      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Macif Going Big

Recommended Posts

Here's a press release from Macif stating they're building Gabart a circa 100ft tri to go out and break some records.

States that there'll be an attempt to break the record set by Banque Pop. Wonder will they go again as Spindrift?

I read it in French, not so sure if there's an English version.

It's VDLP designed, launch date set for 2015 sometime.

I assumed from the press release that they are focused on the solo multihull round the world record attempt but it doesn't actually say as much literally. Still I think a 100' conventional foil assist trimaran would not be competitive with BPV so they are going for the solo record (I think) as a 100' multi has proved to be manageable by the excellent French solo sailors.

I think the change to semi-one design will hurt the Vendee rather than help it.

Makes more sense actually for him to go for the solo as I think Joyon and Coville have taken those tris as fast as they are going to go.

My observation from the provisional specs is that VPLP are pushing the beam out relative to the Iren's designed Sodebo and IDEC it's still not extreme but will provide more righting moment. This boat will have a 20m (65') beam approximately vs about 16.5m (54') on Sodebo and IDEC.

A trimaran of about 100 feet long in the final category, intended for offshore navigation alone.

Length: 30 m
Width: 20 m
Mast height: approx. 35 m

and for comparison Groupama3's specs, this is the Jules Verne trim so the mast fitted for the Route du Rhum was shorter (anyone know how long the "short" mast is ?). The sail area and mast height were reduced for the Route du Rhum when Franck Cammas solo raced the boat to victory.

I hope she makes some mods, no idea how Spindrift 2 will break the extremely impressive records she already set as BP V. 47.16kts top speed, averaging 37.8 kts? That's damn hard to beat without full flying capability IMO, or a significantly more powerful boat.

Gabart is fit, strong, young, and brilliant. He should be able to tame the additional speed and power the Irens tris purposefully lack.
