      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Training camps have started, the season is a few short weeks away. Who do you like to take Divisions, Conferences and the Cup and why?.

NESN just started a series called "Behind the B" (think hard knocks for hockey) which is actually a pretty in depth look at the Bruins organization since they lost the cup. I thought he first episode was actually pretty interesting and you really don't need to be a Bruins fan to appreciate what these guys are going through since it seems like more of a look at life in the league than this particular team.

Damn realignment, I no longer know anything about divisions and conferences. Everything we knew about Divisional strength is changed, with two asymmetric divisions per conference. Or is it the other way around?

The division games no longer can be battles, since the majority of any given team's games will now be in-division.

Anyway, Ottawa in the Atlantic, 'Canes in the Metropolitan, St. Louis in the Western and Phoenix in the Pacific.

Just naming those new divisions like that makes me feel somewhat dirty and more than a little perverted. The Metropolitan Division? Seriously, wtf?

If it was truly a behind the scenes look at the Bruins you might get to hear what they think of their goaltender abandoning them....

I'd expect that to be "not much" really.

We all expect a certain level of kook in our goalies. Thomas just got kooky, that's all.

The organization is deep enough to succeed without him, evidently.

when they dropped the Norris and Campbell conference names I stopped caring what they called them.

At least they didn't go with leaders and legends

^ Especially the 2nd part of that statement.

Mike, I have a hard time seeing Phoenix taking the division over Van, LA, Anaheim, and SJ. I'd also disagree about the Metro: Pitt, Washington, NYR, and even Columbus (gasp) will be tough.

i was in regina this week and the Islanders were swinging out west doing preason games. they were getting team meals in the room next to our conference. i was riding the elevator with a bunch of kids in suits and one of them commented on the buffet being set up for our meeting and another commented "if you play in the minors free food is a good thing" :)

Still trying to get used to Detroit being in the East. Makes a lot more road games watchable, but it will be interesting to see how they do with the new division alignments.

^^Bit of an understatement, no? Clarkson will eat 10 games automatically. I think Kessel should get a couple for his late spear of Scott too (I thought his earlier slashes were fine). Pssst! Fella's! It's the PRE-season!

Mark you calendars: November 15 & 16th. A home/home series for these two team!

I'd like to see more:

Lots of people remember Hitler too, doesn't make it good. (we are officially on the internet, a hitler reference was made in the NHL thread)

Roy will not last a season of he keeps that up, he will end up in a hospital. Imagine what he is going to be like in a close game.

I was glad to see him defending his kids. That was a cheap shot by the Ducks and Roy was placing blame where it belonged - on the shoulders of Boudreau.

That assumes that Boudreau was behind it. Yeah, it should have been a penalty but not deserving of Waaa's reaction. If he can't control himself any better than that, other coaches are going to goad him into reacting and ultimately hurting his team. Time and place for everything, as a rookie coach he needs to pick his spots.

Hertl has mad skills. What a steal at #17 in the 2012 draft too. He won't keep up this pace but should hit 50pts if he stays on the top line. IF thats the case, he should be a shoe-in Calder candidate.

I've watched that goal about fifty times now. Even if he didn't shoot it from between his legs it would have been gorgeous goal, but now it will be remembered as the siick gorgeous goal if the league until he outdoes himself again.

He's just a kid, I hope he can keep up his continued efficiency once these goalie coaches get sufficient tape on him.

what? fact is, if you watch biron's head, he's following the puck and not the player, therefore if the kid tries to pull back short side it's at minimum a 70/30 chance for the goalie...between the legs throws him off and makes it a legit scoring chance with the percentages in the shooters favor. not about showboating, it's about converting chances and not about running scores up (wtf is that anyway other than an admit to defeat from the opposition) but about never letting the foot off the gas pedal. you must be a rags fan...

Also, I remember a game two years ago that had Detroit (if memory serves) down by four goals which them made up in just a few minutes for the shootout.

For the record: not a rangers fan. at all.

Why not let hotdogs be hotdogs?

Why not run the score up as high as possible?

Because kids pay attention to this stuff, they absorb it like some freakish sponge and and it affects their entire approach to the game.

Even the little stupid stuff is completely infectious. How long did it take for EVERY SINGLE KID to start taping their stick like Ovechkin? A month?

and also...i'm not sure what was hotdoggy about it. as the TSN panel pointed out, the through your legs shot happens a lot now; as they also pointed out, the rangers gave up a break away...what was the guy supposed to do shoot it into the corner? hand it to a ranger? 8-2 or not the rangers need to keep playing AND the kid didn't celebrate that exuberantly, he is after all a rookie and scoring his first goals in the league, he didn't taunt. so the rangers, give the kid a break, he makes a move that most high skill forwards can make, scores and gives a big smile and an arm pump...if the rangers don't want a ninth goal, they should have played better.

