      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

2014 Annapolis Bermuda Race Early Bird Entry Deadline Approaches

Register before January 1 and save $100

 

Sixteen competitors have already entered the 19th biennial Annapolis Bermuda Race (A2B). The entry fee is $950. Boats entering before January 1, 2014, save $100 off their registration fee.

 

A2B begins June 6, 2014, in Annapolis and finishes 753 nautical miles later in Bermuda. Entries may be made online at www.annapolisbermudarace.com. Final entry deadline is May 1, 2014. The entry fee is refundable until May 1, 2014.

 

The competition welcomes racing veterans, first-timers and cruisers. Open to any single or multi-hulled sailing yacht of more than 28 feet, Annapolis organizers are anticipating up to 50 entries. There will be PHRF, IRC, cruising, double-handed and one-design classes. Three boats in any one class qualify for a start.

 

Prior to the start of the race, several seminars will cover all aspects of preparing for the race. They are free and open to competitors and non-competitors alike.

 

Annapolis’ Eastport Yacht Club and Bermuda’s St. George’s Dinghy and Sports Club host A2B. Bacon Sails and Marine Supplies, Lee Chesneau’s Marine Weather, MISEA Group, Chesapeake Area Professional Captains Association, Liberté the Schooner, SpinSheet, and West Marine are sponsors.

Pretty sure Class 3 also has the oldest boat in the fleet. The entry list says Summerwind, designed by John Alden, and the only boat with that name designed by him is a 100' schooner built in 1929.

That's correct. We were hoping for a lot more breeze to get out of the bay. We may be stuck there for a while.

Light NNW winds 5-10 kts. near Annapolis, N veering to E to S 5-10 kts. Friday night, backing to N by Saturday, veering to E Saturday afternoon, veering to SE Saturday night to S after midnight in the lower Bay, then the South 10-15 kts. Sunday, with S to SE through Monday night, veering to West on Tuesday. Wow, lots of sail changes await down the Bay. Chance of showers and thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday. Monday night S.E. 10-20 kts. up to 100 n.m. offshore.

 

Anyone racing NS may be seriously regretting that decision...gonna be stuck in the Bay for a long time...

..in addition, the flood current at Cove Point, just north of the Patuxent River entrance, approximately 40 n.m. from Annapolis, starts at 8:05 P.M., with a max flood current at 10:05 P.M. It is one of the worst in the Bay (along with the current around Poole's Island), and runs about .9 knots, so the boats that are late down the middle Bay, arriving there 6 and 1/2 to 8 and 1/2 hours after the start, will be slowed further by the the current...bummer...

Heard that warriors wish is adrift in the atlantic, skipper was washed overboard and picked up..didn't make the start, I notice the tracker does not have them..

So just did some searching around. Apparently he got separated from the boat last weekend during his delivery to Annapolis and USCG picked him up. Seems like there was delivery crew on board, so its not clear about how it happened or why the USCG was needed. Over the past couple of days he has been delivering it up to Annapolis for the start. Uncertain if he ended up having to drop out of the race, or if he is still in the process of getting to the starting line, or maybe his spot is not working.

 

Given the conditions, it looks like he could take his time getting sorted and still be able to catch up.

I always feel like someone getting rescued from the water by a boat they didn't fall off of is very lucky. Glad to hear he made it. I'd like to hear more details when he's ready for that.

 

On another note, it looks like the Mini is being sailed well.

Other than getting his first name wrong, it is an interesting read. Probably a bit disconcerting for all involved. Very glad that Don is ok, and hope he is able to get started soon.

Incredible. What an awesome ending to what could have gone tragically wrong. Nice job to the inexperienced crew member! I hope they keep sailing after going through something like that...

 

Glad to hear Skipper is ok and still wanting to push on. Pretty amazing...

 

What are water temps in that area btw? Can't be much above 65.

The USCG report had him about 6 miles from Cape Lookout South end of the Banks and still very much influenced by the stream which comes in quite close to shore.

 

Lucky for Don in the sense that the water temp would have been in the range of 76 degrees, but it is sort of close to shore in what sounds like some snotty weather. The wave state can get pretty hairy in there, which probably contributed to him going over board.

The Navy 44's continue to impress. I would never have suspected they would be competitive in under 10 knots of wind. I am sure they are very good at finding the best air. The 36.7 Bene Poco has been hanging with them.

Surprised the J-111 has not sailed away from the group in this air. Do they need to plane to be competitive?

Looks like they will have 10-15 and 10-20 most of the trip building today.

I just don't get it. After 300+ miles of racing in light air 2-15 knots 3 PHRF 2 boats are in the lead overall as of 17:20 this afternoon. Boats that owe the front 3 40 seconds per mile are behind them. One Navy 44 which rates 81 is doing 8.2 knots while the J-46 and J-111 are doing 7.3 & 7.6.

Not correct. You have to check the latest report time. Both Chaotic Flux and Bad Cat ( the two leaders), often have position reports that are two to fours old.

Both Navy 44's & Poco 36.7 are ahead of the J-111,and J-46 with recent updates. Positions are 0-3 minutes old

How do you tell DTF? What I'm looking at it looks like the J/120 and J/111 are leading, but there is a north/south spread, so not so easy to tell.

 

If my math is correct the J/111 owes the Navy 44's something like 7 hours.

I used my Navionics distance from current position to finish. Integrity the N-44 is slightly closer overall. J-111 has dropped back and one J-120 (CF) is 2nd.

Yes J-120 CF finished first. Still damn light air. 3 knots +/- boat speed. Very painful race I suspect.

Line Honors

1st in class

1st out of the bay.

 

So we didn't win overall corrected but that's hard to do with 2 navy boats in the fleet. "Position" in distance racing is more important than "DTF" in my opinion. 22-24 sail changes for us and a pedal down attitude turned out well. The sailing was actually quite pleasant when we were moving. This was a big win for the owner who's only had the boat for a couple years, and this was his first offshore effort with some new crew. I had a blast, and we almost made it 6 days w/o getting rained on.

With Warrior's Wish not making it up for the start, I got a ride on Rover at the pre-race party on Thursday night. First time I had sailed with them was on the way out to the start. I was the only one with offshore racing experience on board, and for half the crew this was their first time offshore period. We worked our asses off and sailed the boat to a 2nd place finish in class and 4th overall. Great experience, everyone had a lot of fun on board, and we all surprised ourselves with how well we did. The goal was to not get DFL and to have a good time. We had an amazing time and getting the results we did was a great bonus.

 

Pretty good for a boat with a dodger, bimini, dacron main, and no new sails in the past 4 years....

Why is this one run in conjunction with the Newport bermuda race?? Why not combine the 2?? Why race the annap race besides cost?? I would think that a feeder race would be more appropriate, but what do I know??

The majority from the Chesapeake race Newport to Bermuda. Going to Newport first adds significant cost and time. 18 starters is a pretty light turn out. Newports race is 150? More? Very popular anyway
