      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

ETNZ: AC72 Boat 2- Delivered.

Recommended Posts

I know the paint job does not win the race (well maybe one could say by the size of the logos equalling cash thrown at a team) but dear god its got the same ugly looking paint job as tractor #1. But then again who cares...let it be fast I say!

Only redeeming feature atheistically is that cool looking flag. Like it.

Actually, I liked the paint job on #1.

Not as much as Prada, but then those damned Italian's boats have always come in #1 for style and pure sex appeal!

I would like the team of five approch on the black canvas circa 1995, but with a amount that emirates have paid to keep this team afloat they should get there moneys worth.

So any obvious changes?

Cut down & enclosed rear behind the rear beam.

Rocker looks a bit different, fuller aft?

I think the foredeck V is more pronounced & carried much further aft. Boat one flattened right off before the main beam, this one is still considerably V'd even aft of the main beam.

Freeboard looks similar, maybe even higher?

Hulls maybe a bit thinner? Crossbeam mount points look a bit further inboard than on boat one.

Working deck looks lowered quite a bit compared to boat one.

Deck/Grinder layout is changed, looks like front 2 further forward & a winch or the helm between the aft pair.

Well analysed - I think I see most of that. 1:45 is the money shot :P

Maybe it has asymmetrical hulls ?

Rules require symmetrical hulls except for a few small areas.

GD following his AC32 plan for success. Conservative boats that optimize his training time by getting them built and on the water before the other teams. That strategy almost got him the Cup during AC32. Lessons learned from from AC32 very well could put him over the top.

I am surprised to hear in that video that ETNZ hope to not have to take boat 1 out again. How much money for an AC72 that will only be sailed for 30 days? Man that is wasteful, and needs to change.

Please tell me what "tanalised" is.

According to SWS, It's what SanFran is renowned for, with the "t" standing for "transvestites/ transsexuals", and the rest what they get up to...and he should know  .

Pink Floyd at the end was good.

The natural reverb in that shed provided some nice epic ambience for the 'another brick in the wall' solo.

It's the spare and because they already have LR to sail against not required.

There is a significant risk involved sailing both your boats against each other for training, one big collision and it's game over.

I guess they could have had it ready to go and sailed it any time they were making mods to boat 2, but probably the will gain just as much giving the sailing team a break or doing inside stuff during these times.

If they could afford two whole sailing and shore teams it might be a different story I guess.

What was the rule that you could only sail your boat for 30 days.....was that between certain dates? Will they be allowed to do two boat testing if they want? I wonder if they have the crew for that type of testing.

At the end of the cup, I wonder what the budget percentages will look like:

i.e.

Boat development and building - 45%

Wing development and building - 10%

Under water appendages development and building - 10%

Crew salary and admin expenses - 35%

oh that is a Boat 2 hull behind the group shot, I'd kind of assumed it was Boat 1.

Given that I guess the apparently higher V on the deck may have been optical illusion or because of the hull being canted on the trailer.

Would be kind of funny if Boat 2 winds up just being Boat 1 with a cut down rear...

No money wasted on boat #1. It was always a best-cut test platform and potential backup. We all know that boat #2 is a big development on the first boat. From now on #1 is a reserve, hopefully never to be needed.

As for two-boat testing, there has been abundant comment here of the sheer cost and logistics inherent in sailing two boats simultaneously.

In a recent Scuttlebutt 'monthly update' it was said (although not a direct quote as I recall) that AR will not be two-boating either.

Even RC suggested yesterday to Stuart S that OR may not do much of it, although he did imply there will be some kit-build leapfrogging.

Interesting that NZ2 will start off with W1. It could suggest that interchangeability is important in their designs.

I think Russ has gotten a little bit arrogant over the years, starting to believe his own press.

He could however still pull this out of the bag, given the huge head start that OR had at the beginning of the cup cycle.

GD has already said that there won't be a huge amount of visible difference.

