      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Girl with patreon account goes sailing in hot place

I know that some grumpy old blokes on this forum dislike the genre of sailing films involving lovely people sailing in easy places while waving buskers cups

but as an example of how, for us sailors,   things can suddenly turn against you this is a classic.

I think it is interesting to see these narratives. For me, as a non globe trotting sailor who spends his days drifting around benign muddy creeks it is an eye opener

Gives a pretty good idea of the near total destruction of St. Martin.  We were there for almost 3 weeks in January.  Passed by the docks where their boat was many times.  It is a sheltered area, but I guess in 160 kt winds there really is no shelter. Awful to think of what the inhabitants are going through.  No power, no water, no way to cook or store food even if you can get it. Crazy.

I don't care whether they wear tethers or not, just as long as they don't also own an EPIRB or PLB if they choose not to look after their own safety.

Around CA there is a consensus among many of the veteran posters that La Vagabonde's crew presents a negative picture of the next generation of sailors: self-centred, shallow and eschewing time-honoured seamanship and values. On the other hand, Riley and Elayna have been very successful at the sailing vlog game and have parlayed that success into a new boat and a means of supporting themselves. Dylan Winter says they are among the best of the 'YouTube diarists' and gives their film making high praise. Personally I prefer the true grit of Dylan's videos. I don't think I have ever made it through an entire La Vagabonde episode. But for those of you who enjoy La Vag, maybe you are finding something I am missing or don't fancy. I don't think I am bitter about their success and doubt the others are either. Just critical of their attitude. I'm sure La Vag doesn't care what people on CA think anyway.

I was indifferent to them as they had nothing to offer. Then someone earlier (I think in this thread) drew attention to their stealing from another sailboat…episode 18.

They came across an inverted cat – not abandoned, not a case of salvage the boat was attached to a mooring. They entered it rummaged around and made off with a number of items before they where shooed away by someone they thought was saying “it was his boat”. Rather than apologizing and returning the items they plundered they made off in the dingy.  Not only where they so self centered as to rob from an unfortunate other sailor they where clueless enough as to include it in their video.

That moved me from indifferent to definitely hostile to them.

I think the Catamaran incident showed some naivety, they aren't life long sailors so they probably didn't know the rules. They've done some miles now mostly shorthanded too. Fuck even Rimas has more single handed miles than most of us.

Tom,

I love this film in almost every way.  It has a certain gritty reality that others can only attempt to emulate.

The shape of the piece is excellent in the way it has been impeccably structured with several intermingling and sequentially peaking  plot lines.

your voice over skills are exceptional, the steady cam is working a treat, and the wind gag is one of the best I have ever heard.

The totty is exceptional and the all round sense of adventure has seldom been matched on you tube

You richly deserve your $42.50 fee.

well I think that the film really licked along nicely - I assume you must take some credit for the beautiful editing and post production effort that some-one clearly put into it. As a pro I can tell that an  extremely talented person must have pulled an all nighter to get it to work as well as it does.

Hearty congratulations to all involved.

there is a degree of unseemly excitement about unveiling La Vag plastic busters... particularly among the non paying knocker knockers

It is entirely possible that those who have chipped in have already seen the unveiling through the special films posted for Patrons -  hence the tantalising peek-a-boo game that is currently under way with the non payers who are keen to get a glimpse of the surgeons art as applied to a wench young enough to be their grand-daughter.

I myself  allow my paypal tappers to watch me having a birdy bath in the cockpit using nothing other than a bucket of warm soapy water, a large yellow sponge, a stiff brush and an umbrella. That is what I call added value over here at KTL industries.

I'm no expert. I'm barely competent. And they keep changing it, making me less competent with each iteration.

I don't remember how long it took. That was seven years ago. I can tell you that it took longer to sort through, crop, enhance, and web-optimize all the photos than it took to edit the videos.

Pics:

https://www.suncatnationals.com/some-sun-cat-nationals-pictures

Hmm... and the videos seem to have disappeared from their page:

https://www.suncatnationals.com/sun-cat-nationals-videos

Wordpress is another toy with which I'm barely competent and I'm not going to go back and figure out how to re-embed those videos. They're all on my extremely lucrative Boatflix youtube page.

