the engineers who designed similar equipment. Invariably it was a miserable failure and my job became scraping off the "original design" and make it work by plugging in components from the lowbrow mainstream of engineering.

Conventional wisdom is conventional but if it works then one should start by respecting that. There is plenty of room for functional, practical innovation without going bizarro. Shucks look how much better cars are now than 40 years ago.

Haven't seen any one fry liverwurst since my Kraut father was alive and in charge of what he ate. You can get essentially the same thing in a knackwürst-like size. It tends to ooze around the pan a bit. I grew up eating sausages from here

about once a week. Bratwürst (smoked and plain), weisswürst, bauernwürst, bockwürst, knackwürst and hot dogs. Let's not talk about the hams. I have given all that up, but I'm getting hungry thinking about it. Time to go heat up some tofu, collard, and mushroom stew and brown rice.

I didn't read the web site in detail, so I'm not sure if he intends the bilge keels to be permanently filled, or to fill them only when they are on the windward side.

In either case, it looks to me like he has fallen victim to some common misonceptions about water ballast. There have been a lot of water ballasted boats, and a lot of bilge keel boats, but as they've developed, they have not moved toward his configuration. Not a good sign.

It's easy to think that the volume and weight of the bilge keels acts differently than if the same volume enclosed in the hull, but the differences are minor. If, instead of the bilge keels, he just added a smoothy faired equal volume to the main hull, the would get very similar overall stability and much reduced drag.

Water ballast is used a lot in amateur-built boats, and I've seen all sorts of misconception about how it works (when it works). I've thought about it hard. I'm pretty sure it works best in a shallow-bodied, flat-floored, light displacement boat. Done right, it can give modest sailing performance, like whichever of the MacGreagors sails the best.

Once your design includes an inflating bag at the top of the mast to provide for righting... you have crossed the rubicon. Good luck!