I have been expecting finer amas, so will be interested to see if that is the case once we get more pics.

Am I right to observe that the new boat has finer bows?

I can't tell from the photos TC, but it is what I have been expecting all along (see post above).

I personally think that boat #1 was not only a test bed, but an insurance policy in case they couldn't achieve flight as stably as they have.

With flight achieved stably, they (if my thinking is correct) can remove some of the volume in an attempt to reduce drag, since they not longer require said insurance.

Your thoughts?

I was just referrring to the guy's comment. That they hope to never bring boat 1 out again. So that is a brand new AC72 with will only 30 days of sailing on it. Probably never sail again. As fast and cool as these 72s are, in the end they are just to much money to maintain and use past a brief testing life. Just like the original USA-17 rotting in the sun on a San Fran dock. Where as the 12 meters and even some IACC boats found 2nd lives in private collections or as charter boats. Hell even the AC45's can maybe find a 2nd life, but the AC72's? How can they? They are to huge. Just a sad waste of a cool boat.

Yup, the only way I see them surviving is if the AC72 class is used for the next AC.

Given what Russ said in his recent interview, this is unlikely.

At the end of this cup a huge amount of design and research and development work will have been done on AC72's, all sorts of analysis tools developed, and a ton of performance data accumulated - so the marginal cost of building more AC72's will have dropped dramatically. There will also be 8 AC72's in the world, and probably 8 AC72 wings as well. These old AC72's would likely be relatively cheap for future syndicates to use as test and training mules for future campaigns. Overall retaining the AC72's for another cup cycle might actually be cheaper than doing a clean-sheet design on a 60 foot multi, particularly if some effort is put into more efficient and cheaper shore handling of the boats so that they don't need to be stepped every time they are sailed.

A much larger building and yard space is required next to the launch area because of the huge footprint the A72's need ..

Other major costs with the AC72's is in the big team and time needed to launch and retrieve the beasts ..

According to GD they need 40 people and 1.5 hours to launch and another 1.5 hours to retrieve them because of the wings ..

Maybe if they dispensed with the wings the AC72's could be retained but the big foot print would still be a problem ..

This is what we should be talking about.

But Nav's eyes are better than mine and he has nailed all these that I missed.

Nothing wrong with making fun of homosexuals: we make fun of other nationalities just for being, and they poke make fun of us in return. And don't be so presumptuous about "speaking" for "most people from NZ".

There is a large majority opposed to the proposal to legalise same-sex "marriage" in NZ.

Your curious choice of words betrays your predisposition, with your condescending claim that "we welcome all types here" laughable in it's dishonesty. Like every other nation on the planet, we are selective in who we "welcome" here.

The majority of NZ'ers accept that the institution of matrimony is between a man and a woman, not between William and Robert whose civil union is already recognised under existing NZ legislation. So why don't you get tanalised!!

You are the vocal 0.1% who give P-H reason to take issue with the best little country in the world.

Here we have it folks, probably an all time SA classic, Indio saying that homosexuality is a nationality.

Go fuck yourself Indio. I'm sure no one else will.

Please tell me what "tanalised" is.

According to SWS, It's what SanFran is renowned for, with the "t" standing for "transvestites/ transsexuals", and the rest what they get up to...and he should know :lol:/> .

I know SWS doesn't need me to stand up for him, but please excuse my fellow country man "Indio" for his 1000th homophobic comment on SA.

Please believe me when I say that most people from NZ are not so afraid people outside the norm.

Another fucking sanctimonious apologist!! What is it with some of you people who feel the need to apologise for others? Nothing wrong with making fun of homosexuals: we make fun of other nationalities just for being, and they poke make fun of us in return. And don't be so presumptuous about "speaking" for "most people from NZ".

And people took exception to me when I started calling you the leader of the Kiwi Religious Right.

Will be interesting to see if The Ed gives you a nice long time out for the above comments about making fun of homosexuals.

And to the rest of the Kiwi's here - I know damn well that Indio does not represent the viewpoint of your country.

