      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Sydney to Gold Coast 2013

Recommended Posts

Less than 3 weeks out and no thread yet?

Skiffe?? Jug on IRC?

Looks like a few new(ish)/newly aquired boats towards the bigger end of the fleet.

Will be good to see the new Black Jack in action, windy conditions like 2012 would suit them.

I dunno, it could just be sour titties cause I'm not going... but without Loki, and with only 2x TP52's and one Sydney 38... the entry list looks a bit "meh" to me? Hopefully the entry list fills out a bit in the next week.

Where did the old Black Jack go?

And what was involved in the Turbo'ing of the new one, revised keel? and more?

That's the VO70, right? Well, the turbo VO70...

Yep, they have made some changes, stripping out heavy unnecessary stuff from the round the world, a few system changes and the re-branding of course.

Will be interesting to see improvements over the old boat, the 66 wasn't a slouch, still a canting keel pure race machine. Peter might just hang onto that in case the 70 doesn't work out. He already has Black Jack Too which is a canting keel RP44 for twilight beer can racing...

As for the other boats in this race, the TP52s are gone I guess as they are inshore boats now, and Sydney 38s can enter historic racing soon... not many lead in classes to ocean racing.

Black Jack RP was the first non maxi home in last years Hobart. Two spots ahead of the nearest VO70. I guess a newer Juan K VO70 must be a bit if an improvement over the RP and the older Jones VO70???

Didn't know Wild Oats was doing the race, had heard she was undertaking some mods for the Hobart.? At least we have 2 x 100"s , 1 x 90 and 2 x V70's in the race. Anyone know if Oats is undergoing the mods or already has prior to the Hobart.?

Oats is in the shed now, prod off with work being done on the forward centreboard and near the exits of the twin boards from what i could see a couple days ago.

those cut outs might have been for the dagger boards - the horizontal foils are in addition to those.

they will help keep it upright together with the keel - this means less weight in the bulb and more sail area

she's like a swiss army knife that floats

can't wait to see it in action tho

I trust that the Oats guys have been in full contact with the DSS guys through out this modification

Hate to see a law suite getting in the way of foiling!

rule book - is there a rule book..

like all the other years it's a bit 'he said she said' but we know somethings going on inside the 'shed'

can't wait to see what they come up with once the curtains are drawn - we'll wait and see but foils are the next step for WOXI surely - everything else has been done

Hi Jason, I thought Lahana was a 90 foot boat..? I had Wild Thing and Oats as 100's and Lahana as a 90', with "FEET" being the operative word.

Well, Lahana is listed on the Bakewell White website as being 30 metres / 98 feet... but I figure that when you're dealing in that scale it's a drop in the ocean (bad pun intended). Add a sprit and you're out to 110 foot or so.

And all the for sale listings have her as being the full 100 feet long.

The old Nicorette/Tokolosh/Audi Super Sailing/Super Sled/Ludde Ingvall's bus is actually 90 feet long.

Looks like a shit race - nothing for the start then northerlies for the rest.

So you think I might need to take some extra days off from work early next week? Though I figure they can always log onto the tracker and find me? :P

They arent on the entry list anymore. They must not be ready with the new mods on. Last sunday they wernt looking all that ready when i saw it.

Like sitting in the shed, no keel, no mast, no one working on the boat.

Don't like the forecast - all those northerlies. Bugger :(

Great performance by the Banshee , first 40 footer in standings. Looks like Wild Thing is a little of a slow thing, Midnight Rambler and Chutzpah retired, breakages or pissed off with the lack of wind?

Only 15 miles to go, Wild Thing further out to sea not sure if Lahana is really in the lead according to the tracker but it should be over in an hour or 2.

Yeah, well done, but you were only out there for just over 2 days...

What about all the small boats still hanging in there.

And why has 12% of the fleet quit, because of "time constraints", its a fucken offshore race subject to the vageries of

the weather.

It will be interesting to see how many of the fleet end up quitting due to "time constraints".

That was one long ocean race!

Why is WT so slow. Seems to battle to stay in front of 66 footers and now a 70 in its worst conditions and a 2006 vintage fixed keeler with no tricks. Good that its sailing though.

Maybe a bit harsh, it is a what 03 model boat vs a near new volvo 70 running on substantially different budgets with a amaetuer crew vs a half pro one

I doubt that Lahana's fixed keel would have been much of a penalty in this race, doubt the canters wouldn't have been in full stability mode for much of it

It put nearly 40miles on them in the first night before they ran out of breeze, the other caught up and then they put 20 on them before it happened again so certainly has some legs on them when in the same breeze.

i bet their goal was to be first there and they did that, so good on them.

Mmmm dont think so chief. Updated Southern Rig, C6 carbon rigging, 6.8m keel, new hardware, new sails, last half of the hull brand new etc. Not exactly 03 vintage. This was mostly all done late last year. Canting keels offer less weight for the same RM. Does this not make a boat faster in light air...... What about the last two gladstone race results.....there is a theme running here...... I was just asking the question not trying to bag them as such. I guess when they line up with WO, Rags and Speedboat it will become clearer. Till then it just looks like struggle street to beat the mini maxi's and an out of date conventional 100'er.

Mel, thanks for the Photos and Video

Did a first on this race, took all the sails done for an hour because of TOTAL lack of breeze off Ballina.

At least we arrived in time for the flight home, but not much time for the usual piss up.

Oh well, will have to make up for that at Hammo. (Go the All Blacks :) on the 17th)
