      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Current options for Cat 4 Sport Boat

Looking for available options for a Cat 4 - Sport Boat (keel not beach launched):

- Cat 4 minimum

- can be sailed competitively with crew weight 450 kg

- LOA 10m or less

- IRC 1.09 / PHRF 51 or faster

- prefer new rather than used

- stripped out interior

- sprit pole

- would like to test sail in US or EU

 

Thinking maybe Soto 30, Hick 30/31, HPE30, FT10?, Farr 30?, . . . IDK there must be some AUS Super 30 or European 30 footer that is all but ignored in the US

The mummfar and FT's are not <51 PHRF speed - and the GP26 is SIGNIFICANTLY slower. You would be looking at something like a Shaw 9M canter as the best bet

I wonder if a Melges 32 could have the necessary interior fitout for Cat 4at about the same effort as trying to add a sprit to a Mumm 30. Certainly would be the faster boat. We have one of the two Melges prototype boats here and we keep talking about "Coning" it.

How much would our options open up if we shot for Cat 5 instead of Cat 4?

 

The certainly GP26 looks like fun, except it was dumped in the wrong class at BIRW

 

The Synergy 1000 takes 8 people to sail in a blow? (counting heads in one photo)

Talk to shaw, or maybe elliot or another kiwi if you want a small, fast near shore boat, particularly a new one. They have designs that would meet your specs, or that could be tweaked to what you want.

They would both be quicker than everything you have listed.

 

Throwing a sprit and bigger chute on a farr30 might work if done with a good designer's input, but a local boat tried that for a few years and was often beaten by class boats over the line, even in predominantly downwind races. He ended up going back to mainly class configuration, with a little IRC type dick and a few other small irc optimizations.

Cat 5 opens up your options a huge amount, most new "sports boats" wont get Cat 4 but it all depends on the races you want to do and how much you want to spend

A number of the options listed above mummfarr, M32, Hendo, Synergy, etc are going to suffer with only 450kg crew

I would put the FT10 in that same group of Farr 30, Hendo's, Synergy 1000's as we all race in the Super 30 Div here in the PNW. Follow the WIRW results. Also the FT10 Mai Tai kills it in the near shore overnighters in our area. Wins Swiftsure and Van Isle 360 in the past few years. Don't look past this boat. We typically race with 6-8 bodies, around 500-650 kgs.

Antrim 27 tool is in LaSelva and either Craig, Cree or Sascha can build it. Boat is doable short handed and the rig tensioner is a dream for this. Same thing can happen for the Ultimate 24, another great little boat, albeit expensive to build. Tool sits right next to the A27.

 

The brokerage I work for has a Synergy 1000 for sale. In good shape too $49.5K with new motor. Awesome boat. I'm very tempted to buy it to sail next years PacCup.

 

I've sailed quite a few different Tigers...personally wouldn't take one across the pond though.

there was an Antrim 27 in off soundings this year. They broke the rudder knuckle on the transom I think - any of the other antrims had that failure? I was a little surprised considering what the A27 was designed for.

Oh, due share why you think the reason is? Define short money also? The Hendo is priced the same as any Melges 30 and Mumm/Farr 30 that was produced at the same time.... The Mumm/Farr 30 has the best resale because an OD class still exists. They only built 20 Hendos not sure how many Melges 30, but probably around the same number.

I know a Hendo owner that has raced in most of the Mac races since he bought the boat. He has even done it with crew as small as 5 people. Yes, runners are a pain at first, but also allow for great flexibility with the headstay tension!

Don't why you suggest an Antrim 27 or even worse an U24.

 

The OP was asking for something faster than a PHFR 50'is and the Antrim 27 is at least 30 sec/mile slower then that and the U24 even further from there.

 

Even the mummfar 30 , Hendo and the like are only close to that kind of performance.......................................but not quite

Thanks - we had a good time. Competition was stiff in the double-handed division, the races were long and more interesting than w/l twice around. more racing should be like that.

What is Greg Nelson's Azzura 310 like, a mate sent pictures of it in three bridge fiasco .Very narrow at wl but solid lump in bulb to sort of balance the big kite !! there was some info on SA henderson 30 or mumm 30? 2010.

Don't know if this is still being made, but you could at least ask. As far as I know it even makes cat 3.

I don't think he intended to take anything across a pond. Over night races like the Swiftsure, Van Isle 360 are quite doable. The boys in Australia take theirs offshore and do quite well.