What is so special about homosexuals that we can't poke fun at them, the same way we poke fun at the French, the English, yes the Americans, Australians, soccer players, etc, the same way others poke fun at us? There's the strong stench of hypocrisy permeating through all the posts criticising moi.

Freedom of speech only applies to some elements of your society huh!?!? You're a hypocrite of the worst kind.

Big fan of SA, esp the forums. Long time reader / first time poster.

Indio - you're a f***ing idiot. This is a new low even for some of the idiots who post on this site.

You are the vocal 0.1% who give P-H reason to take issue with the best little country in the world.

Even the Germans and Canadians agree - NZ number one for freedom and civil liberties:

http://crooksandliar...n-earth-isnt-us

"The survey measured the degree to which people are free to enjoy classic civil liberties - freedom of speech, religion, individual economic choice, and association and assembly - in each country surveyed, as well as indicators of crime and violence, freedom of movement, legal discrimination against homosexuals, and women's freedoms. Pretty extensive stuff."

Can we get back to a very cool second ETNZ / RNZYS boat?

+1

Indio has ruined a potentially awesome topic with his constant drivel.

I am surprised at the amount of freeboard boat 2 has retained. Using W1 for a while seems like a really good move.

Clearly, you do not understand the difference between discussing the vague generalities of a nationality versus the discussion of a personal sexual preference.

Perhaps you will now get a lesson in behaving appropriately towards the issue of sexual preference, on an American owned and run sailing site, where the owner is pretty liberal, and has just about zero tolerance for those who are disrespectful on this subject.

There is a huge difference between poking fun in a vague way at a nationality, and the sort of hate speech in which you engage about a personal sexual preference.

Now back to orginally scheduled programming.

Interesting that NZ2 will start off with W1. It could suggest that interchangeability is important in their designs.

when you are testing it's best to only change one thing at a time.

that boat the antithesis of a donkey.

the paint job is like their branding. you don't change your branding mid stream, and i like red bows and black aft section. it's a good color scheme for a bad ass race cat.

Indio, where have you been getting your information about NZers opposed to Same sex marriage. Perhaps Ian Wishart and Investigate magazine.

Both the last NZHerald Key Research Poll (53.9% to 38.1) and the TVNZ Colmar Brunton poll (63% to 31) in favour of same sex marriage.

I think also that any team would be INSANE to not have the wings fit either of their boats.

Lose the wing off your boat and you are toast if you can't use the wing off the other boat.

Be good if the beams, foils, etc fitted too,

then you would be racing next day!

Might be tempted to take the opponent out like dodgems though!

I don't know what a sanctimonious apologist!! is but if that is what I am for taking issue with your repeated homophobic statements, then oh well.

If I knew how to use this site properly then I could pull up your multipul statements, but alas I have a job and limited time to learn how.

I made no reference to marriage, so nice leap there. Haters gotta hate.

Sorry to all for taking this away from how cool the NZ boat is (more sanctimonious apologist stuff). I am so proud of my home nation for many great achievements and this is one of them. Win, lose or draw, this is already a great sucsess.

I will be in San Fran (renowned as the home of the Greatful Dead) to see the deal go down in September.

You clearly don't get it, but we knew that a long time ago.

Not surprising to see so many others speak out against your homophobic bias, and I see others equally as biased (TC) have crawled back under their rock.

Take a hint, dumbass.

Well this breaking news hit the original thread first, so here goes.

Top item on TV1 sports tonight. Should be available on their site in a few hours. Others in the small media group appeared to be TV3, Richard Gladwell and Dana J.

Dalts isn't being shy. Talking about the team ..... a quote along the lines of "This is a tight unit. The tightest I've ever been involved with in the America's Cup. I think its because they can smell blood!"

Great views of the assembly process. I don't have an accurate handle of how the original hull connecting members were set up but an immediate impression of the bare skeleton is that the new version is more refined, less bulky.
