That’s Brushy One String (real name: Andrew Chin)!  The only thing “lightweight“ about him is his one-string guitar :-). Well known Jamaican musician.

I met this guy down in Negril. I was staying a few hundred feet down the beach from the popular local stage 'Roots Bamboo' and would drop by each evening to see who was playing. A lot of sensational local bands...at another venue further down the beach the likes of Sean Paul and BeenieMan could be seen for a 10 buck cover charge.

Anyway, one night I rolled in and took up my familiar place at the bar and I see this dude roll in, wearing some kind of fedora with a two foot feather sticking out the back, probably topping out at a little over five feet, and getting all the respect of the locals and other musicians hangin around. So I ask, 'Who the hell is this guy? What's his deal?'...'That's Brushy One String man'...'Oh yeah, what's up with that?...'He plays with one string man'...

The guy absolutely killed it. Played with one string and you'd never know. Met him after the show...a real character.

At least they'd actually be doing something interesting while looking hot.

I lost interest in the above video when they filmed themselves napping in a hammock.

Unfortunately, I don't know where to find 2 or 3 hot babes who want to fix up my boat. Well...I know of one but she's all mine and I'm not sharing. :)

Ajax, here is your girl.

That is an excruciating video - even very quickly skipping through in 15 sec FF’s - all chatting.  It’s the black tank top dude (who starts by complaining about West Marine, a fair target), then her cleaning out her clothes closet on the boat.  Do these people think we have time to watch gack like this?

I feel like you've shown this one before...at least the ass-up shot is very familiar.  This thumbnail is such blatant sexual pandering that I refuse to click on it. Look, I love beautiful woman as much as any other straight guy but the constant drumbeat that we're all a bunch of dumb, over-sexed animals that can't resist clicking on this shit is really, really fucking tiresome.

Without clicking, I will confidently wager that there is no worthwhile content in the video and all that's worth seeing is right here in the thumbnail.

@dylan winter Eh, no need to apologize. You're looking at it analytically, it's not like you're pimping for them. But seriously, the data point that "sex sells" is hardly late-breaking news. We get it.

I recently stumbled upon a Youtube video warning/complaining about new FTC/COPPA regulations that has "content creators" all in a tizzy because the FTC has basically said "in the name of protecting children, we can and will sue any content creator into oblivion and we plan to make examples out of some people." These regulations take effect on January 1st.

I wonder how this will impact all these people who rely on soft porn to peddle their worthless content.

Not sure I've seen anything I'd call soft porn on Youtube.  It's all fairly tame fare --- and these sailing vids are certainly not as racy or offensive as most of the explicit lyrics to many of today's pop songs.  But each of us has our own yardstick when deciding what's cute, what's sexy, what's trashy etc.  You say "we get it" but I think that you should expect to continue to see more of the same...because the title of the thread is "Girl with Patreon account goes sailing in hot place."  After all, each of these vids gives us one more thing to debate.:D

Remember the days of Ed Meese?  If he were still in charge, half the internet would be banned.  Of course, Bill Barr is aching to follow in his footsteps, but he has a full-time job keeping you know who out of you know what.  Basically, Meese picked a few scapegoats to persecute and the rest of the party went on unabated.

FTC is maybe a more "satisfying" agency to use than DOJ because FTC is judge, jury, and prosecutor, all in one.  They never lose.  But basically they just run around burning a few witches and holding press conferences about it.  Unless you are one of the people who get burned, it makes little difference.

Edit: Oops, stupid mistake.  I meant 90% of the internet.

I do expect to see more of the same because mostly, men (and boys) are ungoverned in their desires and they WILL click on a shit video with no meaningful content with the desperate hope of a quick glimpse of side-boob.  I'm just not one of those guys.

Look, I'm no prude. I'm not offended by nudity. I just think that videos like this are not even worth the cost of "free."  I'm just not that lonely and desperate in my life that I'm willing to listen to 15 minutes of talking head because they posted a misleading thumbnail with the woman ass-up.  It's shitty, sleazy, used car salesmanship. It works for them for the same reason that it works for sleazy used car salesmen. Yeah, they're successful. Congrats.

Somewhere in landlocked, wintry Kansas, there's an unhappy guy fapping away in front of his computer at this thumbnail while handing over his dollars to Patreon. That's their target audience.

@toddster  I definitely don't advocate banning anything. I guess I just wish that viewers weren't so base and predictable and that these things would die a natural death all on their own. That's a fantasy.

(And why would anyone pay for Patreon sailing account 'porn' when there's an internet full of the stuff for free?)

Probably one of easiest place to go high latitude sailing (see below) (if only b/c there’s never any ice!  But plenty of storms...)  I would love to go out the Aleutians and, especially, up to the islands in the Bering Sea that are covered in huge walruses (US National Park/nature reserve) — incredible animals/raw, wild nature.

I actually watched it.  (Well, there was some skipping ahead).

It's better than some of the sailing videos linked upthread:

  1. The people playing in the mud with their trucks knew what they were doing and were at an organized, well-run event.
  2. Camera work and editing were competent.
  3. The young women in the thumbnail actually appeared in the video.

In the 1990s, in the dawn of the internet, I had a website about 1940s Jeeps.  It was popular, and highly ranked at yahoo.com.  One day they changed their algorithms and no one visited any more.  The more things change, the more they stay the same

Google algorithms aside, those who seek out quality content can find it.  At the same time, those who seek out risque not-quite-porn videos can find those too

My wife and I used to work as street performers.  In that business you learn quickly that the two things that draw tips are danger and sexual content.  Fire performers.  Knife throwing.  Sexy costumes.  Bawdy songs.

