      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

I've always bought Mt Gay because of their support for sailing, and because it's pretty damned good stuff.

For drinking straight, I really like Pyrat. It's come down in price quite a bit, but almost impossible to find in units larger than 750 ML.

All sailors drink mount gay might be a bit of a far reach...

Queensland sailors for instance probably only thought Rum was a purely Bundaberg invention.

I would have thought the real question on rum would be sailor Jerry or Captain Morgans?

We have a great fondness for Mt Gay rum. At a Whidbey Island Race Week several decades ago when they were a sponsor we might have run aground short tacking up the north shore of Penn Cove. Unable to free ourselves, we needed to power out of the soft bottom with help from Kelly O'Neil, and proceeded to the leeward mark to watch the action. We opened a bottle of My Gay, threw the cap away, and arrived at the MG corporate mega-yacht with an empty bottle. We showed it to them, and they threw us another bottle. Our mast guy, a US customs agent, caught the bottle, twisted the cap off, took a pull, and said "wait a minute, this doesn't have a tax stamp on it. We drank well for the rest of the day... it must of been from "ship's stores"?

$30 for a handle? You don't know how lucky you have it. We pay that for a 26oz here in Canada, a handle is over $60.

If you are looking for a good alternative that works well with coke, tonic, or just on the rocks and is also cheaper than MT Gay than try Cruzan aged rum or Ron Barcelo anejo. Both can be had for around 23 a handle when Mt Gay is 32-33. Price is also very area dependent. I also enjoy a Brugal Anejo but it is ussually priced in line with Mt Gay.

Also, anyone who thinks Sailor Jerry or Captain Morgan is good is not a rum drinker.

Yup. Polish potato vodka. And as I am both Polish and Irish, it seems to speak to me on a genetic level.....

Once you try it, it makes wheat vodkas like Stoli and Grey Goose taste like kerosene.

Gosling's Black seal for a daily...

Gosling's Old rum for a sipping special occasions.

The best part is it's still pretty inexpensive (still getting it for $22 a handle, or $12 on a good day for the small bottles).

Mt. Gay? God bless their support, but nope. If the boat was dry and it was given as a "gift," OK I'm sure we could mix SOMETHING with it.

Mt Gay Eclipse has not gone up in price where I am, it ranges from $18-$22 a fifth here still.

Liquor prices seem to flucuate a lot, I usually shop around. Last week I bought a single malt scotch for the warden and found prices of $49, $54, $65 & $74 - all for the exact same brand/age.

I also drink Mt Gay almost exclusively due to their support of sailing - that is worth something IMO. While Eclipse it's certainly not the best (at it's price point), it's not the worst either by any stretch. And Mt Gay has lots of different offerings Eclipse, Eclipse Black (still around), Extra Old, Silver & 1703 and Black Barrel just came out. One of our local liquor stores is selling Extra Old at way below market, so I've been buying that - I assume it hasn't moved for them, so they're selling it off a big discount (and I may be the only buyer). We really liked Mt Gay Cane, but it's no longer available.

I give Sailor Jerry as a gift these days a lot.

After all, I can claim they named it after me!

Not saying that its good or anything. (not!) but that way they remember where it came from.

I suspect rum is still $3 a liter in Barbados (has it gone up?) need to just stock up when passing thru.

I was extremely disappointed when I sailed to Anguilla to discover that Pyrat's is no longer made there. I think it's made in Guyana now. Either way, my dreams of a distillery tour were dashed.

Especially since, being in the Caribbean, no one took any of the damned signs down yet 3-4 years after operations moved so you still THINK Pyrat's is "Anguilla's Rum" even though I couldn't actually find a bottle to buy on island.

Mount Gay Extra Old is yummy and tastes like Mount Gay did in the 70s when they had only one flavor, didn't export much, and did so in square bottles. Eclipse isn't bad - I like it in coffee - beats cream and sugar. Hadn't noticed the price increase since it's like gasoline - when close to empty, must get more.

