Yee fuckin Ha, i got 18 litres of epoxy undercoat on the old girl today. God it makes a difference and it feels as though I've actually made some progress.

The new gun that i bought for the undercoat wouldnt shoot the thick paint, so stupid me, instead of just using old faithful, i thinned the paint to suit the new gun.

I wish i was getting paid based on the number of runs, only undercoat so not the end of the world.

Yikes, now I see the runs.

Let me see if I understand how the guide coat powder works: You wipe it on, then sand everything down. Low spots show up as dark spots where the powder didn't get sanded off? How do you identify high spots where the powder got sanded off?

Normally you can stop as soon as the black is gone, however the runs are going to increase the amount of time to sand as the technique is quite different. If its a nice uniform coat you can run over it with a da and a soft-pad, however with the runs you can still use a da on the flatter areas, but without the soft-pad, and a lot more care. the more curved areas will require block sanding, or a longboard. Great.

Yep 4 kids, wife, my own business we are growing with all the dramas that involves. Only 35ft thank god.

 

Re under coated the hull on Sunday, came out much better, however as it was wet I could see it could do with a bit more fairing in places, so again I face the dilemma of doing it perfectly or making some compromises so I can actually sail it one day. No one else could see the imperfections I was talking about even when I told them where to stand and which eye to squint out of, so it's probably not that bad.

Know that feeling, pointing at it with a stick and drawing round it in pencil and still no one sees it but you. Everytime i walk past the starboard side keel on mine i have to avert my gaze from the joint line near the back, god it makes me cringe think i 'll get the angle grinder on it sometime even though it'll be under water i cant let it go.

 

Boats looking great btw, secretly dreading spraying my deck well not so much the deck more the cockpit as its narrow and deep and haven't figured how the hell to spray it and get out at the same time, need one of those suspended sleeping bags like the guys that make those 3DL sails use to hover over the work area, what paint system are you using?

 

Got the same feeling when i basecoated the hull of mine - actually felt like something had happened.

When spraying the cockpit on my last boat (narrow deep trench, i stood on the sole and seats as those got non skid afterwards. I am using BASF paints as i know the importer through a friend. It seems good so far with the undercoat being amazing to sand. Each hull side takes about 1.5 hrs with my planetary sander. Sanding the cockpit now, and like you trying to figure out how to paint it, as i will be using Hydroturf and want a nice paint finish for good adhesion. It seems massive sanding it.

Will probably do that, work from the bottom of the well up and then figure out what can be left to non skid to affect an escape.

 

I've been using jotuns penguard (high build for basecoating) sands a treat, it leaves the nozzle and dries like spray render, had my heart in my mouth the first time such was lumpy-ness of the finish but it knocked back pretty easy with a DA ans sanding boards.

 

Next break from paid work i think i'll jump back on to this and get going with the guide coat.

The guys doing epoxy floors use these:

They are actually lawn aerating shoes, but the tiny tips leave very little mark, at least on concrete...

Hurt my back, 10 pin bowling with the kids of all things, so no progress. I got bored sanding the other day, so fired a gloss on the transom to check the finish, to establish wether i should paint it or get a painter in. I was happy enough with the finish so ill have a go myself, and knock it back and get my mate to do it again if i fuck it up.

Seems in the long run, sanding is 80% of boat work...backs can be brutal...never quite goes away...I try to fend off with exercises for gut muscles, can't tell you how many times I did boat work hobbling around...always seemed to help though...perseverance wins most battles. "Up and at'em! Every man a molecule!"

 

On this latest build (mine) What gets me the most is mistakes I make...and havin' t'fix 'em. No two are the same. Aaaarrrrggghhhh! But seem to be clear now...good feeling and it will come to you...your work is wondrous to me.

Well, if your refurbish is going like my build, constant redos, I suspect it is slow going. "Cannot imagine I did 7 other boats and this one is taking so long," kind of situation?

Disagree with that comment, rebuilding boats is way, way more time consuming that anyone who hasn't done a major rebuild on a limited budget understands. First you have to fix someone elses mess, then you you have to design and build the replacement- sometimes 2 or 3 times over as subsequent ideas and mods change your original ideas. Then the thing you want to do is now costing your wifes new couch and you have to deal with the flak which usually means you have to pay in family time and extra duties on the home front. Now you need a big push which means not just an hour here or there but the whole weekend to get that momentum flowing and the job done. Which of course uses all you brownie points up again, then the weather is shit and so it goes....

