      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Melges Plows through Optimists while on Port

Recommended Posts

Check out this Video from the Optimist pre-worlds. Just after 1min in two Melges decide not to bear away a couple of degreese to avoid the fleet, but just plow though the Optimists coming into their mark on Starboard, while the Melges are on Port......

Total fuckwits. Shouldn't be too hard to work out who they so the appropriate naming & shaming can commence.

Side note though. How lucky are those Opti kids to be sailing in that venue.

Then at 3 min. they jibe. So they didn't need to go through there for any reason. Just stupid. I agree with taking away the keys for life.

WTF. That is among the worst behavior I have ever seen on a race course, at least by competitors that should know far better. Publicly shaming is the least those idiots should endure, being forced to listen to Bull Gator ala Clockwork Orange is a more suitable punishment.

MELGES 32 Audi Sailing Series 2013

Optimist (Pre) World Champs

I don't think any of the safetly fleet considered that a couple of fully tooled up Melges would do anthing so stupid! Especially fully powered up down wind!

Looks like the Melges bizzarly decided to gybe arround the Opti reach mark - rather than gybe 3 or 4 boat lenghts earlier.

Very lucky none of the kids got hurt. Hopefully it won't put them off sailing and racing.

Before getting out the pitchforks and/or torches, how much room was actually there to thread the M32's through there? I'm not trying to justify their behavior, but it may not have been as bad as the Opti dad doing play by play went on about. After all, they DID make it through without squashing any small children.

Forget the kids aspect - would you be happy to change course while sailing on starboard for a port tack boat? Forget racing even - would you sail on port tack through a bunch of starboard tack boats just out sailing just because you are bigger?

We all hate it when operators of various power boats use the "I'm bigger get out of my way" COLREGS

Sunfish Mid-Winters one year, 105 boats on the line in about 5 knots and a Cigarette style boat comes plowing through the middle of the line a couple of minutes after the start, sub-planing which meant he could not see directly ahead for about a 100 yards.

You would expect the M32 guys to have some respect for the kids, especially if it is the Worlds. Buzzing to leeward of the Opti's would be OK, but plowing through the middle?

Boneheads.

People in the video could not sail a Melges either judging by,

1) the lack of knowledge of the rules

2) choosing a stupid place to gybe and

3) the mess they made of the eventual gybe.

There is no question the Melges were way too close. There is a safety concern here. One wrong move and you could have serious injuries. Ban them because they clearly cannot drive a boat. Also, why did know patrol boats see this coming and do something. If it were me, I would have parked my boat right in front of them, making them gybe away or hit me. You would see them cry like little girls when their boat is in pieces.

Being able to handle a fast squirrelly boat is not a license to be a douche.

Too bad the coach in the RIB didn't have a broken shackle on hand. You chuck it up into the sails so it drops to the deck. Then you can watch all the big time crew on the Melges scramble around trying to figure out what broke.

That's not what I was saying at all! I was implying that a zoomed in camera shooting from the side isn't the best at showing how much room was actually there.

I was there! It was one of the scariest things in my life. we came to the spreader mark and bore away for the downwind. I went wide for some clear air and saw 3 or 4 melges coming downwind. Managed to dodge them all but i know some people who didn't. My teammate ripped a melges kite as the melges bore away on to them and broached breaking their burgee while the other one got a scratch on their boat. Luckily this was the last day of the melges regatta so they won't be here for the worlds itself!

Looks like the Melges had to take a bit a evasive action - the sails flogging etc - so probably not a lot of room.

Makes no difference whether they were racing each other. If both boats are racing, RRS applies.

Whether there was a rules violation isn't clear from the video. A breach of good manners, common sense and consideration for children seems pretty clear.

As for getting a M32 off the dock, I reckon I could manage that. Feck's sake it's just a keelboat.

1st reaction, how fortunate to grow up racing big fleets in gourgeous venues.

2nd, full helicopter adult action, which is reasonable until a certain age, i guess.

3rd, i guess the melgi are staying high trying to get into the cliff compression sooner, rather than stay as low as possible, looks from the results that may have been an important part of the quiver.

4th, theeading the needle is fine as long as you do not foul, sounds like multiple fouling, not good, probably good to see some accountibilty, 69 wise.

5th why do so many think it fine to wake others in watching your kids? Not to mention cheering on from inside the field, close to managing.

Dude it's not just that. Remember, the fucking M32 is on PORT tack. I can't make out in the video where he leaves the Opti's rounding mark but i think he leaves it to ... wait for it ... starboard. Those little kids are happily sailing along on starboard minding their own business when this guy blasts in at about 15 knots ready to skewer them with his sprit. This is simply appalling. I'm going to go throw up now.