This thread again...... Everybody sounding off (or sounding clueless if they mention Captain Morgan or Sailor Jerry in the context of good rum.)

Some more personal opinions:

Mt. Gay is a fine mixing rum, but only the Very Old is sippable any more.

Plantation, Zacapa, Barbancourt 5 star all top shelf.

Angostura is not to my taste.

Black Seal and Barritts is the only true Dark and Stormy.

Appletons high end is pretty good.

Havana Club is the basis of a true rum and coke, but only with the Mexican* stuff. And it is perfectly acceptable on the rocks.

Never had Karukera...I will seek it out. Thanks.

Add to the list:

Matusalem from Cuba. An almost impossible find in the US but there's a pub a block from my office that has it. Very tasty. Right on the top shelf as well.

Rhum St. James also worth a mention

(*or better Cuban)

The Mt. Gay Black Barrel is a new expression and really very good -- similar to the short-lived "Mt. Gay Black" from 2 years ago. Only a few buck more than the Eclipse, and much better. I like all their top end stuff, not crazy about the white.

Here is something for Mt. Gay fans if you in the SF Bay Area...

Mount Gay K&L Exclusive Black Barrel Single Cask #1098 Barbados Rum 750ml
SKU #1135393

Earlier this year, David and I were invited to experience the new expression from Mount Gay in the most appropriate setting, at the Mount Gay facility in Barbados. We spent the week experiencing the wonderful Bajan culture. This included High Tea in the cane fields, an authentic luncheon at a traditional Bajan Plantation, etc. We spent some time with Master Blender Allen Smith discussing and experimenting with blending the two types of rum produced, light distilled in a column and heavy coming out of a pot still. We then moved to the warehouse. Waiting for us were 24 barrels of rum lined up and ready for tasting. Despite the festive atmosphere it was actually quite nerve wracking, in fact, as we'd drawn the short straws and were obliged to pick last after the other six special invitees. As each competitor selected their barrels, David and I let out sighs of relief. Somehow, the two barrels that we had independently agreed were superior to the all rest remained available. Maybe we are just lucky, but probably we just have great taste! Rich, fresh vanilla aromas were accented by light American oak spice. Brighter, lighter flavors on this one as compared to our other cask (#1140), which shows some darker spice and slightly richer texture. This stuff sing on the rocks and does wonders in a daiquiri, as the clean cane flavors pop right out of their citrus frame. This is truly a stupendous example of the high quality of Barbados' premier rum brand. (David Girard)

Hey it's only $27. I'd better pop in and get a couple.

Judges too ;>)

And yes, I nearly choked when I went to get a handle at the liquor store last weekend. ;>(

Just had to suck it up.

Going to have to stock up during sales and hint heavily as my birthday comes up.

Real issue is the world is finally off of its 30 year kick of beer and grape juice.

It is reverting back to hard liquor.

The big brands are all cranking their prices up because they can due to unplanned demand.

Stock up now folks. It will take years for the supply of aged hooch to catch up.

I don't think that is the case at all. Its more that emerging markets, China, India, etc. have found a liking for booze and beer is not thought of as being high end enough. The emerging markets care more about perception that the flavour.

Most rum is good rum.

More pressing questions emerge though:

What has happened to Mt Gay sponsorship at the low end? In the late 90s all the races around here had red hats, but I haven't seen any on this coast for years now. I think they did sponsor Chester Race Week last time I was there - are they just on the east coast?

Why aren't the orphan Mt Gay 30s cheaper than Mumm 30s yet? And what happened to the Mt Gay 25s - did any ever hit the water?

Mount Gay is a good decent Rum in the Eclipse version. Not a world beater but good for the price. It remains the standard by which a rum and tonic is judged, for me anyway. I buy MG about every 5th time. Barbencourt, Cruzan single barrel, Appleton Estate, El Dorado (when I can find it), Brugal are all good choices as are many more. I enjoy the variety. I don't see the need to be a slave to one brand. I also don't see the need to spend more than $30 (but really more like $25) for a 750.

