      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Fantastic! Thank you. Blowing as usual. Also, couldn't keep my eyes off the back drop - the most beautiful city in the world! I love a sun burnt country.

Here is some video from todays SOLAS Big Boat Challenge.

http://vimeo.com/81490531

The quality is not that great as I had neither the camera nor the talent, but after a bit of antishake software it at least no longer induces fits. It was great to see WOXI get spanked on the first legs by Blackjack, Loyal and Giocomo! I didn't get any video of Loyal blowing up her kite, but if she blew up less sails then perhaps she could afford a better chase boat: http://wiltel.smugmug.com/2013/SOLAS-Big-Boat-Challenge/i-DJjXgqj/A :)

cheers

Great stuff!

That looks like a broadcast/production quality vidcam on the back of Loyal. Is that just for their program? or is this being shot for broadcast/public consumption?

More info regarding the R1 blowing out:

Nothing changed as they tacked up to Fort Denison. In the strong breeze and flat water they looked very even in boat speed, with Perpetual LOYAL looking just so fast, and oh so powerful. Maybe a bit too powerful. As she surged past the stone fortress a big gust swept across Perpetual LOYAL and blew out her huge R1 headsail.

“We carried the R1 in stronger conditions than we should,” a rueful Bell remarked post-race.

”In a longer race we would have changed our headsail sooner. But this is a fun day, we were going very fast….we popped it.”

While Perpetual LOYAL struggled, Wild Oats XI slipped past, and with a big reef in her mainsail to counter the gusts she just took off. Maintaining her full mainsail a still over-powered Perpetual LOYAL struggled and Wild Oats XI pulled further and further away.

only if you assume from overseas (like others) that Loyal was not on her ear in the gusts, and WO is tender

neither was true on the day, thers bugger all in it really, in fact with a metre odd more mast Loyal was heeling easily as much if not more at times

upwind was evens, L sailed had better tactics, positioned to the south after winning the initial tacking dual whilst they threaded their way thru the Vo70s, WO had bad air off the 3 'ahead' boats before being lee-bowed beautifully by Loyal(slingsby), this gave Loyal the left and the ascendancy.

Look at one of the video just after the mark when the 2 100s were still trying to shake Giacomo, WO is totally unseen shadowed by L then the rig/forestay appears moving AHEAD of Ls.

why do people think that an R/P 100 canter is a tender boat ( relatively) pure bullshit

when massive canters appeared on the scene they were considered the most powerful ever, hint .............

they still fucking ARE

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

oh yeah the report is flawed and uses license and sensationalism forgetting the facts, the blow out happened out of sight of the 'stone fortress', in fact at the opposite end of the course

On some of the shots of Wild Oats it looks like the main is inverted, even in that breeze. Is it optics or very high batten tension?

"that breeze" is anything up tp a 42knt gust, or 31 at the city end of the course

ok to sheet out a little main m8?

fly down to sydney two months ago and work your contacts.

So a narrow canoe hull is less stable than a wide flat hull?

Only in the mind of someone who ain't sailing

For a "pro photographer" you show a hell of a lot of images with off-level horizons. It ain't art mate, its just fucking lazy.

Go get'me FB, I detest that junk when our SA eds get it on for twisting the pic, I agree, get'over the ability to tweak what don't need tweaking.

Because physics.

a 3yo non sailor can work this out moving between a floating dock to a canoe say

your statement with the ? and dreaming comment appears to be conveying the opposite, i.e. wide is less stable

confirm
