This is a bit of a find I suppose but more of a, What Is It?  Found this on Ebay for $500 starting.  I thought it looked a little like a US1 but then that idea faded.

What is it on Ebay?

Looks like a sidewinder. compare to an advertised sidewinder:

An interesting wooden dinghy in Northwest Montana. The add says the "keel" is missing; I think they mean daggerboard.

If I just had a 7 acre pond, I would be on that one. Would need a batwing sail though.

An MX Ray near Nashville, TN. This one may be a bit expensive (asking $2300) but when you read the description ("can run over 30 mph" and "fastest single handed sail boat ever") maybe that's a good price ! The boat does look to be in good shape.

incredibly Fast Hull with incredibly stupid rigging and sails.

Ah ha, I knew it! The hull shape does look similar but the length at 17' can't be the same (though some ads are often wrong) and that aft deck is all different.  Thanks Satan! Never thought I'd say that...

The Whip has that weird hollow flare in the topsides about 3-4' feet back from the bow. Odd that it doesn't show up in any of the ad images (viewing on my phone, anyway)

I just went back to the auction and either I missed that it was called a Whip or they updated the listing.  Anyways...it's there now.

Salty Buccaneer

Of all ironies I was just down in Salt Lake City today to pick up a few things for Park City Sailing and I passed this Buccaneer headed off to a new home. Talk about small world!

I can't let this one go unmentioned either.  I'd like to horde it for myself but it's a bit far away in Florida.  A 2009 A-Class Cat that started at $99 and is at $520 now with three days left.  Somebody is going to get a deal even if it was hit by lightning and repaired.

The stains on the hull are a tad interesting in the last few pics. The trailer alone is worth high dollar! *edit not included

True...it may need some follow up repairs but it would still be fast.

But apparently you have to have eaten at a local restaurant in order to buy the boats...kinda funny and odd at the same time.

No need to eat or even visit the restaurants in the add, just requested a mention of them in the response to filter out bots/spammers.

I still got “do you still have this item?”

and

”very interested. Please send pictures.”

the boats are not mine. I am stuck with them

because a friend quit sailing under bad circumstances and I am trying to get him what I consider to be fair $$$

i also have a Laser night am selling  for an estate. I took it to KO Sailing to sell so I would not be involved  in deciding a price

Talking about this hollow in topsides, looking at pics it doesnt show up from every angle.

I drew the arrow a bit low but wasn't arsed to do it over.

It is some sort of illusion. The entire hull is convex at any given point.

It really is too bad the folks at Playcraft Charger  preferred bulldozing the molds to letting me buy them

Probably due to the boat having a fairly plumb bow and a lot of flair immediately aft of the stem, convex in the y axis bur concave in the x axis, quite common on more boats than you would realize.

Like the loose luffed main, that must work a treat!

Why did the class collapse, I thought it was well supported a few years ago? Seems it fits perfectly into a gap that is now a void.

The guys who bought the company have deliberately suffocated the class by artfully refusing to build hulls while somehow keeping the build rights. I'd build them in a heartbeat if I could. There isn't the demand that there once was, but that doesn't mean that it hasn't pent up a good deal since they were last built about a decade ago. Quite similar to your sonnet in a way.

Cheers Dave, is there no way of doing a Torch type scenario with a different layup, at the end of the day, if it makes a boat that is 0.1% faster that is almost irrelevant as a brand new boat should always be a bit quicker than a 20 yr old one.

Quote from the ad- "Nice Sail Boat to enjoy with family or friends."

The few FD's I have been on demand quite a bit more skill and experience out of the "family or friends" than most other boats.   It would be more like torture for the average neophyte.

Yeah but once you get the Lightning, you don't need the ferry to get back...... can that save you any money?

FB- Doug

It's an easy sail from Vineyard Haven to Falmouth(after you tow it from Edgartown to VH) but you'd still want the trailer waiting for you back on the mainland.

Finn? No thanks. Fun but punishing.

There's a bunch of new singlehanders out, the one I'm most tempted by is the VX Evo, because the VX boats I've already seen are superb. If there were a class of a y of them nearby I'd be all over it

The Hadron has a bunch of advanced features plus it s beautiful...... a d it s <$3k

Doug, I dig. Never thought Finn was "punishing," and forgive me, Hadron is new for me and appears to resemble a RS boat, though I cannot say which class. Have to give Hadron more attention....

Sidewinder? If so, check out some other quotes / opinions on this thread.

It could be a dreaded, legendary Sidewinder - metal plate rudder (and c-board), low freeboard, aluminum shear clamp - if it weighs about 5 times what it should,  then you've got a 'winder.

More pics...? Could be Sidewinder, but one of a dozen others. I know I have seen the rudder/tiller combo in past...I first thought a Banshee...but not proper rudder set.

Don't get me wrong, the Finn is a great boat in many ways. It's lots of fun to sail but takes some muscle and some contortion to make it go. My experiences in a Finn were decades ago but I remember the aches it left me with. Don't wanna go there again even if Mrs Steam would let me

The Hadron  is kind of an offshoot of the Merlin-Rocket, I think. I'm kinda surprised there's any in the U.S.

Probably not. What's your budget and experience? That Hadron H1 near Seattle looks really nice! As they say, there are many more fish in the sea....