My favorites get uploaded to Vimeo, where the quality is better (and download times longer).

On the thread topic, I find the whole idea of people paying me for stuff I put on youtube or tropicalboating.com or on suncatnationals.com to be just plain funny. Why would anyone do that? I'm putting stuff up for my own entertainment. This is just funny to me and I'm going to put stuff like this up whether I'm paid or not.

Maybe so. For you. Would be the same for me.

But then, if you pay someone for something you like them to do, then they will do more of it. Maybe also strive to do it better. Others may chime in. That is also OK for those who want it, both sides.

So I would be happy to contribute to Dylans escapades. Even if I haven't done so yet - pure laziness from my side.

Myself I cannot be bothered with the La Vage and all the others. Not my cup of tea, simply.

I have enjoyed Dylan's escapades for years and contributed only a little advice.

I don't want to discourage him or anyone else from doing this kind of thing, asking for tips, paying others, almost showing boobs, or any of it.

I'd just feel weird asking for money for any of mine. "Look! I'm playing! Pay me!" Maybe if I had boobs.

If you just go by number of  video views, I think the most interesting thing I posted on youtube was removing a trailer wheel bearing. And it's a bad video from which one could learn little.

There lies the reality. We have jobs and businesses that we WORK in/at to pay for our sailing. Not at all sure that still holds.

It could be argued that you are begging people to give you money, just for a different offering.  After looking at the reactions these 'vloggers' have to public reaction to what they do, it would clearly be living-hell to rely on the responses from any lunatic on the planet, to their latest offering.  It would be like tying your income to responses on PA.

As it is here now, we can just laugh.  But they don't think the flaming, or lack of viewing they sometimes get to their product is very funni.  Fuck that for a living.

The only sailing videos I've paid for have been Dylans, because to me there is value in them - and that is how the system should work.  If you find value in LaVag, "donate" to them - essentially pay them for the entertainment.  Just as finding a really good street performer is a joy, and worth contributing to the continuation of the performance.

I've made a bit of coin writing how-to articles for a boating magazine, does it cheapen my sailing?  I'm getting paid to take some pictures of something that I'm doing anyway.  Same diff...

True for a lot of them LB but not so for some like the Vagamites and Delos. This online stuff is a serious business and in Vags case if they fail they are still on the hook for a million dollar boat.

Vag's following as leader of this genre is a fraction of the money been made by some mainstream online "influencers" currently out there. I suspect they know that and will be tweaking their format to close the gap. We have already seen them up the production quality. Don't be surprised if they start wearing and saying weird shit (yeah I know) as they start subtly promoting various products, some which have absolutely nothing to do with sailing. Brow probably has a jewellery line in the pipeline ready for Xmas.

This was issued about an hour ago. A video shot out the window of this plane as it went through the hurricanes eye I would pay for. Check out the pressure... 909mb..fuck. US and BVI's will be just dirt after this second hit.

Reports just received from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds have increased to 175 mph (280 km/h). The estimated minimum pressure based on
data from the aircraft is 909 mb (26.84).

No the difference is you probobly know what you are talking about. Unless the magazine you write for is called 'afloat' or 'coastal passage maker' these are two free mags here that publish any shit that people send them, but they don't pay anyone. Cruisers you meet along the Queensland coast love to claim they 'write for a few sailing magazines'.

I think that for some of  the vloggers that is true..... but almost certainly never true of anyone who gets a decent number of  hits.

make shit films...  you will  be guaranteed to earn shit money.

Youtube pays $1 per thousand views... so the youtbe money, the money from knockers viewing knockers , iis tiny commpared to those who chip  for  patreon, buy the merch or increasingly those who  pay for enbedded advertising such as  prooduct placement.

