      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Who is the best Regatta Photographer?

58 posts in this topic

My vote is Leighton O'Connor!

I served as the 2012 J/30 Sugar Bowl North American Championship Regatta Chairman. Leighton O'Connor's value extends way beyond traditional photography. After each race day, he edited past midnight. The next morning, our event was published and promoted on national venues such as Sailing Anarchy. On the water, Leighton sent social media updates to Twitter, Facebook and other micro blog markets. On behalf of the J/30 National Class, New Orleans Yacht Club and Sugar Bowl Committee, thank you for making us look good!

Jan Anderson, Seattle

She comes out for all of the major races and regattas, and lots of the other ones. takes great shots of people, boats and action (and the disasters that go with)

My experience with photographers is limited, but for regattas in the North East USA, Leighton is great.

Thierry Martinez, Rick Tomlinson, Benoît Stichelbaut and Jacques Vapillon got me where I am now.

I used to add Franco Pace in the mix, but then his calendars got boring as hell.

These days I'd definitely say Christophe Launay, though.

If he stops playing around with weird toning/HDR stuff, he's got a chance.

Having worked with many professional photographers in sailing I would say that the question was quite specific in that it asked for the best 'Regatta Photographer' and not the best 'Sailing Photographer'.

Borlenghi, Launay, Lloyd and several others listed above fit into the latter. Leighton definitely fits into the former though I don't know many of the other more American ones you have mentioned. One big reason for that is that Leighton is very social media savvy and looks beyond his images and uses the event to promote his pictures as well as the other way round.

I could do without seeing his photos of his skis when he is on the piste but you take the good with the bad!

the whole question is inane

especially when the original post starts with "I served as ....yadda yadda ... self -glorification, and tales about the fotog burning the midnight oil" ... this has NOTHING at all to do with photograpy, nowt, zilch, nada, null, zero.

photography is all about catching an image, a motion, an emotion and much more, no way you will be able to say that mister X or missus Y is "the best"

of course, the only exception to the rule is Da-Woody being the ultimate best in combining cheap sagging cougar pix with self-advertisement the turbo way supported by Ed, Clean et.al. ... but no thread needed for that one either I guess, we all know by now.

Sean doesn't just take boat pictures - more of a true art form. Outstanding light & composition in his work.

I disagree.

The famous "second rate hack" is much better than photoboy.

Friendlier too.

Their prices were always high, they've become unreasonably high IMO. This is the first and only year that I did not buy Mac race pics of the boat I was on, due to price. But maybe I'm just cheap...

Love her work. Also she's done extensive sailing and, she gets in the water to gets her shots! Try putting Thierry in that situation...

Worth having a look at her website, and reading this: http://edneyap.com/2012/08/01/34th-americas-cup-world-series-event-newport-ri/
