They look more like inspection ports to me. So he can keep track of how fast it's rotting.

Correct. You can judge the progress of the rot by when they fall off

What if they really are brake lights?  Do they come on when, say, you let go of the sheets?  

This could be the cutting edge of the future of sailing.

Er, my admiration for Manfred has just taken a bit of a hit, with this photo of his streamlined bicycle like wagon. The woman is clearly being held against her will.