My guess is that each La Vag films at 20 minutes (now twice a week) takes at least three days of editing..... To make those films they probably have $10,000 worth of cameras plus some top spec laptops , a lot of data storage and their bandwidth costs must be humongous . The life expectancy of  hard used cameras on boats is around a year to 18  months.. I assume that the La vag camera man/editor earns good money from the project. Any operation turning over  $10,000 a week is serious stuff.

the costs are massive - just parking a cat the size of a tennis court plus the costs  of running the boat,  feeding people,  insurance, paperwork etc etc.

Delos and La vag are working their buts off in the hull of  a  hot  boat while those around them in the anchorage are just swimming and drinking. .  The La vag people arrived in port in one of their vids,  wanted to  go  for  a swim  but said that they were  going  to spend  the morning working - presumably editing, dealing with comments,  uploading etc  etc.

I was selling DVDs and more than covering my costs (for a 22 footer sailing within driving distance of home). I reckon running the boat in scotland 500  miiles from home, and replacing the cameras was costing me around £6,000 a year. The 1,200 or so DVD sales a year was more than covering those costs. Then the DVD sales stopped and I was down to  the buskers cup.

Then in January I finally ran out of  money for  the project, sold the boat and stopped filming.  Now I am like  Tom and post crud about my local river.

Tom has offered me some "robust" advice on my efforts....even left some of  his "robust" advice on my website.... which I removed.

bad comments about the vloggers and how  they hate the films and the genre is rife. People love to criticise them - even for the way they keep  their sheets and ropes.

. However, here are some awful  truths for you chaps.  The only people  the patreon vloggers care about  are those who chip  in.  All the other stuff is just noise that they have to edit out of  the comments left on youtube - as they do,.. as do  I.. .

it always amazes me that people are so engaged with the material that they write about how crap it  is yet when the image of  the pretty girl on the foredeck comes up  they still click on it. As many say they have never watched a whole la vag episode.  I don't  think I have either.  They don't care about us - they care about are those who tap in, buy the merch etc etc. They give not a  flying fig for the moaners.

This autumn I will be posting the remaining ten films from KTL. Each will  be around 45 minutes long, will have a  proper  narrative, a good voice over, a bit of brain food, some excellent well  filmed scenery. Each film will take  me about two  weeks of hard graft at the computer to  make. Tom et al place no value on that work at all. When they watch the films all they see is  some-one sailing in a place they would rather like  to go yet never will ... that pisses them off so they attack.

I expect that each of  the last ten films will  get  around 12,000 views in its first year.  About three per cent of  the people who  wqtch the films to  the end will be fairly regular tappers.... the rest will never tap  in.

Nothing wrong with that...  this is  the web.

There have been a few comments on this thread along the lines of "I don't watch la Vag because it is crap.  I watch Dylan,s films right to the end.... but do  not pay for those either." Well chaps.... La Vag goes from strength to  strength because they are offering what the market is  prepared to  pay for while KTL is on its last ten films.

In this world you get get you you pay  for -  even if it offered to you free at the point of delivery

^^^ Good synopsis there Dylan. Many people don't appreciate the work/expense that goes into doing what some of these floggers and you do. It ain't recreation with a bit of GoPro..it is a fuckin serious business and with associated costs. How that "job to do" process spoils their enjoyment is not appreciated.

PS. Dylan if you put tits in your great stuff or tell us you are going to buy a cat then get prepared for the wrath of Zeus....I will be depressed if you don't include that lighthouse tip I sent you.

Tom has offered me some "robust" advice on my efforts....even left some of  his "robust" advice on my website.... which I removed.

I did? Not denying, just don't recall commenting on your site at all.

But if I said something you felt compelled to remove I apologize.

Tom et al place no value on that work at all. When they watch the films all they see is  some-one sailing in a place they would rather like  to go yet never will ... that pisses them off so they attack.

I really don't recall ever attacking you. For the record, you've never sailed anywhere I want to be. I like air and water to be above 80 degrees.

Oh Dylan...a  cat...are you really ready for this?

Ouch, I see, wifey parked the car? Apparently it fits too and easier to get in...

About time to settle the cat vs mono argument once and for all: cats are superior because if they are totaled in a hurricane, you don't need to dive to salvage the beer from the fridge. Sometimes they even come to shore...

