      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Identify Yourself or Get Tossed!!!

295 posts in this topic

The ship has sailed in these forums. Sorting the 50,000 and purging those whose identity is not clear would be an endless task.

Even folks like me whose identity is allegedly simple to trace are not always who we claim to be.

The clever personalized posting names can remain. Certainly they are part of the charm of the place.

I think this forum would be best served by a rule that no posts can be made after a certain date except by those who have registered under a new system where each writer is clearly identified on the profile page.

For those of us who would like to keep our current accounts, I am certain that could be accomplished even if it takes a small administrative fee to shuffle things around on the system.

If the lawsuit kills this site, I hope whoever starts a replacement requires personal accountability for each post.

Summary??

Kidding around and even writing mean stuff can be fun, entertaining, and even sometimes productive

But the anonymity invites indecent liars to fearlessly publish their drivel.

The ability to anonymously sling shit has to be cut off!!

Having everybody give up their name and address isn't exactly anarchy is it??

It's not anarchy but it does require some accountability and I like the idea. Might get rid of a weasel or two.

Dunno. I'm a bit conflicted.

I'm a bit wary on some forums about making my identity too obvious, this isn't one of them admittedly. There's a forum where I work which has just started to require people to sign up identifiably, and because there's something of a reputation for a bullying culture in some parts of the org posting numbers have collapsed.

On the other hand the world would probably be a better place without much of the nonsense and worse that gets posted here by people secure in the knowledge that they won't collect the fistful of knuckles they'd probably get if they said it to someone face to face. I don't have an easy answer.

If I'm trying to make a point where of my real name means something or if I think someone else is hiding behind anonymity unfairly, I just sign my name in my post. Real names carry weight.

Serriously? Gov, if you require that you are going to be talking to yourself. Do you really want to trust these guys either with Real data or god for bid your personal info?? I understand that some of us attract socks with every post, but that seems to be some of the charm of this place to most of the lurkers and lite posters around here. Been here since the big splash and I Like the place, but there is really no way I would give up pers info beyond a junk email address and maybe a first name. Heck I have enough trouble giving that stuff to amazon and the like....

Most of us did this voluntarily on the PD forum. IMO it cleaned things up and raised the quality of the content - you are more careful what you post when everyone knows who you are (stating the obvious). It's just names or real nicknames - no other personal data unless you offer it.

My observation is that PD currently runs about 60% of the "Users Online" as here (300 vs. 500), but has a small fraction of the post count. That seems to be the trade off - lots more to read here but of lower quality/relevance. Take out GA, PA and these threads that have very little to do with sailing and I suspect the post counts would be proportional.

This isn't aimed at anybody in particular

Well actually it couldn't be.....

It isn't aimed at any set of posts in any particular thread.

I get not wanting to reveal yourself to the world.

Do shooting from the hip with brainstorming style new rules and methods, here is my current idea.

£££££££'nmlkjk

I would also trust a moderator to have the identities and a rule where anyone who is attacked in a post has the RIGHT to ask and be told the identity of the person who posted the defamation.

No revealing identities to spammers or even to somebody who just wants to know who wrote "that wonderfully clever post."

The moderator would have to agree it is an attack or the moderator would decline to reveal the posters identity.

First step under today's rules??

Any post by an anonymous poster would be deleted if ANYONE requested it be deleted.

The post would remain if the writer agreed to "sign the post."

Too many really strange wierdos here and on the net in general to post real identities on a public forum. Too easy for someone with a grudge or criminal intent to stalk or otherwise harrase you in real life.

As is common many folks here know who I am and if i find the need to PM someone I'll sign my real name, otherwise no, not a real practical idea.

Most of us aren't hiding. I'll happily PM my real name and where I live to anyone.

However, I live in the real world. I don't need an employer typing my name into google and having it lead to a thread full of tits and Bull Gaytor posts.

I had one SA weirdo threaten to come to my house "when you least expect it". He didn't show up. I was kind of dissapointed. I had my cricket bat all oiled up with fresh linseed oil and stashed by the front door. I was all ready to send that guy for a sixer. I don't get stalked. But it is so quiet here on the beach a bit of stalking might be fun. In short, posting under my real name has never presented a problem for me.

There are a lot of good reasons to not use your personal information, and a lot of good reasons to use it.

I am not a sock-puppet, and I haven't viciously attacked anyone on this site while hiding behind the anonymity of my username, and I would think most anonymous users are in the same boat. And like most anonymous users, those who know me in real life, probably know who I am on this site.

What this all comes down to is a handful of a-holes, ruining it for everyone.

Like everything else in life, you are deciding to "punish the many" instead of going after the few.

As has been mentioned before, most sites that require real information, readily available to any user, has generally a pretty low post count. It not only prevents people from posting stupid stuff, but limits which questions users are willing to ask about as people don't want to appear stupid or unknowledgeable, or experiences of personal nature (ie people that are sick, going through divorce, etc.).

