Sydney to Hobart 2016

Ever think the flap might travel the other way?? Lift will be directed depending on flap up or flap down.

from boatdesign:

Interesting difference between CQS and many other DSS boats. Most are designed with a curved foil so the resultant lift from the foil is vertical when the boat is heeled , but CQS has an absolutely straight foil equipped with a flap.

Any heel at all and a component of lift will be to leeward......

IIRC the hull & rig are 2004. The deck was stretched but this is the first stretch of the hull. The 80' hull is still in Sydney isn't it?

The more I think about it, the more I admire the whole deal, get an old obsolete boat, spend some time and money on it as wisely as possibly, then go sailing. It might not ever win another Hobart, but it beats the shit out of it sitting wasting away in Tauranga. Good on them.

The foils seem to have been changed for the boat as launched .. see posts 465 and 476 which show an extra winglet on the end of the foil.

Bit overcooked with the number and size of spreaders, surely. Lot's of windage up there.

Yeah, given the effort with the deck-spreaders (or whatever they are going to be called) you would have imagined a much cleaner rig was a goal. Maybe the mast/rig is an interim measure, and they intend a second upgrade in the future.

Based on a good read of the boat's web site the project was clearly (and cleverly) done on a very limited budget, and hence:

1) The "deck spreaders" were implemented to make it feasible to re-use the rig from the former 90 footer, a boat with significantly less righting moment than this one. Indeed they do reduce mast compression significantly over what it would be otherwise through widening the shroud base. The aerodynamic penalties are the extra spreader and stay length and the wings themselves, the number or spreaders and stays is what it would have been anyway.

2) The extreme reverse bow allowed a 90 foot deck to be used on a 98 foot hull with limited modification. And that deck was previously on the 80 foot Nicorette before moving to the 90 footer...

3) Deck wings aside the back two thirds of the boat is essentially the 90 footer with limited modification - the web site does describe how it was done.

The boat's web site states that about 50kg of carbon has been added to strengthen the old rig. Perhaps with budget injection down the track a new rig may be on the cards.

Why is the hull sitting in Sydney? Same reason Maximus/Rags hull is & same reason the Maximus mould got chopped up last year.

I've got nothing to loose here GS because I have always been completely honest about my abilities & noted numerous times I am an average club hack. In fact I have declared, to you previously, that I have never done a Hobart & that my interest in the race is due to an ex-girlfriend who was employed by the Oatleys whom was very fond of the family & a press junk-it on Alfa 90'. Of course any sailor in Australia has an interest in the race.

So, let me ask this... is the stern out of the water because the boat isn't loaded up or do the expect the bow to lift that much out of the water? That is one ugly boat BTW.

In the "no tip" foil pics you can see the foil end has a socket, and the end is flat. So for some reason they launched the boat without the tips, than installed them with boat in the water. Maybe the paint shop was slow??

Im sure tips are removeable so the foil can be installed...otherwise, how?

Some interesting background info on cqs at bigboatracing.com.

Thanks for that link, nothing mentioned about the old girl starting as an 80'er, so who's wrong there? The history page also seems to skip about a decade of name changes and programs which is interesting.

Enter the Merit then borrow the Pogo Scanas, just swap the numbers. The sails are all white, with all the boat porn at the start do you reckon we could get away with it?

I was down on the boat yesterday, working out how to replace the halyard, aside from that she's ready.

It's soooo tempting....

thr 80' hull is within the 90' hull is within this abortion

this is fact

your comments are as usual from what you read from the NET, which is not from the ocean or nearby clubs, its from your trailer i'm guessing

No, it's not fucking fact.

The deck was cut off the 80' and stretched out and then placed on a new 90 ft hull.

The 80 ft hull (without deck) sat on the hard at Woolwich while the two pieces of the 90 were assembled in the shed. There was a (very wild) rumour that Ludde was going to bastardise the 80 ft hull and turn it into a displacement motor yacht.

Ask anyone who was around Woolwich at that time (and wasn't falling down drunk, Wavey Davey) and they'll tell you that there were two hulls - a 90 footer in the shed, and an 80 footer on a cradle out in the weather. Fuck, I'm almost certain I have pictures from the build mixed in with all the Asian schoolgirl porn on my computer. I'd go looking, but graphically proving you wrong finishes a long second to watching porn....

You've got to hand it to Ludde. He's late to launch, but a 1200 mile delivery from Auckland to Sydney will shake out 99% of the problems you'll find in a(n almost) new boat. Rumour also has it that Chris Dickson has signed on for Hobart, amongst others - so expect the boat to be driven like a rental car.

IIRC There was a webcam chronicling the build. The 90 footer also had Biddlefactor to deal with - may well still, and a rig by Holley, which didn't last long.