Fuck that for a living.

i think hell just froze over.

The power of the internet....this chick and her surfer boyfriend at the time started posting couples pictures on Instagram.

She now has 10 million followers.

She could quickly turbo charge ones flagging sailing channel and leave the Vagamites wallowing in your wake.

Daniel Troyer (the La Vag cameraman) quit to go and buy his own sail boat in the USA.

Looks like a 27 foot something.

I think that working under that pressure to produce that number of films, living in that small space with a couple of people whose egos and drive must be in high gear must have been extremely stressful. I have done some assignments that required spending a lot of time with the people I have been payed to film. But that was always ashore where I could go for a walk by myself at the beginning or end of the day.

Boats can be real pressure cookers - even those that are the size of tennis courts.

Hirondelles are great little boats, totally in keeping with KTL's budget and aesthetic and cruising grounds.  Just do it!

It's clear that the market has spoken.

Dylan, you're gonna have to start a GoFundme for a boob job, and if you raise enough, a butt lift. Sorry bud.

Not content with going hurricane chasing and losing their boat at St Martin courtesy of Irma and then getting airlifted to Puerto Rico while starting a GoFundUs for another boat shit... the chick split but the two guys decided to hang around in PR and see what Maria would dish out sitting on another boat....some people just don't fucking get it...they make TashNBrow look like rocket scientists.

And if you think idiots are thin on the ground...think again. This guy thought it a far better idea to pay someone $100 in  Puerto Rico to take the sails off his boat  in advance of Hurricane Maria while he jetted off to Thailand to get a hand job from a chick but with a dick & balls bigger than his.

Then again he is a genius compared to some idiotic sycophant who donated him $500 during this live feed he did enroute at the airport.

Where do all these fuckers come from??

After consulting with Aurrette for months she has fuckin finally given me the thumbs up to this gal coming on board to help me launch my Utube sailing channel...Liz has agreed to a 90/10 split on Utube and 95/5 on Patreon income in her favour. Luckily I'm independently wealthy.

I reakon we will be rolling in dough.  We are leaving Vietnam and heading north once the Typhoon season eases and then up to North Korea first where Liz and I swim ashore and while she distracts them with her rocket launchers I will disarm Rocketman's Atomic arsenal and then we expect a fuckin Noble Peace Prize....along with mega millions of followers on social media who throw cash at us like no tomorrow.

Would like to see the Vagamites match that business plan....and Dylan move to the left lane...we are overtaking.

There are only so many "come here and fuck me" over the shoulder looks one can stand, before it just looks trashy.

I'm at my limit 75 seconds into this one.

^^^ random Aurrette thinks you may have some hidden same sex issues if you only made it to 75 seconds...or is that a normal time count for you??

Anyway she has been researching sailing vlogmiesters to check out our one-line opposition. This guy kept cropping up and had her some what perplexed. As an aside it may also interest you as it involves a man.

Seems he lives in a off-grid hut in Alaska and is looking to sell so he can buy a boat and go sailing. In the interim he is a regular in internet sail vlog land giving sailing/cruising lessons which are just weird.

Aurrette said unless this fat fuck raises the Titanic on the cheap.. what boat can he possibly fit on??

Sail ..or should I say Cliffy ..I just noticed your Avatar and pissed myself laughing. Love how you have taken ownership of the derision and Cliffy label (I think LB was the originator) you got on another thread when you were out of your depth...that's very funny. You are a good sport.

This is the last two vids in a series of 3 showing a presentation the Delos crew did in Fort Lauderdale before rejoining  the boat in Sth Africa to head to Brazil earlier in the year (a journey which is yet to hit the screen).

Worth a watch if your interested in how Delos produce their stuff, some interesting  stats, audience/Facebook questions etc. The audience cross section was interesting both young and old.

They probably have the largest delay between shoot and upload so it was interesting to hear that the reason was a combination of not wanting filming and producing to take over and spoil their cruising life and interfere with boat  maintenance etc and they
