      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Just to get the ball rolling, and i know it is a bit early - but Easter isn't far off, and it never seems too long after that that Christmas decorations start going up in shops!

 

There was a story in yesterday's local paper (page 3, must've been a slow news day http://www.themercury.com.au/sport/wild-thing-at-home-in-hobart-waters/story-fnj4f7j4-1226841480297 ) detailing why Wild Thing is still in Hobart, and noting Grant Wharington's hopes for line honors in this year's (the 70th) race. Wharington also alludes to modifications, saying "I cant say what the work is, but we are going to do something out of left field, it will give us a 15% improvement in performance, which is massive."

 

Let the speculation, the sun fish comments, and the doubting of Wharro begin!

You know, I still have to think that the folks who were the driving forces in the early days of the French multihull scene did not see sitting around whining that they were not allowed to enter the blue ribbon monohull events of the day as le grande fromage of getting multihulls to the forefront of the French public mind, but rather set about establishing their own narrative. The Australian and New Zealand multihull fraternity might be best served by going and doing likewise.

The 50th pulled a lot more than 20-30% more.

 

Not sure that will happen this time. A lot more cost and I don't think the interest is there. What does 70 mean is the likely response I suspect.

The best yacht optimisers in the business probably aim to create a 1-2% improvement so we would have to put this 15% down to Wharro's usual bullshit bravado that vanishes in to thin air as fast as the smoke dissipates when the S-H starters canon fires.

Either that or he has devised a dastardly plan to render all species of Sunfish extinct by December 26 2014.

Yeah Moose is right let them in. After the stack of multi's that showed up to do the RORC 600 it is quite clearly evident that there is huge push for offshore multihull's racing in events like the RORC 600 and the Hobart.

There is also the issue that a first 40 is a little boat in hobart terms these days really not too many oz multis will beat one to hobart. So that will be real embarassing for a whole lot of people .

I am not actually. check out the elapsed times for the gladstone sometime where the multis sail a faster course by a few hours. Even in perfect multi condition most elapsed times are not better than the farr 40 od in a race with no upwind.

Not at all. I am just using the gladstone multi fleet as an exemplar of the australian multi fleet. It is not like we have a fleet of orma 60s in oz. You get one 60 a few dayboats (raiders and the like) and after that a heap of 40 to 50 foot cruisers which are the bulk of the fleet unless we are talking about taking some farrier trailer tri south.

Nuddy wants multis to go, but as far as I remember he isn't that keen on taking any of his boats. Same as most of the loud internet voices, very few are in a position to compete in the race, and even less (possibly none) would be willing to take their own boat.

All I want to know is if Rolex is going to be putting crew hats in the race pack this year!!! Absolutely unacceptable that 2013 S2H had no crew hats, it's the only reason I do the Hobart!!!

Less whining about the inclusion of multis, more noise making about the inclusion of hats for the 2014 S2H.

Sean Langman has given up riding multi hulls south so we can close this topic.

 

He will be back with his own new maxi. By "new" I mean a recycled old hull strengthened and skif lightweight. Plus 100% man power, no stored.

 

The question is can a man-powered maxi still win line honours ?

He hasn't given up. He has wanted a Supermaxi since the grundig days. He's gone close to LH on a tiny budget compared to the others, I hope he can go all the way with the L100. I wouldn't hold your breath for it though. He did promise it would be on the line in 2014 at the docks in 2012.

 

Doubt he would want or need to sell TA.

The first episode is an interview with Richard "Sighty" Hammond, one of the great navigators and seamen in the ocean racing world, conducted in March 2010. Richard unfortunately is no longer with us, passing away in October 2013.

All the Australian multis are training for the Hobart by doing the Sydney to Mooloolaba race tomorrow.

Staying off the harbour tomorrow as it will be just too crowded.

 

A heap of monohulls lining up for the race as well.

Seriously, my respect for Mr Langman is miles deep but as for the rest of the multihull fraternity - well, thanks for confirming all the stereotypes the lead mine community already held about you. Pretty hard to deny you're all talk and no action after this debacle.

As we have always known the bulk of the Oz multi fleet are just full of bullshit as they as sail around in their low tech cruiser shit boxes.

As a die hard multihull tragic since the late 70s, it would be great if one day they are included however as they say we have missed the boat.

 

The majority of multihulls now days are designed to be driven to the regattas. Long gone are the days when the predominant multihull was an offshore boat. The late 80's through to the early 2000's was the time for it to happen as it was then when there was a large fleet of offshore racing multihulls.

 

At the moment there is a small number of offshore multihulls who want to race compared to a lot that want to go cruising.

 

So it would be great to see but until we get a fleet of offshore multihulls that is large enough there is no point in pushing the subject.

dont 'youse' mind GybeSet; the best 4 years of his life was Year one.

This is about an ocean race that would be great to have some multi's participate in but seems to be run by a 19th century mindset that is scared of the general public seeing how slow even the most expensive and highly developed monoslugs are in comparison to (even some caravan-like) multis :)

Dont think I'd want to do it in a Lagoon 500 tho :S

Long range forecast is for pretty much the usual offering: Fine with a chance of Sunfish followed by a howling gale with blinding rain until you reach the Derwent at which point there will be no more weather.

Well Flatbag and GS are not eligible for the Corinthian Prize given to get over 4 thousand posts here you are your own marine industry.

 

Anyway from what I hear the best racing will be at the back of the fleet given the number of old owners refurbishing old little boats for the race.

And I mean little boats so I guess we won't see too many of the glamour pussys from here back there finishing on New Years eve.

At this rate there will be more 30 footers entered than TP 52s.

Currently sailing with the HH42 out of Sandringham. No entry yet but it's on the cards and my hand is firmly up!

 

The boat is a weapon in the ocean and has the capacity to be driven very hard down wind. It should hold it's own with like yachts in the same division and if the weather planets all align... who knows.

Tons of gear, good sails and yes some complex systems and highish maintenance costs. Plus, still had internal ballast last I sailed on it in 2010. I reckon with a bit of tweaking to more recent specs (bigger bulb mainly) it could make an excellent offshore racer sorta like Quest - and at that price its a bit of a steal. True it was written off early in its life as Cristabella when it got blown off its cradle, but it was in fine shape when I sailed it and it's survived a couple of rough offshore races so it's strong. Leaks like a squirter though - deck layout needs a makeover.

300k doesn't sound much but the running costs would be high.....It probably has plenty of gear left.

The boat was at White bay marina last I saw on the hard.

It's messy business that marriage breakup and asset split thing but all too common these days.

Currently sailing with the HH42 out of Sandringham. No entry yet but it's on the cards and my hand is firmly up the owners arse for a ticket to ride!

No TPs left at Sandy so they're all madly downsizing. Could Veloce be making a reappearance after coming so close last year?

The Velocipede being for sale doesn't mean it has to stop sailing. Great boat with lots of potential as a cruiser/racer but won't perform at top level without last years Hobart Hired Help. Older design, too narrow aft so not quick downhill against more recent designs, carrying a few too many kilos of furniture. And that's straight from the horses mouth. It was out there on Sunday in the ORCV Winter Series. Where were you?

Sunfish have spawned the 2015 batch, 2014 adults will now be moved to holding/feeding pens in Jervis Bay and Eden for release in December.

I can vouch for that - We just missed hitting a juvenile a couple of years ago south of the holding pens - Beware - they're waiting for Warro - but if he's not racing - any boat will do !!!
