      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Dash Cams, Ubiquitous in Russia. Good idea here?

21 posts in this topic

In Russia millions of cars have a dash cam. You tube is filled with examples of accidents and other events recorded by these devices. Even the Chelyabinsk meteor was documented by a dozen or more dash cams.

If Zimmerman's truck had one many questions about that night may have been recorded. We would likely know if Trayvon came back and circled Z's truck for instance. We might have seen if Zimmerman was running in pursuit after the request to stop and if he was telling the truth that he only walked across the top of the T.

We might even get a glimpse of who approached who and the first punch, especially if Zimmerman had left his high beams on.

NO, I M NOT taking a position one way or another just thinking about all the ramifications.

Well, what does GZ have to say about TM circling his truck? He is on record about that, isn't he?

Did you miss this line in the opening post?

You will have them for whatever benefit you might enjoy. Just keep your nanny state government out of the equation.

I did.

lets face it smart phones are everywhere. The presumption that your private and public behavior won't be video recorded is almost gone already. Right now in the US the Gov. just mandated car black boxes one all new cars starting next year I think.

Dash cams would have utility in accidents and other cases but do we want to be under such scrutiny. I can imaging Zimmerman is either very glad he did not have one or he is very sad.

Yesterday I was driving along and at an intersection we counted 8 traffic cams (1 each lane) and a ninth pan and tilt cam.

I like the convenience of a Toll transponder, I don't like the fact that every time a toll is collected the time, place and date is known to the state. If I speed on a toll road they know it. Currently they don't ticket via such data but some are pushing to make them mandatory on all cars. They sell a passive RFID sticker for $3.00 so the cost can't be used as an argument against it. Right now in florida the toll freeways are being engineered with full speed overhead readers but since the Tags are not universal they are building ridiculously expensive traditional manned toll booths on the sides. It is said that each of these side paths will take 25 years of toll collecting just to cover their own cost. One such toll diversion would buy everyone in the state a transponder sticker many times over.

BUT! do we want to become even more watched. The tradeoffs make an interesting discussion. No?

Facial recognition coming to a state near you.

Recently-released documents show that the FBI has been working since late 2011 with four states—Michigan, Hawaii, Maryland, and possibly Oregon—to ramp up the Next Generation Identification (NGI) Facial Recognition Program. When the program is fully deployed in 2014, the FBI expects its facial recognition database will contain at least 12 million “searchable frontal photos.” (p. 6)

The documents, which the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) obtained from a recent meeting of the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Advisory Policy Board,1 shed new light on the FBI’s plans for NGI—the Bureau's massive biometrics database that combines fingerprints, iris scans, palm prints, facial recognition and extensive biographical data collected from over 100 million Americans.

The Advisory Board documents show that FBI's database of facial images will provide search results automatically (the system won't need to rely on a human to check the results before forwarding them to the state or local agency) and that the FBI is developing "Universal Face Workstation software" to allow states that don't have their own "Face/Photo search capabilities" to search through the FBI's images

How is this political? I run a front/rear facing camera on my Jeep, but that's just because asshole drivers will lie. It's certainly not for any political reason!

It's in PA because Jack started the thread.

Having said that, I wonder why Jack even comes here. On the Forums Main Page, you'll find this - "If it has to do with politics and you are a sailor, comment here." under the link for PA. Does Jack sail?

Well some states are two party recording states where these might be illegal. If you password protect your dash cam can the state order you to unlock it? can you video a traffic stop?

Think of it as an expansion of the surveillance era.

There, that is a lot more political that the last two posts before mine.

Many many years ago you said you were leaving. Multiple IDs and tens of thousands of posts and you are still here. Not a lie because you never said when you were leaving?

If you going to stay and troll then HTFU.

Two party recording laws don't apply. Do you get consent every time you snap a photograph with people in the background? You should probably have all those strangers sign consent forms as well.

Edit: to clarify, mine does not record sound.

Exactly sound. So the ticketing officer would be recorded.
