      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Long time Anarchy fan Alex Thomson wants to answer all of your questions, and there's always plenty to ask when we speak to the charismatic British offshore racer. He's agreed to do an exclusive AMA (Ask Me Anything) via the SA Forum, Facebook, and Twitter, so here's your chance to get info on his excellent mast walk, the value of PR Stunts, how to keep a sponsor happy, what it's like being the top Brit in a Frenchman's game, what his plans are for the various IMOCA/Ocean Master events this year, what's the goss on the UK's chance at an America's Cup, and anything else you like. We'll add up all the questions and get AT to hit them one by one in a Skype chat with Mr. Clean that we'll have up and running by the end of the weekend.

Post questions right here in this thread, or send them in to our Twitter page or on Facebook with the hashtag #AlexThomsonAMA. And while you're at it, have a look at the Aussie Sailing Team's piss-take of AT's mast walk posted a few days back. Hilarious stuff, and a good example of why we love Australians.

Has the team bought the ex-VPLP 60' from the last Vendee, and have you sold the Farr used in the last edition as I've heard it has been entered in the next Barcelona under Neutrogena's colours

Alex, In watching the Vendee Globe over the years I have always wondered about the terrible frustration and financial cost of boats that have withdrawn from the race over very small and easy to fix things that have broken. Sponsoring companies must get rather upset to see their millions of dollars go to waste when a simple thing breaks and the boat is forced to pull out.

What is your opinion (and other racers too) about allowing boats to make stops for repairs during the race? Perhaps a 24 hour minimum stop penalty would be applied to dissuade stops for mere convenience. What do you think?

Could you see yourself campaigning anything else other than the IMOCA 60 following the next vendee globe? (VOR, multi 50 etc.)

Also how does the cost of refitting an existing 60 compare to designing and building a new one? (Thinking cost of black and white JK 60 vs banque populaire ex Foncia built at a similar time)

Finally, how much does each suit cost that you end up swimming in?

AT , is it true MacDonald's are going to feature as a major sponsor come your next VG attempt? Will you want to super size your fries?

How do you deal with fatigue:

Namely after say, day 3 when the adrenaline starts to wane and you've settled into your race?

There's got to be a time when you wake from a "sleep" and think to yourself- fuck this, I'm rolling over for a few more min.

Is there ever a moment in a race where you just kinda kick back and think about how amazing it is to be 2000 miles from land and sailing the speeds you do?

Do you wear a suit and tie in the Southern Oceans?

And whilst I think both the keel and mast walks were amazing, can I respectfully request that you could work some smokin hot tits into the next one.

Cheers.

AT,

Where (within the sailing world) do you see the "next generation" of single-handed ocean racers coming from?

And where do you think the boats (in terms of design) will be in 10, 20, etc years time (will everyone be racing multi-hulls)?

Thanks.

Hugo Boss must be pretty happy in the return from investment to keep going and get another boat.

If they've done their analysis of return on investment - are you under pressure to do an Extreme 40 team. That must be the only better return in sailing?

Sailing in suits of course!

What's the worst return? AC (obviously), MOD70, Volvo 65, TP 52, RC44?

So the mastwalk was one of the sexiest things I've seen on a boat. Are you single?

Alex, you fielded a question from me live from your vessel during the last VG . Man, I was impressed, not about the question, but the fact you were fucking living the dream and a prick like me could have some kind of a connection....... So what's the plan to make sure you will have enough back up "power" to meet your media needs, and will you pack some spare hydro units the next time you attempt to break 80 days......

Jack......

How does someone break into the SH sailing world without being independently wealthy?

Where did you start, how did you find funding and how would you advise someone on getting into the sport?

Very interested in the question above.

Add youth to that question, what's to do for a young 20 something yearning to be singlehanding long distances?

you have built one boat and referb'ed 3 (now 4), is this due to financial constraint / ROI or do you feel more comfortable pushing a proven design?

what makes J-P D's VP 60 better than the silver boat?

your referb's haven't always been 100% successful (Black and White) what upgrades are you going to make to the new boat?

AT, you must be stoked to have HB as a sponsor, as surely if it was SCA (like the Volvo boat) you would have to have done The Walks covered in a selection of tampons and fanny pads rather than a fancy suit?

What's it like to be a Brit sponsored by the Krauts and still losing to the French?

(big fan though, love your work!)

Oh, another question if I may. If you were offered the opportunity, would you get involved with a crewed big-boat project (TP52, Volvo, maxi, etc)?

And how often do you see other boats (from your race and others) out in the middle of nowhere? What kind of feeling is that when the 360° horizon is broken by a fellow sailboat?

Sponsorships is a mean competative business. Congratulations on getting Hugo Boss to fund your dreams. How exactly does HB calculate ROI on those sponsorship dollars? Given the fact that most sailors are too fat or too old to wear their clothes, I can imagine they can save a chuck of money by doing a photo shoot with a stuntman to get the alpha male image on their packages. Where is payoff for them?

How was the boat kept stable at such a high angle of heel? The leward rudder must have been about 45deg to the water

I was wondering that as well??? i would half expect the rudder to stall and the boat spin-out like a spinny broach....

...Dear 'Boss',,,,,this question has been troubling me for quite some time,,

I hope you can help,,,I just don't know who else to turn to. I have a slowly terminal disease and don't have more than five or six years left. I haven't told my wife, which brings me to my problem. We had lived together for seven years when she cheated on me the first time. We worked things out, we got back together, but we continued to live separately. Then I cheated on her. We got back together again but continued living apart. After a year of therapy, we got married, but again we kept our households separate. Fast-forward one eviction and three years of living in a studio driving each other crazy, and she cheated on me again—this time in our house. I moved out instantly. A few months and a terminal diagnosis later, I don't have the will to file the divorce paperwork. We've talked a few times about trying to figure out how to fix us, but I don't know if I can ride this messed-up roller coaster anymore. On the other hand, I don't want to waste the rest of my life being a divorced fortysomething, but I still feel idiotic trying to fix our fucked-up relationship. She reads your column every week, so if you publish this, I'll have to talk to her about my illness, so at least that won't be an issue. What should I do about us?:(

I've been patiently waiting for the interview to come online. Come on Clean, if you're going to say something is going to be ready a certain day then it should, or at least there should be a note that it is taking longer than planned...
