      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

      Moderation Team Change   06/16/2017

After fifteen years of volunteer moderation at SA, I will no longer be part of the moderation team. The decision to step aside is mine, and has been some time in the works but we did not wish to announce it in advance for a number of reasons. It's been fun, but I need my time back for other purposes now. The Underdawg admin account will not be monitored until further notice, as I will be relinquishing control of it along with my administrative privileges. Zapata will continue on as a moderator, and any concerns or issues can be directed to that account or to the Editor until further notice. Anyone interested in helping moderate the forums should reach out to Scot by sending a PM to the Editor account. Please note that I am not leaving the community, I am merely stepping aside from Admin responsibilities and privileges on the site.

"Rain" is a phenomena in which Actual Water falls from the sky.

Sometimes, it's only a few drops of actual Water,, ( we call that a "little rain" ).

Sometimes,,, well,,

, we call it "Biblical".

Hey, SoCal guys, if it ever does actually Rain down there ,

fergawdsake get Woody offa dat Harley and UNDER COVER !!

Winter Storm Watch in effect from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning... The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Watch...which is in effect from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.

Timing: snow will reach the Tahoe basin Friday afternoon with a period of heavy snow likely Friday night and early Saturday morning.

Snow accumulations: a foot or more above 7000 feet and down to lake level along the western shore. At Truckee...South Lake and the Eastern Shore...6 to 10 inches of snow is possible.

Winds: gusts of 30 mph or more in the lower elevations and gusts of 60 to 80 mph over ridges may produce considerable blowing snow...large drifts and whiteout conditions.

Impacts: hazardous driving conditions due to snow covered roads and low visibility. Temperatures below 20 degrees and gusty winds will lead to below zero wind chill values. Precautionary/preparedness actions... There is a potential for significant snow accumulations that may create hazardous winter driving conditions. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts at weather.Gov/Reno or listen to NOAA Weather Radio. Brong Http://weather.Gov/Reno

Well, looks like we are going to be snowed in until Sunday (5 to 13" here projected).

Seriously good powder skiing Sunday and Monday. This will be one of those epic snowfalls that would have had me hitting the chutes and faces.

It's snowing lightly here on the south tip of Vancouver Island. I'm not impressed. My digital thermo reads 0.3°C, so it's cold out there right now, but it's supposed to rocket up to 1° this afternoon.

was -31 last night, -25C right now. High today -23C

High tomorrow -31C, low tomorrow night -34

I will add, though... I have never felt so cold as when I lived on Vancouver Island and the temp would be hovering around freezing with close to 100% humidity... That's farking bone-chilling.

Just wait another couple of days it was 20 here in San Francisco this morning! I recall co-workers in Colorado figure about 2-3 days before what we have here in CA reaches them. Expected to be even colder tonight and tomorrow with a probably chance of snow here in the Bay Area on Saturday morning. Last time it snowed here in SF was December 09 I recall around the 12th or so it was right before we closed on our house. Neighbor up the street with a steep driveway had just moved in the night before the snow and backed out of the garage and ended up in the neighbors front yard across the street after his unexpected sled ride down his driveway.

It was 20 here just east of the Oakland hills this morning at 7am. Haven't seen it cold like this in the Bay Area more than once or twice. I think early Dec 09 might be close though I think this cold spell has it beat on temps. Curious to see what happens Friday/Saturday when the moisture moves in either it warms up a tad or we get snow.

en it's this cold the snow is easy to shovel.

20 here in the East Bay H haven't seen this sort of temps more than once or twice living here my whole life. Early December 09 we actually got snow in SF and it stuck in some places like Berkeley hills, Walnut Creek etc. That was the week before we closed on our house in the East Bay so didn't actually see it here at the new house but did watch snow flakes falling at our San Francisco condo it didn't stick in SF but it did in the East Bay. Neighbor up the street told me they had just moved in, have a steep driveway backed out of the garage and did the slip n slide down the driveway and ended up in the neighbors front yard across the street.. LOL

Well then, being that local friends thanked me for the warm weather I seem to have brought since I had arrived, now they might blame me for the cold.