The kid has the support of his captain:

Thornton provided an R-rated answer when asked how he would celebrate if he were to score four goals in a single game like rookie teammate Hertl did Tuesday.

“I’d have my c— out if I scored four goals. I’d have my c— out, stroking it,” Thornton said.

Want to bitch about something that kids watch? How about the incessant whining to the refs after most calls, cue Sidney Crosby who is slightly more visible then the SJ rookie. Or, how about the strong showing of sportsmanship every time a player breaks their stick on the net, boards or ice in anger? Or, how about the need for retribution after EVERY clean hit? Or, how about coaches acting like jackasses behind the bench, cue HOF member Patrick Roy.

with all due respect, i think you're completely missing the mark with your concerns.

"because kids absorb it"? absorb another kid using skill and smarts to score? darn right they do and every coach from pee wees up is hoping to tap into that absorption and make it a part of his team. it's not like he hung from the rim of the hoop and rubbed his package in the defenders face. it's not like he tackled the wide receiver after a catch and jumped up doing the snuffalupagus dance. he simply used what he had in his bag of moves, did his job, fist bumped his teammates, and went back to work. looks like sound hockey to me. do you remember in the mid 90's when mike legg from mich u. scored that amazing lacrosse style goal from behind the net? some people cried foul, others touted it as the next best thing, and everybody who played the game (especially the youngsters) was practicing that move. has that been detrimental to the game or altered players negatively? nope. it could be argued that it has actually helped younger players by sharpening their stick skills. how many are actually successful at the move? very few, but how many can stick handle better than they could before? just about every one who worked on it. the same can be said for drawing it back and shooting from between the legs

as for this whole running the score up, i'm sorry but this is a competitive sport played by professionals, not ayso soccer. the rangers themselves told the press after the game "WE embarrassed ourselves", not "the sharks ran the score up". not one, but two goalies and four lines of players that night for ny were unable to stop the attack of the other team...a team that has a very long history of sitting flatly on a two goal lead, very often leading to a one goal loss. nhl coaches will never tell their players to let up because it's not only poor fundamentals of hockey but it also is proven to cause injuries...you simply do not play this game at anything but 100%.

the losing mentality is one that complains about the circumstances or the outcome, the winning mentality looks inside itself for the answers of their failure... it's good to see the rangers have a winning mentality

I get that Roy is easy to hate if you're not an Avs fan, but Is this the beginning of a new thing, nailing the St. Patrick every time he gets mad? He didn't realize the glass was that loose and his anger was justified, at least in my homercentricity.

So far his skills as a Juniors coach seem to translate to the NHL. Can't he just be Roy? Is his high emotion on the bench really anywhere close to the threat of Jacques Lemaire's Ambien-inspired era of neutral traps? What's wrong with people getting emotional? At least he likes to see the puck keep moving, what's the problem? He's an exciting coach, if Hitch and Julien aren't a threat to the hockey gods then Roy isn't one either.

My point with the stick taping thing was that even the little insignificant little details which nonetheless get internalized and re-enacted by the kids. The larger more significant elements of conduct moreso.

I agree wholeheartedly with your second paragraph.

( though the stick breaking thing usually only happens ONCE with the kids, who quickly get the "if I ever see you break your stick in anger again you'll be picking $200 carbonfiber splinters out of your ass for a week" lecture)

as for this whole running the score up, i'm sorry but this is a competitive sport played by professionals, not ayso soccer. the rangers themselves told the press after the game "WE embarrassed ourselves", not "the sharks ran the score up". not one, but two goalies and four lines of players that night for ny were unable to stop the attack of the other team...a team that has a very long history of sitting flatly on a two goal lead, very often leading to a one goal loss. nhl coaches will never tell their players to let up because it's not only poor fundamentals of hockey but it also is proven to cause injuries...you simply do not play this game at anything but 100%.

You have a point there.

O

Leafs back on top. That's a winning mentality

For now

Hey, I think the leafs are for real. I think burke is looking good: the kessel trade now is officially a leaf win. Jvr, Kari, Boland, Bernier...they are fun to watch. The oilers on the other hand....

Bernier looks solid!! Kessel just needs to stay consistent. How do they fix Phaneuf??

For the record: not a rangers fan. at all.

Why not let hotdogs be hotdogs?

Why not run the score up as high as possible?

Because kids pay attention to this stuff, they absorb it like some freakish sponge and and it affects their entire approach to the game.

