Are they still here?

I thought they had left for the second time.

Any ideas on their route to Tahiti? Down south and then north or a long slog to the east?

AIS last showed them heading east on thursday - been outa range ever since

They're calling updates through on the sat phone for their face space page. They're currently to the south of Norfolk Island.

They're pretty much on the rhumbline from Sydney to Tahiti so far.

You could probably make a funky 40 footer out of the old bow and stern sections ...Just add a mast and keel. Project anyone :)

Interesting that they keep modifying the old girl. At what point does a new build become cheaper?

Its called moving with the times. They were clearly shown up by Comanche last year off the start line. Seems they feel a new configuration will put them on more of a level playing field with the new 100 footers (Comanche and Rambler). They're already fast, why not try and get faster? Great move by the Oatleys!

Y'all basically saying a 'Lego' approach will work. Wonder what Messrs R/P think? Or are they involved to homogenise the 'parts' into one workable hull. Basically moving the rig & main keel back two metres on a 30mtr hull seems to be moving towards downwind improvements, i.e the design corner where the main opposition lives. The effect on all round (upwind) capability may be the price.

So another 5t on the forestay and 0.5t in the bulb, any chance of a banana boat given it's chainsawed every 12 months?

Are Com and R88 confirmed for S2H?

WO11 sailed away from Comanche when it got light and sloppy in the S2H by not hobby-horsing and flogging the air out of her sails. Will moving the weight concentration back effect this? I don't think that they can beat Comanche at their own game (POWER), but they might still be better in the light stuff... time will tell.

Maybe a hull on each side to go with all those appendages?

Those crew are certainly dedicated! They are hiking out on the floats too!

Hard to know what else they have in mind, dss foils like the imoca boats perhaps? These guys have powerful design friends and don't do mods lightly but I can't help thinking why not a new boat? Obviously they are looking for improvement via the hull and will build the rest around that. Interesting times, still think Comanche will own one portion of the sailing spectrum.

Nah, If you build a new boat you need to get a new sail number. It's much easier to hack off 70% of the boat and do a rebuild! ;)

Tounge in cheek of course. I'm actually hanging out to see what they come up with.

Anybody else see the similarities?

mark-the-knife.jpg

I don't get it, at a time where we want to attract more people to sailing they go and make it more complicated.

I can't imagine how difficult it must be to sail a boat like this.

Deviating from the "Keep It Simple Stupid" mindset will destroy any sport.

Maybe a hull on each side to go with all those appendages?

I agree, this guy should just buy a Multihull and he'd need less crew too.

Maybe LB has a point about this regatta and its attendees???

Resident boatbuilders, please tell us how they're going to join the new bow into the hull to make it stay in place?

Why have they left those two thin slices of the deck, but cut the bottom stingers straight where they cut the skin?

It would make a good talking point at Hammo or constitution dock or maybe they should auction it off for charity, it would make an amazing piece of memorabilia, own a piece of the most successful ocean racing yacht ever!

They have to cut it up modify it and put it back together. If they don't it becomes obsolete and they will cut it up and not put it back together.

yeah I hear ya mate - it's not real pretty to look at but I'd rather see it racing competitively for another 10 years than see it loaded with backpackers sailing around the whitsundays.

It's not exactly a new thing for race boats to be cut up when they reach the end of their lives.

Why the emotional connection?

Sayonara wasn't past her life. He just didn't want anyone else to sail it! I understand the AC boats would be crazy expensive to run for the next owner, but there's always someone who will make it work, at least for a while. The 130, although huge, should have been kept sailing, damn shame sitting in an artificial pond.

Bob's got Bumblebee IV's mast as the flag pole on Hammo too.

"maxi yachts has been given a permanent mooring at the Hamilton Island Yacht Club. Riggtech, a specialist in yacht and architectural rigging fixtures and fittings, was contracted to refurbish and install the 30m mast from Bumblebee IV, which was built in the late 1970s"

& that's new bow 2.0 the old one was only just fitted a few years back.

Or maybe not, the original bow was fined up and the lower bobstay attachments integrated.

That bow done last year i recall.

Nb: Maxi Ragamuffin (ex Bumblebee IV) is still in the tourist trade in the Whitsundays AFAIK

Which rig? The one they dropped off Sydney soon after launch? I think most of that went over the side.

Then there was the old BB4 3-spreader rig that was in use when Syd bought Ragamuffin & used in Hawaii in 1984. We kinked the section when practicing off Waikiki when a diagonal broke. Very lucky not to lose the rig. Nursed it through the Kenwood Cup and delivery home...

Syd built a new 4-spreader mast when we got back to Sydney... Perhaps the one at Hammo is the damaged 3-spreader one that Rags also used?
