      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Don't think WOXI is worried about it (the front). AT 20+knots she'll be home in time for tea...

Holy shit.... almost 23 knots and way way out front. I thought she snuck through a light air hole being skiny but not so.

There is only one boat currently in Storm Bay and it is recording 20 from 038. 32 recorded at Tasman Island.

WO should finish somewhere around 2000 Saturday so no storm worries there.

Look for something around 50 ft to turn right just in the nick of time and come screaming up Storm Bay at 20+ knots.

Storm Bay Forecast

View the current warnings for Tasmania

Forecast issued at 10:46 am EDT on Saturday 28 December 2013.

Weather Situation

A ridge of high pressure lies to the east of Tasmanian as a trough and cold front approach the state from the west.

The trough and front are expected to cross later this afternoon and evening with an associated low to pass to the south of the state tonight.

This low will deepen as it moves further away to the southeast on Sunday, maintaining a strong west to southwesterly flow over Tasmania.

A ridge will extend to the north of the state later on Sunday, then persist on Monday with a front embedded in the westerly flow to cross during the afternoon.

The high centre moves out over the Tasman Sea later on Tuesday.

Well Estar I'm not strictly using a weather service, just my own calculations based on what is available from BOM.

The cold front has slowed down and is being pushed South. Flinders Island will only see the very top of it late Saturday night in the form of NW breeze veering to W. There shouldn't be too much carnage amongst a fleet heading South. It will be daylight Sunday before the NE coast of Tasmania sees a southerly. The winner looks like being someone who can turn right just in time and sail up the river at full speed before a 30 knot southerly.

Maybe a TP52 ?

This map is only 2 hours old.

Hey, Clean... Are you likely to still be around when (if) Black Adder gets there? They oughta get some swag just for being committed enough to get there. At the rate they've been going, they'll be DFL by a couple days.

I leave around noon on the second, just keep me posted and if they beat my plane here, I'll be there to give them whatever I can save.

Clean, If you have a spare hour, there's not much more relaxing than www.larkdistillery.com.au/ in Davey St, a short walk from Salamanca.

Oats showing 4 knots more boat speed than Loyal and is now 50nm in front with less than 100nm to go to the finish.

Record has been lost so I hope they are throttling off and just get her in safely in first place.

Could be the wind angle but looks like BJ has finally got past Giacomo. The more agressive sea state will probably suit the heavier BJ from now too. Currently sitting in 4th spot

Looks like the first three are pretty firmly in place.

Good race between WT, BG, GIA and BJ happening though.

WOXI now looking good for the double if they do manage to get in prior to the westerly front hitting and on present ETA they will, but I'd guess they'll be an hour or two later. They have a real incentive to put the hammer down to minimise the risk they spend a lotta time in the westerly - there's a serious weather gate and at present only WOXI looks capable of getting through it..

Yeah I didn't say they where throttling off, just saying they should. I just looked again and saw that 23 too and cracked a big smile. Being on the deck of WOXI right now would be one best places in the world to be, the mood would be electric!

Currently 14 knots from 030 in Storm Bay and roughly 30 from NNE at Tasman Island.

Anyone who has to punch into a big NW breeze to finish will lose many places. WO does have a good chance of beating it in. Boats like Beau Geste, Wild Thing and Giacomo might do it tough up the Derwent.

Do they get sunfish in that area ?

Anyone for a forecast for 2014 Hobart yet?

Esmit come down for a crack, Lahana's new owner bring her back after mods and someone charters Leopard so we see every 100ft maxi in the same race?

Where else will Oats have foils?

There are some really strangely shaped holes up the front of WO I saw at the start. I'll try and find some pics.

Yo Clean! What do I win for picking the first three places back on page four of this thread?

Before we knew if oats was going to use DIY DSS?

Before we knew if it was old mast or new on Oats?

I called the split between Loyal and Rags at two or three hours, that should be around the money too!

And all this from my work desktop when I should have been working armchair 10 days ago. I'm not on the good book.

Beau Geste just passed GIA and she'll get BJ too in the next couple of hours. That'll push her into 4th on the line.

McConaghy Boats leading the way in the Rolex Sydney Hobart

Hobart, Tasmania (28 December 2013) - As the lead boats head for the home stretch in the exhilarating 2013 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, Bob Oatley’s WILD OATS XI (“WOXI”) looks to have an unassailable lead over perhaps the most competitive fleet ever assembled for the historic race.

Despite trailing the newer and more powerful custom 100-foot PERPETUAL LOYAL for much of the race, WOXI’s crew showed near-flawless execution of their navigational and sailing plans overnight to open up a 26 NM lead over Anthony Bell’s ‘new kid on the block.’ With a powerful Nor’easter developing over the fleet, Wild Oats XI is now screaming toward Storm Bay; the McConaghy Boats-built Reichel/Pugh design is averaging over 22 knots with no sign of backing off the throttle. Meanwhile, Perpetual Loyal is sailing at a more pedestrian 16.5 knots, her hopes of catching Wild Oats XI diminishing by the minute.

Gale force winds of up to 45 knots are predicted later tonight or early Sunday, which may favor the smaller boats fighting for handicap placings - provided they can stand up to the sporty conditions. One of those boats has seen much worse in her nearly 30 years of life - she’s Roger Hickman's historic McConaghy-built Wild Rose (ex-Wild Oats), and she currently leads the fleet overall on both IRC and ORCi handicap. Separated by almost 25 years, another McConaghy-built star performer, the 55 foot Reichel/Pugh Wedgetail (ex-Yendys), also looks to have a strong chance at a podium finish on both handicap schemes.

The newest boat out of the McConaghy stable is Ker 46 Patrice, who currently leads her division on IRC, trailing another McConaghy/Ker comboKerumba for ORCi class honors. Finally, the new Ker 40 Midnight Rambler is fighting for position as well, and she looks strong for a solid placing on the handicap leaderboard.

It will be a long night ahead for many of the smaller boats, and all of us at McConaghy wish a safe crossing to the entire fleet. We will continue to bring you constant updates from the finish line here in Tasmania as well as on-board call-ins with many of the team navigators via our Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/mcconaghyboats.

McConaghy Boats Special Reporter and Sailing Anarchy Senior Editor “Mr. Clean” spoke to Michael “Cocko” Coxen about the fleet, the conditions, and this historic race in an informative 16-minute interview recorded this morning, click here to listen to the interview

And for a bit of fun and luck, we’ve just launched a Sydney-Hobart contest to win some great swag from McConaghy and Sailing Anarchy; Click Here for the rules and conditions, and good luck!