Another thing, The melges course was on the other side of the lake. The 2 courses were set as far apart as possible for this reason. In the opti fleet the SIs said they were planning to race in the middle to prevent the race being boring and everyone going hard right. But becasue of the melges regata we went off to the cliff. This is fair enough as its a fairly important regatta for the melges. However, The melges are gybing on there extreme layline to their gate. It was almost like they were trying to hit us. I couldnt see why the shouldnt play the left shore next to their corse and get the same outcome, it would have worked better as they could not even get to the right hand cliff.

Forget port/starboard. If it happens as it appears to have happened, this is just utter disregard for human life. Those kids are great sailors, but an Opti cannot avoid a melges32, particularly if it suddenly accelerates and wipes out. This is hubris. This is arrogance. This is entitlement. How is this any different than what happened at Clear Lake, except nobody, by the grace of god, actually got hurt? Apologies, mea culpas, and pledges to never do again are the bare minimum for reclaiming status as a racer. Demonstrating capacity for human being status may take more time.

1) I wouldn't hang a dog on long distance small camera telephoto

2) Any observer could have filed a complaint under RRS69 if justified

3) Some coaches and organisers of youth classes can be unbelievably arrogant and stupid: I recall one leading his charges through the downwind leg of a Cherub and (foiling) Moth championships in serious breeze, leaving us to sail round these effectively stationary objects in the water that weren't even racing.

4) Personally I'd have gybed off early, not gone anywhere near them and b*****r my race strategy.

Jim C which part of them hitting other boats are you trying to defend. The fact that it was a kids fleet of boats they went into just makes it morally worse, the fact that HKG1203's team mate got away with just a broken burgee is lucky for the Melges. What if they had caught the top of her mast and dragged her over?

The guys needed to be named and shamed for being the idiots that they are.

Again if no protest then there was no serious incident.

Thats is what the RRS are for. If there was an incident then the outrage should be directed at the adults who did not make sure there was a filing.

As a melges sailor and sailing fan, i am emberrassed to see this happen. Cut the ego's. give these guys a1 yr ban under fair sailing and sportsmenship ( rule nr1 in sailing). It is not OK to race across an opti field with a yacht double the size and triple speed. The most scary thing is, 90 % of the crew on these boats are calling themselves PRO's... If they are what they mean, than stand up, pull out from racing and give the opti kids a free ride on lake Garda to earn some respect back.

The majority of opti patents are not sailors so expecting the young sailors parents to get their kids to file a protest is dumb as shit. The coaches probably should have had a few choice words for the melges sailors but the video doesn't show that. And convincing a 13 year old to protest a boat full of pros is out of the question. This in incident is something the two class associations need to talk about

This looks more like a nanny parent being outraged over a non incident and trying to get hits for his poor quality video

Why the inverted commas? are you implying that I am lying?

I have already said that I "know" that this was taken by a coach and not a parent.

We have here an eye witness acccount by one of the Opti sailors involved.

And still you continue to want to believe in the 'infalability of the Melges sailors/ nanny parent" narative you have put forward.

Good luck :)

Many years ago as an Optimist Pram sailor,

I filed a protest against an EScow when I was fouled in a similar situation and the EScow was tossed.

Perhaps I was only eight and only racing in my fourth season as a skipper but, like most of the other kids who were that old and experienced, I had a decent comprehension of the racing rules.

In my case I hailed for room as we both approached a permanent mark each fleet was using and the skipper replied, "Room Schmoom" causing me to wait for his boat to pass, fly my flag and hail (use your best little kid squeaky voice here) PROTEST!!!

These Opti kids were at a Worlds. I know for certain each one has at least as good or a much better comprehension of the rules than little me had. Had any one of them felt the mood to protest the big boats, they knew exactly with what rule and exactly why and ...

The fact none of the kids filed s protest suggests none of the kids considered the incident to be significant.

I am going to respect the kids on this one and assume the photographer and those of us who only have the same view as the photographer are upset about something that didn't really happen.

The fleet of kids was surrounded by adults whose presence indicates they cared about the kids and sailboat racing.

Once again; I will respect those adults by assuming they did the right thing as well.

My impression from afar is the guy on the camera was misinterpreting the situation from a poor viewing angle.

Repeating,

The lack of concern expressed by the very aware kids xnd the other very aware adults indicates I should share their lack of concern.

+1
