      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Bob,

 

You frequently stress that "its what the client wanted." Why do you bother? I mean, assuming most of your clients have the attention to detail that Ish does, you could sell them anything and tell them it WAS what they asked for. I realize I have just simplified your life. You can thank me later.

Anom: I had a client like that once. He was Canadian. He had a lot of money. But he could not read drawings at all. He would just nod and smile. Every time I met him at the boatyard it was total surprise to him. "Oh,,,that's what I'm getting."

I once asked someone in Burrard Civic what they thought the purpose of those um, waterslides, ramps, whatever, in the stern of that thing were for he said "landing that big salmon!"

 

Bet that thing would really move out w/a tall carbon rig and deep blade w/tungsten bulb.

 

 

If by "move out" you mean "sink amazingly quickly" you might be right.

 

 

No no no. Saws-all out the interior glass in carbon sandwich bulkheads + 8' carbon prod what a sleeper!

This just showed up in my marina. It's power but it's so unusual that I thought it deserved posting here. It made me think of Gardens old Tlingit although it's 1/3 the size and appears designed for high speed - 300 Merc and those multiple transverse lifting strakes or whatever the offshore powerboat guys call them.

 

I admire it simply for being so unusual.

 

By curious chance, the old aluminium Russian Volga hydrofoiler is on the other side of the marina - two of the strangest powerboats in the city only 5 docks apart.

I think the chopped bow and oversized house make that one a candidate for Admiration by the Society.

 

It's pretty cool but probably not all that fast by powerboat standards. More like an ocean racer crossed with a minivan.

We saw a huge contemporary schooner heading up Howe Sound today. Looked to be 125' - 140', dark blue hull, white deck and equal height masts. Biggest sailboat I can remember seeing in local waters - made Oriole look pretty ordinary size.

 

Any of the locals know anything about it?

We saw a huge contemporary schooner heading up Howe Sound today. Looked to be 125' - 140', dark blue hull, white deck and equal height masts. Biggest sailboat I can remember seeing in local waters - made Oriole look pretty ordinary size.

 

Any of the locals know anything about it?

 

We saw that going in to Teakerne Arm a year or three ago. I think it was flying a Tax Haven flag.

M5 is in town arm, speaking of big boats, but weirdly it is so well proportioned that it doesn't look huge, just has miniature people on board. Weird.

I see what you mean about M5. I just ogled a video of it and you can't actually see the crew they're so ant-like. I've always thought it's a sign of a nicely drawn boat that you can't tell how big it is without something to scale it to.

Would save a shit load of sanding and Deks Olje or Awlwood varnishing prep, that's for sure. But would it be as satisfying?

Satisfying? Sitting here with my fingers permanently stained with Awlwood, which makes me look like I have a grotesque birthmark across both hands, I feel precious little satisfaction. But it will come. Only so many microns to go and it'll all be over . . .

Greetings from Canet-en-Roussillion…

The first time I saw Mirabella V she was anchored off a nice cove at Nisos Paros. This was pre the Pendennis, Falmouth refit. That year I also witnessed first-hand the sails might of the Maltese Falcon – uber canvass power made real.

I’m now here in a key French centre for Multihulls, Catana have a large factory here, though not pushing much out above 50ft currently… there are a fair few new Balti’s awaiting owner pick-up…

Tis busy, busy here in le Zone Technique with daily crane movements getting floaty stuff ready for the Med’ summer season. All things multihull service are handled by Pascal and his boyz at BMS.

Also Bernard Gallay brokers a fair few boats on the local marina.

Atkin wrote in Practical Small Boat Designs that the original Florence Oakland was lost to fire, and the owners had a duplicate built. So I guess they liked it fine.

Burma... sweetest looking Motorsailer ever. RO Wilson. Looks like they painted her black?!? She was sort of yellowy beige until last year.

 

 

 

In the same motorsailer dept. While Burma is a sweet sweet ride, I did fall in love at first sight after seeing Rhodes' Sea Diamond up close after a major reft a bunch of years ago. If I was megayacht rich, Sea Diamond would be just fine.

The S&S Motorsailers of that era were plagiarized from Rhodes. I guess everyone borrowed from each other, and William Hand and RO Wilson certainly defined the form from the era. Rhodes extended on their work and drew a whole series of amazing Motorsailers going from 50 to over 100'. The S&S copies are all nice because they are basically copycats of the Rhodes boats! That said I would be plenty proud to pull into harbors with a mint vintage S&S/A&R double ender motorsailer.

