If an individual intent on violating the privacy of another individual wakes up one day and says "i am going to claim I am a member of the opposite sex just so I can use that restroom" and then stare at the genitalia of the users of that restroom, that is a problem and should be addressed as such.

As to accommodation and why now, probably because some insecure paranoid ass evangelical conservatives saw a trans person in a bathroom and freaked out about it, causing a new wave of discrimination against these people, and they just want to be left alone to do their business.  Or maybe because after the most recent election those who want to discriminate, but have been silenced by societal pressures to not discriminate, suddenly feel empowered to be discriminatory.

What I really want to know is why conservatives have a problem with women using the women's room, even though those women may have been born with male genitalia?

IIRC, and will be happy to be corrected - the original case came about because a trans-kid in NC's parents sued a school board because their son who wanted to be a daughter wasn't permitted into the girl's locker room.   The "efforts to constrain", IIRC, were in response to that incident.   "Live and let live" or "make everyone else around me accommodate how I want reality defined"?     AFAIC, that seems to be the operative question.

You're intentionally misconstruing the issue. girls in the girls locker room are fine - but, a person with a penis isn't a girl, as much as some may want to change that physiological fact.  Some things just are - as much as some may wish it were different.

And that is factual how?  What is the scientific basis for that statement?  Are you an expert in brain formation with respect to gender identity?  Do you deny that the brain is what defines the self?

Your explanation is simple, and people like simple, but in being so simple, it  dismisses a serious aspect of being human, to the point of being dangerous if enough people accept that simplistic view of what it is to be a person.

I actually know several - and every one of 'em (adults) is someone with whom professional interaction is difficult because other aspects of their behavior are distracting and require constant focus to avoid saying or doing anything that might have even the slightest potential to cause offense. 

I don't intend to dismiss an aspect of being human - but, some things simply are:  A kid born without legs isn't going to be able to compete on the cross country team.  Is it the fault of the athletic department that he can't?  Should they require the cross country team to compete in wheelchairs so that the kid born without legs doesn't feel like he's missing out on something?  Should we have to pass a law saying that you have to have legs to be on the cross country team because the parents of that kid sue to get their kid on the cross country team? That kid IS missing out - and nothing that anyone else does is going to change that.

I am sorry, but that is a false equivalence.  A child being born without legs is not the same as child being born without a penis, but with the brain of a man.  Or vice versa.  

I would suggest a 100 level philosophy course to engage in some discussion on the definition of self and what it is.  

I will also offer up those individuals that are born XXY wrt their 23rd chromosome set (usually a pair, but triplet in this case).  Generally they have female facial features, though may look a little more masculine than other females, have breasts, and sometimes are born with a penis.  Almost always their brains tell them they are female.  Yet by your logic, because they were born with a penis they are male?  

Also, why do you feel it so hard to interact with trans people?  Is it because YOU think they should be something other than they actually are?  Could it be that YOU (and not just you personally, but all the members of society who think as you do, that people are SUPPOSED to be something other than what they actually are) are the problem?  

I know several trans people and I have found the best way to treat them is to treat them how they want to be treated.  At first, it was a bit awkward for me, as I had to get over the social construct that the student I was talking to last year as a girl, is now a guy.  But that was MY hang up.  Once I got over that, it was no more difficult to call him Mr. Smith as it was Miss. Smith (name changed because the person is still a minor) and treat him just like I would any other male student.

 

And guy, I am not digging on you or taking shots at you here, but rather maybe foster some personal reflection on your part as to the basis of your belief system, and if possibly accepting other beliefs may make your life better or easier.  That's all.

I was following the controversy over Playboy's first trans playmate, on twitter last night.  A lot of guys saying "that's not a woman, that's a dickless man with fake tits" and such... and other saying how Hefner must be spinning in his grave...  Playboy themselves dropped into the thread, to point out it wasn't the first time they'd had a transwoman in the magazine  -  that was Caroline "Tula" Cossey, in 1991. 

Anyways, long story short  -  I got to reading about Tula.  This passage in her wikipedia page might give you pause:

Physical / biological / genetic "sex" isn't nearly as strictly 'either/or' as we think.  Intersex individuals are about as common as red haired individuals.  But often there's no obvious genetic "defect"  -  and when there is, it's surgically "corrected" soon after birth.

 

It's not just people, either.  Critters, too.  I read a book, some years back  -  Evolution's Rainbow  -  that basically catalogued all the different surprising gender/sex configurations in the natural world.  Cod, for example, are all born female; when a male dies, the biggest most dominant female in the group turns into a male.  Clownfish are all born male, and when a female dies, one of the males turns into a female.  Female Hyenas have clits as big as the males' dicks.  Almost half of all male Marsh Harriers, have the plumage of females & don't breed. 

It was a bit boring, honestly  -  the writer's dedicated, but not that talented  -  but still worth reading.  Just the sheer accumulation of examples, after awhile, changes how you think about "biological sex".

You seem to think that conservative white males are immune from discrimination.  It's there, but, it's different - very few reasonable people would suggest that white males are handicapped by virtue of being a white male when it comes to employment considerations, for example.  When  you hear about a case of racial/sexual/gender discrimination, I'd bet you a dollar to a donut that *your* first thought is that the offender is a white guy.  That's discriminatory, Flash, and plays out in the way you think about and deal with anyone whom you suspect you can pigeonhole into a perspective different than your own.

To be honest, don't all of us feel a little conscious around transgenders? Not  fearful, or hateful..just curious? Until one gets to know them and their presence becomes accepted and normalised. (I'm talking about close contact here, like in the worlplace or social circles.

I knew a couple of lovely trandgender women..one S..used to be a funeral director..had the change 30 years ago..owned a newsagengy with her straight partner..My daughter (aged 4) walked in to the shop with me and cried in those peircing little voices "Mummmm thats a man!!

They took his side (he was the boss), the police (correctly) stated that he said/she said is not enough to get a conviction, it destroyed her and (due to the trauma) her marriage. As it pertains to teachers/students (or more accurately - children and adults in a position of trust) - you are correct. The accusation can be ruinous to a career, even when absolved. Doesn't always happen, my father was accused and the investigation cleared him, but it happens often enough that CYA policies around children is worth it. Pence is not in that situation. I actually quite agree with the puritanism streak as an issue.  I think so many of our society's issues that are different than say Europe is that we are so fucking puritanical about sex and drinking and such.  I'm of the mind that as soon as you tell people they aren't allowed to do something, the first thing they want to do is what they're not allowed to.  In many countries in Europe, its no big deal for a kid to be able to have a glass of wine with dinner along with the "Rents".  By the time they grow up, the thought of binge drinking in HS and college is not even an issue.  Same with sex.... topless beaches in France and Italy.  Kids see neked wimmins at an early age and its no big deal by the time they grow up.  As soon as you make something forbidden and mysterious - they want it even more.
