The Shadow

Most Over-rated big name rock bands

You know what I mean. More hype than hip. More noise than sound. More marketing than music.

This ought to be fun.

Chicago

(I really actually never liked Prince's music but realize he is an epic musician)

Phil Collins or anything related to Phil Collins

Eagles

Jefferson Starship, Airplane etc..

Joe Cocker

B-52s (I am from Georgia and still think they sucked)

Green Day (fake punk)

Chili Peppers (fake punk)

Offspring (really bad and fake punk)

Billy Idol

Rolling Stones

nope, Exile on Mainstreet is as good as it gets.

I would like to add Widespread Panic to my list as well. Again, I am from Georgia, have seen them plenty of times, some of them at really cool private parties and I still think they are insanely overrated

Check out his first release before he got "famous" - Greetings from Asbury Park. Unbelievable lyrics..... then it all went downhill as the royalty checks skyrocketed B)

J. Geils - one of the best Live bands around.... they were never able to capture their on-stage magic on disc (vinyl or CD)

Maybe a troll, and maybe not; How many here praising his talent up one side and down t'other were active Prince fans before he unexpectedly passed on?

Phil Collins or anything related to Phil Collins

Too bad. He and what was left of the Genesis band put on a good show.

I have been predominantly listening to punk/ hardcore/ alternative since 1985 but was a Prince fan before that, I would listen to him on occasion during the last 30 years, it was especially hard to avoid him during the Diamond and Pearls period. Truth was I was dancing to his self titled album with my four year old just a day or two before he died. The guy was a genius and whether you appreciate his musical output we should all respect his talent.

Of course we should.

If Facebook is any indication, it seems as if a great multitude are jumping on the "oh yes, I was a fan and will weep for months" bandwagon, most of whom in my life scarcely played his stuff at all, when he was with us.

I'm deeply sorry for the loss of a musician you enjoyed.

Neither Tom Petty or the Eagles belong on this list.

Petty has written and sung on dozens of memorable songs, and his band plays them well. He has a unique sound and style. Hardly overrated.

I know that some people say the Eagles weren't "authentic" and their music was over-produced. If so, so what? They composed and played music that reached a worldwide audience and they did it very well. These are songs that have held up over the years. They played with style and precision. I think that musicianship deserves to be praised, not castigated.

I don't think the Eagles are overrated. Just old, boring and vanilla. Which is exactly how your wife describes you Jeffy.

Prince was a genius, a fucked up crazy one at times, but that guy composed, played and produced his first album when I was 16.

Radiohead, Oasis, Blur... Pretty much everything from that era until now.

Bruce Springsteen haters have obviously never seen him live...

Eagles are very good musicians playing very good songs, hardly overrated,

I think some of you are mistaking "overrated" with "I don't like it"

Gotta say that I think some of you just don't like rock and blues....

And to the fugger who said Mellencamp was over-rated? You probably liked Milli Vanilli. (or however the hell that lyp-synching mess was spelled).

I'd say that most of the bands mentioned here had some good tunes, that people liked. Isn't that the point of music after all, to play something that makes people feel? Anybody who is capable of doing that is due the recognition they get for doing so.

Fark - I even like Buckeye Rooster and The Buicks!