Mike, I have no beef with Roy. He was just the most recent example to illustrate my point. I'm sure he'll be a fine NHL coach. He's already done wonders with Varlamov by insisting he have a goalie coach and then providing Allarie (sp). Now, if he just stay healthy enough to play 65 games.

i think Kessel is pretty consistent. there is no fixing Dion...that's what he is: one game/period/minute he's slapping in a goal/laying someone out/looking like a hero the next he's getting caught on the pinch and looking like a goat.

I only hope Kessel stays consistent. He's a pretty streaky player and the media loves to jump on that. As for Dion......agree he's a star and then the goat.....but why does it look like he's never really trying? Drive me nuts!

Roy is a real hardass with the glass in between them. He proved more then once that a guy 6 inches shorter and 40 pounds lighter can kick his ass. I say take the partitions down and see how he acts.

You're looking at this wrong China.

See, it's like this ... we're now used regular fights, and once in a blue moon we get to see a goalie fight. But Roy and Boudreau are now working together to bring this to the next level, the long sought coaches fight. Once it becomes normal, and we're used to seeing coaches punching each other up in their Christian Dior suits, then after another decade we'll get to see the super-elusive OWNERS fight. Two Brooks Brothers uniformed guys, say, Ilitch and Kroenke, beating each other up in the bank lobby with their body guards standing around keeping the bank guards away.

Anyway, in the video, Boudreau wasn't exactly being picked on by Roy, he was screaming at him too and came up to the other side of the glass, had he hit harder than Roy, the glass would have fell on Roy instead of the other way around.

Roy was mouthing off to Perry a player and Boudreau told him to STFU.

Mike Babcock would kick Roys ass and still have nicer looking hair after the fight.

Still thinking small time, China. The whole coaches' fight is passe, the question is if Pizza Man Ilitch could take on Cowboy Kroenke.

The real action is with the owners, China.

My money might be on Ted Leonsis, after surviving an airplane crash, a bunch of fists would feel just like a pillow fight. But then Charles Wang probably knows some Kung Fu, having grown up in the rough streets of Shanghai. But James Dolan is going to be a favorite in the owner's fight bracket, that dude has a temper that could probably have him take on actual enforcers, let alone other owners.

AV's 4-0, Roy must be doing something right. Caps are going to be interesting though, varly going home and all that. Mckinnon is showing he can play with the big boys. Good stuff. Hawks aren't doing too bad ether. My hocky life is good so far.....

So what's up with the Oilers? Will the coach see the beginning of Movember?

So what's up with the Oilers? Will the coach see the beginning of Movember?

They desperately need a goalie and some D. Dubnyk has been horrible and that's being generous. I was reading an article yesterday about how the equipment changes for goalies has put the zap on his brain. He'd better figure it out, pronto!

Another concern is Yakupov. His lack of output blows (thus b2b healthy scratches) but the bigger issue is crap attitude:

"You can say a million words about getting better but coach says I'm not playing, so I'm not playing. I'm not happy about it. I just want to play every game. I'm going to play my game. I'm not going to change but maybe play better without the puck, or forecheck more, but I love playing with the puck. I really don't like skating all the time, and forechecking, and hitting somebody every shift. I don't think it's my game."

Solid professional reasoning there, Brohammad!

If he doesn't jump on board soon, he's outta there! Nice bargaining chip for a new goalie? Rumors are already swirling about a TOR/EDM deal.

yup. the oilers are a team that MUST HAVE a super goalie. all there guys want to play offence...that means getting caught and that means they need a guy who bails them out more often than not and that's not dubnyk by the look of it. I'm not sure they can or should fire eakins. i think they need to toss Lowe. they were so bad for so long and the draft in those years was so good that a monkey could have drafted great players but Lowe hasn't been able to develop or find the goalie, stay at home d or 3rd line guys that can keep the other team off the score board long enough for the forwards to score.

okay, I'll accept a draw, and pass on the wisdom of leaving the crease if a goalie didn't want to fight ...

But it was also a comment on the relative career achievements of each.

Now, mention Hasek, and you would have a different kind of argument. One can functionally compare Roy and Hasek in a way that is difficult to compare Roy and Osgood, except for a little scrap one time.

Lowe and MacT, IMHO, shit the bed when they didn't land Schneider from the Nucks. Granted the price would have been huge for a divisional rival, but they have SO MANY young players to use as trade bait. Not really sure how they're going to hold onto them all come this summer. According to capgeek, they will have twelve currently rostered players under contract going into next summer. Schultz will get a nice raise but after that....?

Edit: ....or Bernier for that matter!
