      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Don't forget the new Beau Geste, a completely purpose built Botin 80 ocean racer campaigned by Karl Kwok and skippered by Gavinn Brady. Actually think they will beat Wild Thing and Lahana. The new Ichi Bahn Carkeek 60 worth watching as well.

Lahana still not entered so will be Beau Geste v Wild thing and zefiro.

Be interesting to see Giacomo v Ichi Ban and Beau Geste v Giacomo if it blows

Lahana is not going at all!!

That's one of the most detailed inventory listings I've ever seen :o Big price drop from $1m a few months ago... Shame it's not racing this year.

I would just like to buy the container and tools, but couldn't even afford that atm................

Someone told me that the Sydney to Hobart has the best mainstream media coverage of any race in the world... is this true?

If Formula 1 was covered the same way that Channel 7 covers the Sydney to Hobart, then live coverage would end after the first lap and the commentators would be completely befuddled by pit stops because they would be unable to comprehend that the car in front might not actually be winning the race.

The start is well covered from a spectacle point of view, but coverage of the actual sailing aspects of the race or of anything but line honours is pretty pathetic. Even the web tracker is designed to drive people away screaming!

If you look at the courses on the CYCA site Macquarie point looks good

I think we call that "Mrs Maquaries Chair"

its a hell of a chair built by convict labour poms out of rocks, good for the start/finish

So did Oats lose the rig this morning or did it just compress around the gooseneck? A few unsubstantiated rumours heard today.

Better now than when chasing Loyal

Let's hope Oats is ok all I want is the show down between Loyal (Speedboat) and Oats, if it doesn't happen this time it never will. Who said Wild Thing, kidding aren't you, they will be doing well to stay ahead of the new Beau Geste. The Oats vs Loyal showdown is starting to reach fever pitch, the early punters all reckon Oats will be too good but Loyal is gaining momentum as the more powerful boat in the right conditions, can't wait to see what the Line Honours Odds are..

Sorry Scanas didn't realise you were joking. LOL, the others will fall over and WT will win just to prove us wrong. In all seriousness if it's at all rough WT usually breaks something and retires but for the sake of seeing how they all perform let's hope they all make it a great race.

If you were into professional gambling you'd get some money on Loyal now before Joe punter gets involved and then just before the start put enough down on Oats to cover the original bet. Loyal's odds will only get shorter as we get closer and Oat's odds longer.

Confirm. I saw Ricko Saturday night, he said they had some "issues" in the gooseneck area. Southern's flew a team in Sunday night to fix it. And no I won't elaborate on the "issues". Until someone else does first!

No official Hobart betting opened yet and with 6 weeks to go Oats will make the necessary repairs I would have thought.. However Chinese whispers have known to tip Punters..! LOL

Yeah for a tune up sail only. That was their first proper full crew session with the new rig.

If it was underengineered in that area, or pushing he limits, you'd want good data that the rest of spar is not the same.

Would be great to see them all have a great race, then we can finally settle who the better boat is.

This would have to be the best super maxi showdown ever. Shame ICAP and the old Alfa couldn't join the show.

Cheers

I don't think its that big a deal guys.

put it this way - the mast is in ONE piece - its not the Wild Thing two piece mast saga from a couple of years back - I didn't see any duct tape or tubes of 5minute epoxy.

its more likely a bit of fine tuning and modification….

Not sure what they paid for it but its an awesome looking bit of gear

Bloody oath! THAT would be a great race and settle the score. Still got 5 100 footers and

3 80 footers on the line, could be some carnage!

Assuming the clipper fleet is on the 2nd Start line? Anyone know?

may be true, but 'large sea creatures' excuses do not only belong to Wild Thing.

the year WOxi was trailing Wharro into Bass Strait she was attacked and keel-carried a Shark !

That being the reason given for Wild Thing not being behind, this preceded Oats being turboed up considerably before the next years race (well annual WO press releases/publicity) , they were well aware that their year to year Hobart line honours gig was far from a sure thing.

fairs fair

Yes and with the mods they have done they expect to hit 50 Knots..! What hope has Wild Oats got..? The statement of 49 Knots has been discussed in the Speedboat thread, nobody believes it, the Volvo 70's hit 40 Knots for a moment but that's it. As for 49 Knots if they believe that they witnessed a GPS malfunction imo.

WO rig sorted?

It looks more serious that it looks, mast is completely disassembled and placed under a temporary structure inside the shed. Southern Spars HazMats boys working on it full time with heat guns etc...

Semi related, but how do bookies set their odds for an event that they don't normally cover such as S2H? Do they have a research team that will study recent form and incidents such as WOXI's mast?

As for the odds the betting authorities have their contacts and then they apply a buffer factor on their field analysis. The interesting one will no doubt be Loyal. Oats will start favourite and will be in good shape or they will withdraw if there are issues with the Rig, I don't see that happening. Oats is a well oiled machine and will make the start line, money is no object. Loyal's odds will change with the weather forecasts rightly or wrongly. A big sled ride would really throw the bookies, this Hobart is shaping to be the one that could restore a broader following and some interest for line honours, lets hope it does just that.

My impression is that the bookies base their odds mostly on the bets, rather than any analysis. They are in the business of taking bets, not making bets, so they make sure that the losers are going to pay in more than the winners are going to take out.

Yes true too but you have to some understanding of the boats potential to win line honours to establish the odds. But yes in terms of the Hobart you are correct. Line Honours usually starts with Oats as favourite and they work their way back, but weather conditions could have the punters jumping on Loyal. Will be interesting to see how it pans out this time around.

What's Wild Thing Paying? :-)

Seriously though its starting to look good for Loyal with oats shenanigans with the mast :-(

No odds out yet, I reckon Wild Thing would be $8 upwards, Ragamuffin $5, Oats and Loyal sharing favouritism or to be determined by the punters preferences. Nearly impossible for Wild Thing to win for a few reasons:

1. They can't rely on the top 3 boats to break, they usually break something first, history will verify that.

2. They have 3 faster boats ahead of them that they need to beat over the line.

3. Their best chance is rather how Loyal beat Oats, have the top 3 boats bunched up close and parked and they sail around them (They need to be within striking distance to do this)

4. The leading boats are getting faster every year, WT is also now faster but not at the rate the others have progressed and is the oldest boat now in terms of design.

5. My theory and I know Wharro, he'll take a punt on a strategy or course that is different to the others and hope that they are wrong and he is right.

6. I have left Beau Geste out of the equation but if my hunch if correct they'll beat WT over the line.