Requiring people to use real names would definitely change these forums, but I am not sure it is going to be for the best.

A noble goal, but here's the thing; using my anonymous ID/sock (in use here since 2001 or so) allows me and maybe others to joke around in a way I might on the boat an with friends, but that I wouldn't necessarily want clients/potential clients/opposing counsel etc to see. It's kind of like all those college kids putting party pics on Facebook. The interwebs are forever and reach far and wide and anyone smart enough to keep that in mind restrains themselves accordingly.

Truth is there is gathering of CA'ers here at the shack this weekend. It's the 2nd Annual Spike Memorial Sail in. I will fly my big SAILING ANARCHY banner from the upper deck railing with pride.

My neighbors have donated their mooring balls so the fleet can assemble right at my shack. The shack is booked solid but last year a few slept on the cover to the swimming pool. Water bed.

We will have a great party with very good attendance by a bunch of unsavory SA types who will drink all my wine, find my scotch and terrify my neighbors. We will make much music.

Sounds like a damn good time to me. I am changing linen, cleaning toilets, mowing the lawn and doing some "in training" drinking to get ready.

Kind of funny considering the theme of this thread but when we get together we tend to call each other by our SA names.

Maybe it's ironic that I started posting here just so that I could change my nickname. I initially registered to check out one of the 'what is this a picture of' threads from the front page. The name I was trying to use got autocorrected into 'desldes desk'. I'm half way to being allowed to change it to what I had intended: desldesldesl. I've been @desl just about everywhere on the 'net forever and am working my way back to it here.

One post at a time.

-dan (you can google my last name if you're so inclined).

PS WTF is a desldes desl anyway? Hell if I know.

Are you kidding? Were you here when we made the move to requiring registration? The wailing and gnashing of teeth over how the forums were being destroyed and never recover was just epic. There are STILL people here today that resent that. Some claim that industry pros could no longer post comfortably (I guess changing your name every time you post is easier to hide than using a screen name that nobody knows?). Others I think just didn't like that it made it hard to be a chickenshit grenade chucker.

As far as real names? I don't think I've ever suffered much for it. I've never been contacted outside of SA by anyone that I wouldn't welcome the contact from. I've never received any sort of personal harassment outside of SA, no piles of dogshit mailed to my house, no threats to me or my family.

Here on SA is another story, but much of what I've been getting lately has a been a result of the information being made public that I've been on the Admin team for years here. Many people "knew" before then, but it being in the open now means that some people with axes to grind have been taking a lot of cheap shots at me. But I knew that someday my behind the scenes role would be made public and I would receive harassment for it; it's why we tried to keep it public for so long. The shit I've been taken because I've been an SA admin has nothing to do with me using my real name here.

If you want to create a new forum with real names and registrations, more power to you - it's a lot of work to maintain. Those Chinese spammers are a bitch once they find you and keep your board software patched or else the script kiddies will take you down and high-five their prepubescent friends about it. However, I don't think will ever see that here on SA. It's not the place for it.

My gripe is we allow people to come here, write total shit about people we know and sometimes even love and our forum is set up such that we let our friends be hurt doth no available recourse.

We let anonymous posters okay judge , jury, and executioner.

The one thing that I think would clean up the BS on SA would be a rating system for posts --

Slashdot, uses one and it works pretty well.

They got from 5 to -1 and if a lotta people don't like your crap it gets pushed

down, or you can choose to only see things rated above a certain level.

Usually I set myself to a 3 there and it filters out the flame idiots and the "me too" babblers.

Not to worry right now, lets see if SA survives, if not we can build SA2...

Scott T. really needs to learn when to chill out and go quiet, he posts

a lot of rants and raves on the local newspaper web site as well.

Name and identity?

Yeah, me, Jerry

No shit, that's why I used Underdawg to administer the site for the last decade, not my real name. In the last six months or so there was a very concerted effort by a few disgruntled individuals on this site to make it public. When I was off the net for a while in St. Martin (boat wifi there is nonexistent) a few discussions that outed me sat in the public view for too long, damage done.

So no, I was not an Admin under B.J. Porter, we tried (and succeeded for many years) to protect me from the bullshit I've been getting in the last few months. But my role has dropped off a lot since I moved on a boat and left the states.

That's a dry suit, it was fall and I was going laser sailing.

I had one SA weirdo threaten to come to my house "when you least expect it". He didn't show up. I was kind of dissapointed. I had my cricket bat all oiled up with fresh linseed oil and stashed by the front door. I was all ready to send that guy for a sixer. I don't get stalked. But it is so quiet here on the beach a bit of stalking might be fun. In short, posting under my real name has never presented a problem for me.

Just wait 'til you become famous one day----then the creepy-crawlies & the papparazzi will be camping out in your tree.....