It's the seesaw effect. What goes up must come down. Hahaha!

Oh shit. Just checked the forecast. 3-4 inches (prolly 5-6 at my elevation) white stuff tomorrow thru Sat. a.m. and even colder...like 0 degrees. Great. Still haven't got water...2 space heaters on well-head for an hour and 1/2, 4 calls to water guy (who's swamped), tested pressure tank (ok), short-term improvement (almost 40psi) then back to fluctuating pressure guage (between 4-24 psi). Crap. Ice in pipes...moved to an elbow in the 100' rise, 400' uphill run from pump? Fuck, fuck, fuck.

The old Family farm back in Plaino ill -- kept corn stalks to burn over the well pipes when they froze up. I can only think of one crop you have in Oregon that you could burn to de ice the pipes but I don't think its in your budget ;-)

I would book a room at the local hotel if you wait too long you'll be shit out of luck after everyone else moves in and finally decide to pull the plug and find a place with water. Or just go bottled for a while and hope for the best. Good luck!!!

I wrapped all the exposed stuff last night knock on wood no plumber projects on the todo list yet.

Yeah...1st time in 24 years. And, it's been colder, longer here before. Had everything replaced last year except pressure tank. Built custom insulated 3/4" marine ply box for well head, wrapped all pipes, etc at the time also. New pump, 95' of SS pipe to pump, all new wires, new control box, new pressure switch and liquid filled guage, etc. etc. Also replaced solar water heater system with latest & greatest. Only thing not replaced was pressure tank...which tested just fine. So...WTF????

Now they're saying it could be ice at the pressure guage nipple....

A myth. In the almost 1/4 century we've lived here, including owning/operating a grocery/deli for 19 of those years, we've only seen pot once. Someone dropped a small bag in our store. Never seen it "farmed" or growing.

However, we DO have a lot of trees...

So since it's so cold (approaching 50 already!!) here we decided to hunker down. We bought a big pork shoulder, a stack of tomatillos and jalapeños, and let a crock pit of chili verde go all day. It's almost ready. Built a fire, turned on the Christmas lights, popped a nice wine and settled in.

Tomorrow i have the privilege of working outside in a hydro substation. And i cut the tip of a finger off today.

While we're on the subject can anyone recommend a good space heater. I've returned three pieces of crap already including the $300 Dyson ceramic. I need it for a 30' x 30' bedroom with a 20' cathedral ceiling. There is a fan in the middle of the ceiling.

Thanks in advance.

it's not the space your trying to heat that matters

it's where you place the heater

I keep mine in the garage in DAGO and house stays warm B)

when I was 2 years old in New England my Parents used the Car Heater to keep warm

Long pants? Hell is freezing over, it's a sign of the apocalypse!!!!

And you still haven't learned that the heaters in old Porsches only work when you don't need them too?.....

What heater? The heat exchanger have been sitting in the garage for years. Just going to have to rough it today.

35 and damp down here. Need to move further south.

Add to that 4" of ice when we woke up. Not supposed to get above freezing for several days.

Sucks!

21 this morning 7am in the East Bay / Bay Area. It's been kinda fun but I'm Ok with it warming up now. If I wanted sub zero temps I'd live where they get good snow at least you get to play in the white stuff. However just my luck it will snow tonight and tomorrow morning here which would be kinda fun with the kids for a few hours - then it can go away and warm up.

Still no water. 26 out, snow everywhere, water experts can't get up my driveway.

FUCK!!!

Whats the estimate on the weather temp coming back up? Down here its looking like no warm up till Sunday. Hey Ancient M - if it turns out you need to head out before the water thing is sorted - shut it down so if it does manage to loosen up you don't find the house flooded or that your well pump ran for a week and turned your yard into a swamp.

It is shut down Bulb...of course. More importantly it's shut down to protect the pump from running continuously. Damn good thing I added an on/off switch many years ago, along with a check valve....ya know, the kind of things that should've been there already (I hate dealing with fucking amateurs in construction all the time....I mean, how hard is it to get it right? I'm just an average homeowner with ZERO construction training or experience. But...I know how to research shit.).