Gutterblack has a point. We might tend to beat on us a bit too much...actually more close to truth...if one is on a refurb job, creativity is more or less relevant, as in the knee above and each redo can be time-consuming and breaks are good, so no guilt...but relative.

 

If crafting a rig from scratch, it is often good to take sweet time and alter...as he says, "...design and build the replacement-sometimes 2 or 3 times over as subsequent ideas ..."

 

So fargin true...I can give lists of rush errors and lists of lets think it over a bit...like my making tiller extensions out of graphite driver shafts (cheapo ones or pulls) or switching from a gas motor to electric (inland water), thus simplifying the mount significantly...and so on.

 

The mind and bod need break cuz the tedium can be tough and numbing, so

 

We need not berate ourselves, even though Alcatraz and I feel inclined at times...it happens...

 

I do have one rule: Do at least one boat thing each day...even during winter...(designing). Soon it gets to a "happy place." Which, in my case, is wet and running, even if incomplete...this weekend, I get it registered...and the sucker floats.

 

So, hang in A...in for a penny, in for a pound...makes sense to me!

Just been reading the above handful of posts, glad to know i'm not the only who one who goes through these trials and tribulations, was laughing with family the other day when i said i could tell them what i spent most of my 30's doing - sanding and hoovering in the boat shed.

 

Have kinda ground to halt myself as i need to sit down with a pad and pen and actually design and more importantly agree with myself whats going inside the boat and where such as the electrics, plumbing, pipes and cables, tanks and guages all that stuff, also made my first big purchase in a while - decided to buy a fridge rather than build one, sure i could buy compressor and build a insulated box a la Don Casey.................or just spend 70 quid more than the cost of the compresssor and have a fully functioning fridge with ice box and move on.

 

Decided to stop being quite such a hero - you know, do everything yourself, its getting tedious. Also a big fan of having a fully stocked fridge in the workshop, you see if things are going right, treat yourself and if things are going bad............................treat yourself, works for me although i tend not to use the saws or routers if i'm absolutely skated, tend to go back to sanding stuff when in the 5th dimension.

 

Have a break Traz then come back match fit, you've come this far.

So after harping on about my lack of progress I went out last week and got stuck back in. Sanded on Tuesday night. Sanded more on Wednesday afternoon then blew on some more primer (another 5 or 6 litres), rubbed a guide coat over it on Thursday evening as the paint was to soft to sand. Sanded the whole hull on Friday afternoon with 320. Saturday I spot filled some more pinholes, then dusted off the whole deal and squirted the gloss on. 2 runs and a dry spot, but nothing that can't be cut out. Pics to follow.

Sanding sucks, but it seems about 90 percent of the job...after mistakes fixed...supposed to be fun...so little vacations might be the prescription for happy skipper?

 

I spent 4 hours messing with one stupid mast step correction yesterday, and should have done today...I do not mess up...c'est la vie...must love slog to love boats!

 

Hang in, mate. All done, bomb diggity boat...

I obviously took a great shot cause it is shit enough that I spent the day knocking it back. My mate runs a panel and paint shop so I am borrowing one of his painters to squirt the next coat.

 

Sick to death of sanding it, even to take the gloss off takes about 100 disks and assorted pads and about a day.

 

I was going to paint it white and wrap it in its final colour, however I bit the bullet and ordered the paint in its final hue.

 

Guess what colour it's going to be and you can helm for a couple of races.

Not a fan of red boats, however it was red when launched. Ray Haslers Rikki pulls it off though.

 

If she was glass it'd be Satin black like Varuna, however too much movement in a timber boat would be hideous.

 

Come on Rog, yellow? Give me some credit. Have you ever seen a desirable yellow yacht?

Na, you're right there Traz, i retract that last statement, just thinking - you know '80's boat and all that. Same as any boat painted green really, (like me in speedos)....................total fucking eye trauma!

This weekends sanding has reminded me again how important it is to be properly set up for sanding. I use a Bosch planetary/ da sander and buy disks in boxes of 100. I also use Velcro backed plastic sanding blocks and buy the matching sheets. I use a karcher shop vac connected to the sander 100% of the time so next to no dust.