I wonder how you plan to ensure that the information given is truthfull?

Also what is to stop someone you "toss" just reregistering.

I am an admin on another [ non sailing ] forum with 1/2 m registered users, there is no way to police/verify this number.

We toss some one and ban their IP address, they can reregister and spoof the IP, it is not rocket science.

My name is John Schramm, yes there is LESS known about that name than the one I am using for my screen name.

Honestly with the ease of access to info on the internet, posting real names (or worse addresses) is absolutely crazy.

Same problem here on SA, though we've only had a few dedicated trolls that have gone so far as to spoof IPs.

Sorry Gouv. The price of anarchy is, well ..... anarchy!

This forum benefits from the insights and expertise of industry people, sport administrators and just plain sailors who would not share their knowledge and insights if they were required to identify themselves.

In return for the gems from folks like Bob Perry, Richard Gladwell and Steve Clark, you must suffer the idiocies of trolls and sockpuppets.

My response?? Then shut the fuck up you pussy!! I don't give two shits about opinions of yours that are less important to you than some fucking persona you maintain to deceive others out of their money.

Post only that which you are willing to stand behind forever or take your bullshit elsewhere.

Your name???

C'mon man, really? Yeah, "Porter" is such an uncommon name (and BJ?)...Google leads me right to you and your family. And if you wanna be on the admin team of a website (especially this one) you're opening yourself up to abuse from users whether deserved or not. Your choice. Sorry man, your bucket has a few holes in it.

Respect your opinion, but how's it go...Just Sayin'.

btw...always puzzled by your pic...fully geared for offshore in the boatyard and all. Serious or amusement?

Understood; I've seen some of the shitfights you've been in lately, not sure of the backstory and don't care but WTF is up with some people? Hope youse can work out the issues but looks pretty bleak.

Point is that GTS'ing BJ Porter doesn't exactly give anyone the dish on you...unless you're the athlete, the comedian/actor, or any of the hundreds of other "hits". Regardless, unfortunately you got involved with SA, and along with most everyone else on the "inside" your name eventually came out. Goes with the territory, especially considering some of the dickheads here...sooner or later someone's gonna get a boner for ya and attack. Internutters. Good luck with that.

Nice suit.

Gouv, got to disagree: it is about what happens off the forum. I will never be a member of a public forum where I must identify myself on the screen, except for something like LinkedIn. Although if you posted much of what is said on SA on LinkIn your employment propects will go down.

I almost lost a job once due to a customer tracking me down on a forum where I identified myself and he then used unrelated comments to complain about me to my boss. I consider myself a fairly moderate poster and tend not to be a wanker who uses terms like "bored aussie cunt" or personal attacks. However, somehow this guy convinced my boss that my comments showed bad character. Luckily commonsense prevailed.

Being a member of this forum is never going to be so important that I will risk other parts of my life for it.

The issue is not identity but the standard of content creation & moderation and that is set by the owners, editors and moderators. So maybe they need to be more active in kicking/suspending people who use terms like "bored aussie cunt" as a personal attack, creating great FP articles and spend less time posting insulting and inappropriate FP articles and posts. Although as has been pointed out spoofing IPs to get around kicking is pretty damned easy. And before the mods get upset, I know it tends to be a thankless hard job. Been there, done that and burnt the tshirt while it was on an effigy of a certain person.

If I didn't find some of the content and people interesting I wouldn't be here but some things could diffintiely improve. Perhaps you could open Gouv's Forum Etiquette School but I suspect those who really need it will never enrol.

Maybe you'll just write this off with F#$% OFF NEWB! but if the site can't attract newbies then it will wither and die.

Given my propensity for 1) meeting new SA people and 2) drinking rum with them I'm surprised we kept it as quiet for as long as we did. I'm sure that's how it got out in the first place, though some people were trying to guess for ages.

Also my Google profile has both dropped (since I stopped racing and my name & boat stopped showing up in results) and been obfuscated (by the career arc of both a college BBaller AND a comic writer w/ my improbable name). 6-8 years ago you didn't need to add the word "sail" or "sailing" to the search to find me.

Back when I was racing it was easier to find things like my home address and phone number...now I don't even have a phone and I live on a boat.

I am sitting in my office.

There is a guy sitting here that I met on SA. His name is Tim. He will spend the night here along with Lin who I also met on SA. I met Lin on SA.

We have finished a most delicious dinner that I prepared.

Right now Tim is giving a guitar lesson to my neighbors' granddaughter.

I have been teaching her guiitar for about 6 mos.

Tim is a better finger picker than I am so I want him to show her some finger picking techniques.

They are doing it now.

They are playing "Hey, you got to hide your love away".

The power of SA.

I hit him in the the head, in his cabin, as the sock puppet Miss Marple, with something from Teaky's desk.