Drink what you enjoy, explore a little when you can. It's supposed to be fun FFS, not a contest!

No kidding. I live here and we have not seen Single Barrel in the stores for some time. Checked Cost-U-More, Plaza Extra, Pueblo, K-Mart, various petrol stations and have not seen the Single Barrel for a while. I think it must all be going up to Babylon.

Try adding a dash of Angostura Bitters to the Black Strap on the rocks, quite good. I also order my Crucian version of a Dark and Stormy at the yacht club, Black Strap and Ginger Beer. Not sure what it means that the bartender remembered me after more than a month.

For regular sipping, the 2 year old in the 1.75 litre for 12.29 (recently went up, fuckers). I remember when Woolworth's was going out of business we could get the 750mL for 1.99.

Sadly they no longer make the Rum Cream, which was great in that Sunday morning coffee.

Belize has some interesting rums. I still have a bottle from the early 1990's (empty) of "Belize Extra Strong Rum" which had a simple label with a sailing ship on it. No indication of the proof or anything. Good stuff but be careful.

My wife brought back a bottle of El Dorado 12 year old rum from Guyana, very, very good sipping rum.

As we've worked our way down the islands I've been sampling many of the local rums. There are a LOT of nice rums down here that I've never seen before. By comparison Mt. Gay is...OK, but expensive (relatively...I've still bought it for < $10/Liter on some islands).

St. Lucia Distiller's Chairman's Reserve is pretty decent. We can get that here in Grenada, but it's 65-70 $EC ($24-$25) per liter, versus around 35 $EC ($12-$13) in St. Lucia. Sadly my friend that was popping up to St. Lucia this week cancelled his trip and gave me back my money.chairmans.jpg

One of the better ones was a rum I picked up in Martinique because was a dark aged Rhum Agricole (made with Cane Syrup instead of molasses, and meeting the French islands strict Origine Controllee laws) and it was less than 9 Euros...I wish I'd bought more, and I wish I remember what it was called.

It seems you can grab a random rum bottle from a local distiller of the shelf almost anywhere in the Caribbean and it will be both pretty cheap and pretty good. I've not settled on a favorite.

My other regret is that we've not done any distillery tours and tastings yet, but a day of rum tasting hasn't been something I've wanted to drag the kids around for. At least not until one of them can drive us home... There are several good distilleries here in Grenada though, so we will be making our way to some of them.

EDITED TO ADD:

I also tried the St. Lucia Distilleries Bounty (gold rum) and Crystal white rum. Also both very good.

Matusalem from Cuba. An almost impossible find in the US but there's a pub a block from my office that has it. Very tasty. Right on the top shelf as well.

Rhum St. James also worth a mention

(*or better Cuban)

unfortunately Matusalem is now brewed in the DR... but still good stuff...

Pretty sure that Matusalem has been in the DR ever since La Revolucion. Havana Club is an authentic Cuban rum and is excellent, especially at the price, but cannot be legally imported into the Land of the Free. There is some grey market channels though.

Mount Gay K&L Exclusive Black Barrel Single Cask #1098 Barbados Rum 750ml

SKU #1135393

Hey it's only $27. I'd better pop in and get a couple.

OK lads, I scored a bottle from each of the two casks of Black Barrel that the K&L guys bought and private labeled. I also have a bottle of Mount Gay Old at home.

Tasting party on my under-used yacht while watching the America's Cup Match this weekend?

my recent purchase of MG came with a nip of the black cask. well, ok I said.

One of my boats does a shot of MtGay extra old every time we win. So that is always good.

Regular Mt Gay is good for a regular mixer

Goslings for a spicy rum and dark and stormies or if making Rum balls

Pussers or Pyrate for sipping over ice

I give any red hats earned to my Dad.

Also think it best to try to 'test' as many different types/brands of rum as you can before you die.

Cruzan amber/dark is my daily pour though.

Sail safe!