If you haven't used good sanding equipment you have no idea how easy and fast it can be. Even good da's like rupees and festool are no match for a planetary sander.

Best money I ever spent on this project.

Pretty much the same here Traz got the 6" orbital, and 1/2 sheet, 1/4 sheet pad sanders, plus 2" & 3 " diameter air sanders for getting into nooks and crannies, nearly forgot the mini air fed belt sander, i use the big orbital the most and like you have hooked up to an industrial vac, the air fed ones have no dust take-offs which is a slight ball-ache.

 

Did the forepeak last week with a 24 grit flap disc on the grinder and took off 40 odd years worth of bilge paint in all the lockers in a couple of minutes flat, total mess mind you (cant see your hands in front of your face) but i sheet up the doors and hatches lock myself in looking like this (plus some eye protection) and go for it.

One thing i wont miss on my project is the sanding it seems i've spent the majority of my thirties sanding and hoovering, but as you say its pretty much 90% of the job where paint and finishes are concerned.

I have actually given this quite a lot of thought, and very nearly pulled the pin when i painted it white, till i walked around the marina and realised that they are all fucking white. And 4 blue ones.

i don't really like any other colours on yachts and anyway i like pink things.

 

Gets painted on Wednesday if its not raining, Yay.

Still considering vinyl wrapping mine, seen a couple lairy metallics that would look the conkers on my boat, at the very least i think i'm gonna wrap the mast as the anodisings fucked and its too long to get it re-done locally. BTW your hull colour choice (RAL 4010) is cool, gonna do the decks too?

The colour is actually Telemagenta.

I had a spinnaker that color once. There was no hiding in the fleet when that sail was up. Fun though.

Metallics don't really work on boats as there's not enough curves or different angles to catch the light as a rule. I'm going to use a DTM ( direct to metal) paint for the spars. My paint guy reckons that I can run the sander over them once and fire it on, job jobbed. Black of course.

 

I don't know weather todo the deck and cockpit pink. There's actually not to much that isn't nonskid, cockpit sides and cabin sides mainly, but still got a while to figure that out.

Bright pink kites are great, we had a chicken chute similar colour we called the nipple. Good times were had when the nipple comes out

The plan is for kiwi grip on the side decks and cabin top and hydroturf on the cockpit sole and seats. I hadn't thought about putting it on the side decks where you sit but I will now.

Good call on the paint, vinyl is shit.

 

Once you've got it fair all the hard work is done and the last bit is really only a quick squirt.

Quick but important.

I havent tried the yoghurt but from what I have seen it needs a fairly aggressive pattern to last and its heavy. Since you have the spray gear why not 2 pot and grip particles? It is by miles the best looking, longest lasting and grippiest non skid plus its fast to put on.

I know all this, I had sprayed non skid on Pionnier, but it's really hard on clothes and knees. We also found it wore off high traffic areas after about 2 seasons and it's a pain in the cock to redo, where as kiwi grip is a mask and roll deal.

 

Having said that, there will be hydroturf in the cockpit so it will probably last ok on the rest of the deck. I'm also thinking of putting hydroturf on the anchor locker lid so save the bowmans knees and gear.

Thanks fellas. Looking at an autumn launch so I can get some new sails made over winter, fancy black ones of course, and iron out dramas over the winter series.

 

She will always be Alcatraz Sarc, I just better make sure she's fast or were gonna look fuckin stupid.

Alright bitches, asked far an update in another thread.

Work work has been insane so progress has been slow, but this last couple of weeks I have got stuck back in, sanding and sanding and a bit of masking etc. I will squirt the last primer on the cockpit and spot prime the rest of the deck in the next couple of days so I can prep (read sand) ready for the gloss on the deck next week then hopefully spray the nonskid soon after. I have decided to spray awl grip particles for nonskid, as I can recoat with kiwi grip when it wears out on a few years, but it will look nicer to start with. Cockpit will be hydroturf foam.

I have stripped the winches and sent the drums to have the chrome stripped off, then ceramic coated black. Photos to follow.

I have been planning the deck layout so I can make allowances in the nonskid, and have decided to go to floating jib leads instead of tracks mainly for cost reasons, although having typed that it seems a bit dumb as I am replacing all the blocks and jammers (14) with new so everything matches. OCD much?