First off, my personal fave… the very Dutch ‘AXONITE’ the K&M69 is directly berthed opposite us, yes I was invited been on-board for a looksee (obviously)…. Johan who I worked with last year painted her.

On the next dock over each one its own mini-marina...we have a J’BOAT and super elegant 84 Van de Stadt HEIDENSKIP, the yacht my boss of last year almost bought…she’s looking lovely and well cared for and is still on market with someone who’s got access to deep pockets…

I remember when the Rocket 40 first came onto Lake Macquarie, originally Buckle Up, to become Redback.

The new owners wanted to confirm / dispel a rumour that it was possible to water-ski behind the boat.

So off they go down to just off the 16's club, put a guy in the water with 2 skis, put up a chute, and from a deep water start, pulled the guy across the lake skiing.

 

20?? years later, there may only be 2-3 yachts now on the lake with that ability...

Saw one for sale on yachtworld yrs ago, fell in love with it!!! All electric running rigging of course among other cool things like duel carbon wheels/the dink garage/portable bbq stearn deck...

 

Laurie Davidson helped design it so you know it's balanced and sails like a rocket...

 

Anyways, those lotto tickets ever pay off, I'm getting one of these for sail and a Pershing 66ish for my stinkpot needs...of course both will have Capt/stewardess to make sure we don't run into anything or my glass doesn't lose its ice to liquid ratio...

Kinda found of Davidson 50 pilot saloon too, though its traditional & not anything spectacular...I think I confuse Dibley brand with Laurie Davidson branded boats at times; your patience is appreciated.

 

I see you're doing a Dibley Commander 100plus footer...I suppose it flattens out 15footers on the nose, surfs down Mavericks legendary waves & does circles around the likes of "The Reagan" at full hull speed though the Commander 100plus is fully reefed otherwise the wake of the Dibley Commander 100plus doing circles makes The Reagan ride fetchy, right??? J/k..

 

Keep on keepin on fine folks at Dibley Marine...you give me great material to return conversation with island packet owners LOL...l always ask them why they settled for an island packet when they could/should have bought a Dibley...

I have been enjoying watching the restoration of this Garden Eel on the owner's Facebook.

Two crew sitting to leeward might explain the angle of heel. Speed, not so much.

I worked at Pijnen and built this puppy (Hull and deck). The owner wanted a real offshore boat , he sails this solo from Holland to Norway etc, hence the higher freeboard. And it has a little bulwark.

Other then that, he keeps nothing in the boat, sails with almost empty tanks. He really got the bug.

I remember when the Rocket 40 first came onto Lake Macquarie, originally Buckle Up, to become Redback.

The new owners wanted to confirm / dispel a rumour that it was possible to water-ski behind the boat.

So off they go down to just off the 16's club, put a guy in the water with 2 skis, put up a chute, and from a deep water start, pulled the guy across the lake skiing.

 

20?? years later, there may only be 2-3 yachts now on the lake with that ability...

 

My son did a passage on a Rocket 50 cruising boat from Brisbane to Opua last year. Great boat , only finished building in 2011, features in Jim Young's book.

I first met those guys in 2011 in Tonga,It was their maiden voyage .... they'd come up in a system and had 26 knots on the log on the burst all loaded up .

Looks like Laurie Davidson will be staying at my shack for a night next month. That should be fun. He's lining up a trip to the PNW.

 

How cool is that!

We've somewhere between 1500 and 2000 hours aboard one of his 1975 designs this season, not bad for weekend warriors I think. Paid for it , gotta use it eh.

I've also had a few miles on Riada II and Grand Prix( 46 and 47 ft) Just great ocean boats , lazy eat up the miles.

fantastic boat , refitted and maintained without regard to expense and sitting on the market here in Auckland, no one wants her. She's a steal for what she is. We didn't do any 200 mile days on that noumea/ brisbane trip but we did do a very lazy 110 miles in 12 hours before the breeze dropped away.

Easy easy easy.

JBE: I have invited Kim u for dinner with Laurie. Kim is such a keen follower of yacht design that thought he'd appreciate the invite. He and Laurie will get along great.