And, nobody is heading anywhere. When the driveway is white...which is very rare...no one goes up or down, not even with a 4 wheel drive and chains. We're talking 30-40 degree slope, hairpin turns, 1/10th of a mile long.

As for the forecast, we've got a heat wave coming Monday: 39/14....that's the next earliest for above freezing temp.

Actually Uggs are the imported footwear of elitist angry old white men. Highly discriminatory. So I prefer Emus or Bearpaws.

Besides I prefer my footwear made in China.

YAY!!!! We have water!

My water professional owner showed up, climbed the snow covered driveway hiil on foot, and found a frozen/broken galvanized elbow in the only hose bib line I didn't check (color me embarassed as hell). Since it was hidden from view (downhill behind RR ties retaining wall) and all new parts from a little over a year ago, it never occurred ro me. Damn. Live & learn.

Off to take a much needed dump....

Nice! So broken hose bib was leaking causing water pressure loss at the house? So all the systems were OK except the water was finding a way out before it got to the house?

The night before starting this thread we flew home from San Diego, arrived Denver late and had to drive home.

We were in my old Suby that I had to "rewire" the heater motor. About Conifer the fuse blew, it was 17 below zero. We drove all the way home with no heater, she was not amused.

Precisely. Because of my dumbass overlook, I chased ghosts for 2 days. My wife insists that it was nearly impossible to see and that I did check all that was in sight, I still was an idiot for not checking every inch. I'm normally very thorough, especially when confronted with a problem. Maybe old age...?

You're right Len. It doesn't seem like much 'til it's gone. 10 days! Holy shit...my wife would find a way to sell me into slavery....

I grew up in the Northeast. The college sailing season started in March, and I loved popping on the drysuit to get out there. Knew my crew was hardcore when she said she didn't mind capsizing because the water was warmer. Fond memories of saltwater freezing on the weather side of my lifejacket, and thawing out my hands painfully after practice.

Now I live in Texas. Here, they're happy to race when it's frickin' 105 with 2 knots of wind, but when it's 38 with drizzle and 15 knots, they call it off. wtf... I LOVE 38 with drizzle and 15 knots. I show up in shorts on those days.

I guess I should move to North Dakota and buy an ice boat.

39F tonight and generally sucky. Tomorrow low 40's all day and continued sucki-ness. I don't even want to go downstairs and sit under the house with the patio heater on watching the boat swing in the lift. Only 14 days left until the winter solstice and the days start getting longer...

I hate these cold fronts. Good think I bought a case of rum the other day.

I just flew home from Northern Alberta last night, spent a week in Lac La Biche, -41c when I started the car , and it started..... with the wind chill there today they say you have 10 mins before frostbite. And some locals are walking around in hoodies and runners. They look cold.

Which part of the province are u in goatroper?

Red Deer area...

this morning its sunny, clear, no wind -35C -- when there's no wind, its actually not bad out... even when it's this cold, the sun can do a surprisingly good job of warming things if the wind isn't immediately removing that heat...

Hah... first vehicle I had that had EFI was an 87 Ford pickup -- that thing would start second crank no matter how cold - wouldn't sound very healthy at first, though. Never did plug that thing in, but I probably should have.

What the heck are you doing in LLB? must be work as I can't think of any other reason to go there this time of year...

My son is the new staff reporter for the LLB post newspaper (first real job out of college) and if you want to be a journalist you start at the north west and work your way back to civilization, I went to help him relocate. Daughter is in Ft Mac so I'm getting familiar with the terrain.

This -35c shit was hard to get used to for an Ontario guy.

Come summer LLB looks the ticket for some good small boat sailing, its a huge piece of water.

I agree -- in the summertime, being out on the water (way out) is a fairly effective way of avoiding the mosquitoes...

+5 f. 11am. Not that unusual. Colder coming.

But the trusty garage heater is tripping the circuit box. Overnight. Kind of like dragging at anchor, no?

So which glues don't work after they freeze? I hear GG doesn't.

What happens to composite golf clubs when they freeze?

Testing time......
