      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Oh man, didn't see that one coming.

College memories - going off to school in Western PA in the mid-80s and the first crew of guys I became friends with - a bunch of muscle-head white guys from Pittsburgh that lifted down in the weight room of my dorm listened to him constantly, and then there was that blond that just loved "little red Corvette"...

Thanks for the tunes little dude, may you be riding your motorcycle somewhere warm today.

Fuck, Fuck, Fuck....

It's a sad day here in MN...

MN Twins baseball stadium decked out in purple, Paisley Park (his studio) has large crowds gathering, 1st Avenue (where Purple Rain was filmed) also seeing large crowds.

Good friend of mine's brother was Dr Fink - Drummer during the Prince and the Revolution days. I worked for 6 months as the in house computer geek at Paisley Park.

Fuck - I am to busy working on boats to deal with this today. Guess i'm going to have to add a Prince playlist to my Henley & Bowie playlists.

And turn it up to 11!

Fuck Fuck Fuck!!!

Legend has it that Clapton was asked what it was like to be called the best guitar player in the world....he replied, I have no idea, you'll have to ask Prince.

Not sure if its true, but he was top ten anyhow, which if you think about it is pretty much God status.....Genius on so many levels, this is a real bad run for us real music fans eh? Love him or hate him, like all the greats, his style was instantly recognized....

Someone get eyes on Page, Plant, Daltrey, Richards, Jagger......We can't afford another big loss....GodSpeed .

Meh, what was the last decent song he made in the last 20yrs?

Then there's the rampant Jehovah's Witness religious nutbar thang.

And he absolutely detested & fought tooth & nail to keep his music off internet streaming platforms.

The guy went from out there weird, to doucheknuckle. Atleast now that he's dead there might be some Prince & The Revolution albums that make it onto Spotify.

OK, Emancipation was 20 years ago - 1996.

Crystal Ball - 1998

Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic - 1999

Musicology - 2004

"3121" - 2006

These are the Prince albums released in the last 20 years that I like a lot. Each of these have some great songs on them. He has released many other albums, and they might be good -- I haven't listened to them.

shit. That was awesome. Loved his muted telecaster tone like it was played through small class a amp. He was also very sympathetic with the rest of the band...I guess we need to party like its 1999 while driving through purple rain in our little red corvette with a girl in a rasberry beret...danced my ass off in the 80s to his stuff, my wife went to a show of his purple rain tour just before we met. His fight was with the ownership of music rights, and how much money was made by the music industry versus how much went to the artist. I don't think he was on the wrong side of that one.

Not much good to say about the JW thing though.

You didn't hear a lot of him because of his shitfight with the music industry and as a JW, he couldn't speak about his work on TV.

If you went to one of his shows, everything was good. Last I saw Prince was 2004 for the Musicology tour.

In fact, that was the last concert I went to. I need to get back into seeing live music.

Prince, in my opinion, is the best musician of his/my generation. He played over 60 instruments and he played them all well. His guitar work is legendary, but many were not aware because it wasn't the feature of his show. The guy played every single musical note on at least one of his albums, had no other musicians in the studio. I always said, you could invent an instrument, play it for 5 years. Give it to Prince and in a month he would be better at playing it then you. Eric Clapton is alledged to have said when asked about being the best guitarist in the world "don't ask me ask Prince".

On top of that the guy could write songs across a wide spectrum of music styles. Look at the hits other people had performing songs he wrote. Sinead O'connor has one hit, and it was a Prince song, which BTW if you hear Prince's version you will really enjoy it, he wrote it as a duet and it makes more sense that way. Even Mitch Ryder charted in the early 80s with a Prince cover. You can't get much further apart then Vanity 6 and Mitch Ryder and yet Prince wrote songs that they both charted.

I haven't even gotten onto the Time yet. Prince gets bored so he writes, produces and plays the instruments on the first album, using his cousin as the singer. Creates a whole new band that at the time no one knew was him. Then recruits a band to play live, and record subsequent albums.

While the guy was a pain to the record companies and was tough on digital sharing of his music, he stood up for himself and other musicians by insisting he be compensated for his craft, he pioneered the digital album. The way we listen to music today was not in spite of his efforts, its because of them.

And the guy had the balls to do it the way he wanted to. When he was a teenager a record company offered him a decent contract and he turned them down because they wouldn't let him produce his own music. When I was a teenager if someone waved $100 in my direction I would have signed just to be signed.

He was the best.

so true... incredible musician.

Sucks he was in so much pain his final days....no longer played guitar and his last concert was solo piano (hopefully that got video'd and will someday be released). Blew out both hips due to dancing in heels and refused corrective surgery as Jehovah Witnesses won't do transfusions. Something tells me he was constantly jacked on pain meds which led to his final downfall.

No, he wasn't like Clapton. Different styles.

Is Clapton better at swinging the axe than Prince was? No.

Watch the vid I posted. That's some amazing work. There is some great stuff of him playing acoustic as well.

I don't think people appreciate how good Prince was because he was so protective of his work.

Now that he's dead, his music will probably come out and a lot of folks will have a 'holy shit!' moment.

I always thought he was good until I saw him live. That made me change my mind and put him in the Great* column.

*I have seen thousands of live shows ranging from Chicago Symphony Orchestra to Bela Fleck to Dave Brubeck to Jethro Tull to Grateful Dead to Doc Watson to Talking Heads and everything in between. It's what I did from my teens through my 30s.*

Beck is pretty special, and he's still alive. Go see him. Olu Dara is good too. So is Buckwheat Zydeco. There's tons of good music.

Prince was revolutionary and yes, he was on par with Clapton or SRV (saw his last concert at Alpine) or Joe Satriani.

If you want to get into drumming, there was none better than Neil Peart.

The whole "best" on players was probably best dismissed by Hendrix. He was asked if he was the best out there and he said, roughly, "Best guitarist in the world? How about best guitarist in this chair?" and then mentioned some guy, a Spanish classical guy, IIRC, who Jimi said he'd been listening to for his own enjoyment who does stuff he can't do and never will. Bottom line: It's the wrong attitude. Interferes with appreciating the music, and people thinking like that that irked Hendrix a bit.

Prince was a genius and a gifted natural athlete, which is (mostly) the ability to make your body do what you want it to with little, if any, fussing around. Here's the best send up of the guy ever done, best because it was done with respect, and best because it is a true story.

I still need a chuckle? I summon up the image of what it would be like to have Prince dunk on a guy...

Haha. Not a flat head. Still cute in her 40's.

Easy there. She's a good friend.

No offence intended.

(I have a very small store of very old jokes and very rarely get to use them.)

"And after it was over...he made us pancakes."

In an interview Prince confirmed this story with one change, he says they didn't play in their club clothes and as for the pancakes he said "or course I served pancakes it was six in the morning when we were done playing"

Yeah, he's no good

Yeah, really. Holy shit snacks, that sucked. I'd never seen it before so had to watch it six or eight times. So far.

Anyway, nice segue into ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons' opinion:

can you imagine walking into a club and seeing Prince and Billy Gibbons sitting in a booth together. I would probably assume it was two impersonators on their way home from work.

Silent Bob did a Prince documentary. Interesting story if you have the time.

Apparently there are lots of full blown music videos in Prince's vault.

Besides, you can tell she loves me!
