      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Dorade or Brilliant?

Recommended Posts

If it were my choice I would take Brilliant. It's a pretty sweet boat to have in terms of comfort, and she performs well too. Dorade, while beautiful, fast and famous is not all that comfortable, and the fact is, if I'm owning a boat like that, I probably want to spend most of my time NOT racing. That said, I have spent quite a lot of time racing an older wooden yacht of the same vintage as Dorade in non classic events, and it was a lot of fun. Still.... I would rather have Brilliant, you can really party on that boat.

I spent a few hours with Olin not too long before his passing. We talked a bit about his "favorite" designs, and Dorade was certainly one of them. Brilliant didn't make it into the conversation as I recall.

I attended a talk at Mystic and Olin was one of the speakers.

I gave my talk. Imagine talking on yacht design with Olin Stephens sitting 18 feet away.

Then some kids did a group talk on BRILLIANT and they gushed over what a "magical ship she is".

Olin got up and said, "When I see BRILLIANT I just see an old boat. I can't believe they never changed that steering arrangement."

He immediately rose even higher in my eyes.

I love Brilliant, but then I have 48 days of experience racing and cruising her, handling every crew position on her. The former skipper I sailed with, George Moffett (RIP, passed away much too soon), was one of the most interesting people I've ever met - which undoubtedly added to the Brilliant experience.

Never sailed on Dorade, but I'd be willing to go for a sail to choose a favorite ;-)

If the steering station is all Olin wanted to change on Brilliant, then it would be Brilliant hands down. He changed a lot on Dorade to come up with Stormy Weather, which would be my pick of the three.
