      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

me too. forwarded to the man, thanks.

I'm wondering the same thing as mad. Does the man get paid to fix this kind of thing?

Doesn't look like he does, still broken

Clean, did you ever get any response at all on this issue?

It's still broken.

Various people have pointed out that you can use Google or other search engines to find stuff on Sailing Anarchy. That's true. You can do site-specific searches. The format is shown on this old post of mine in Political Anarchy. Yes, I used Google to find that. No, it is not as good as having our own forum search engine, for several reasons.

1. Indexing. The Googlebot has to index all the content on this forum, all other forums, Twitter, Facebook, news sites, commercial sites, all sites everywhere. It's a busy bot. It has priorities. We are not high on that list. It takes a while and there are, no doubt, still many pages not indexed by Google. We make new ones every day. A database search tied to the forums only has to keep track of what is said here, a much easier job to do in a timely and thorough manner.

2. Searching by poster. Yes, you can sort of do this using Google, but the database search could eliminate stray mentions of a name because it knows who posted what.

3. Searching by date range. Yes, you can sort of do this using Google too, but again the database search can do it better.

4. Forum and thread-specific searching. Google can not do this.

The people who complain that it never worked well remind me of the old adage that it's a poor craftsman who blames his tools. It used to work fine for me. Get the geeks that be to fix it!

search works perfectly now after being broken for a couple of weeks. .

No, it was broken for over a month and did not work when I tried the search box on a forum page this morning.

Going to the advanced search page and searching from there did work, so it is definitely better, but "working perfectly" would mean the ability to use search boxes on any page where they appear.