I still do lots of work in the performing arts that is good and life affirming but that doesn't pay.

I think the comparison with street performing is a good one

youtube is like busking - the performer is hoping that one per cent of the people  passing by will drop some cash in the pot. (actually for La vag et al it is more like 0.4 per cent)

It as if you  are doing something clever with a trombone or a fiddle and are earning some cash by busking and along comes a troop of fire-eaters not wearing many clothes - all the oxygen gets used up and the witty trombist gets blown out of the water.

I hear what you say about being able to find good content - but not through a search algorithmn.

the youtube street is packed with pulchitudinous performers while under a pillar somewhere in an underpass is some-one who is doing good work with 70 hits in three months

@dylan winter

An apt description. I seek out the 70-hit people under the highway overpass, the trombists and fiddlers.  I'll watch the fire-eaters for eating fire, but not fire-eaters who say "watch me sit around talking about eating fire because I'm naked and you'll give me money because you're a dumb animal who can't help himself."

As a complete aside, I've worked with some truly amazing jugglers and fire performers and unicycle riders.  And acrobats.  Several who are full-time professionals who make good money at this, corporate gigs, cruise ships, ads, TV and movie stunts.  I am spoiled, and things like the sunset show at Mallory Square in Key West are a huge disappointment for me, because they aren't in the same league.

The best fire performers I've met are passionate about fire and movement and dance.  They're pagans.  It's a worship experience for them.  They work hard, and rehearse.  Most of their rehearsals are unlit, and then they'll do maybe one or two lit rehearsals of new material or with new members, before they perform in public.  The ones I know best are part of a multigenerational troupe, married couples, their children.  Their costumes and shows are sexy but not overly so.  They use live music.

They are fantastically successful as a busking act.  Because of the fire and the safety implications, they perform only where they are invited and where they can get insurance.  They get paid a little to show up by whatever event they're at and collect tips.  I would guess they gross around $100 per half hour show, maybe twice that on a good day.  They'll do six or seven shows a day.  Sounds like good money until you pay the insurance and inevitable costume and prop repairs and then divide it among 10 people.

And so they sit around and try to figure out ways to make more money just like the youtubers do.

They all have day jobs.

This reminds me of a small clique of ultra-nerds, back in my college days the Late Pleistocene.  These guys were like, double-major biochemistry and physics and such.  Recognizing the need to maintain physical fitness, they eschewed mundane activities like running or basketball. Instead, they took up unicycle-riding and juggling.  One-wheeling around campus with huge stack of books under one arm and a smug expression of superiority.  I wonder where those guys ended up?

  Just to go back to COPPA and why every channel on YouTube.com is freaking out;

COPPA was passed in the Clintons 1st term, it was significantly increased in Obama's 2nd term.  It was rarely enforced, but it allows the Gov't to go after the platform as opposed to individual creators.  What has changed is that now YouTube has decided to automatically scrub anybody with content that involves anybody under an arbitrary age arbitrarily.  Families that involve their children their videos, done.  Along with a $175Mil fine against YouTube.

Oddly, I suspect La Vag & Ste Greta will be exempt.  And the hypocrisy will be breezed over.

If you have an hour to kill, here it is in a nutshell.

Hey, that was my post :)  I’m the person the YT algorithms can’t get, so I find my own content :).

The true story of how I found that video.  I was browsing around the web the other day looking for solar panel mounting ideas and remembered S/V Seal,  which I recall reading about many years ago —a seriously well fitted out high latitudes charter boat sailed by Hamish and Kate Laird (who, some may know, used to skipper Skip Novak’s S/V Pelagic down in Patagonia/Antarctica —see the book ‘Rounding the Horn’ for a good sailor’s account of sailing on Pelagic as a charter guest).

So off I went to expeditionsail.com’s site (where they have a few of their recent vids, refreshingly without any sort of YT eye candy — unless drone shots of the Aleutians and Prince William Sound are your kinda eye candy.)

It’s all good - no harm no foul, as the Brits say.  I was just wanting to tell the convoluted story of how I came across it.  (i.e., in a way more interesting, circuitous, almost serendipitous fashion than, “YouTube recommended it to me” :-) )

A friend, a schoolteacher, had significant trouble with a 12 year old girls parents after a written report saying he thought she was precocious.

The first he found out was the heavy hand of authority suspending him until review of a complaint that he'd made lewd comments about their daughter. Fortunately Paul was intelligent and confident enough to immediately go over their heads with the full facts including that he was ignoring the suspension.

A couple of years ago there was a successful diving vlog (very well shot) called drenched.  Lots of grabby thumbnails.

They spent some time on Delos and then bought a masssive old tub, filled it with 10 young people and started on what I am sure is the most expensive sailing vlog on the web.

I had not been offered any of their material in my youtube feed (too fulll  of  Trumpism) so I sought them out

this is their vids organised by hits

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo1SVuhySkvvbMxWljBSY1g/videos?view=0&sort=p&flow=grid

and this by date

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo1SVuhySkvvbMxWljBSY1g/videos?view=0&sort=dd&flow=grid

averaging 20,000 views per film - giving them a youtube income of about $50 a week - which will only just cover the lentil bill for their big crew.

Patreon income is now much harder to work out now  that most of  the  vloggers hide the income details

https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=4378177&redirect_uri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.expeditiondrenched.org%2Fdonate.html&utm_medium=widget

I would have had them down as ticking all the right boxes.....

Have to agree. What's the old line..."The way you look speaks so loud that I can't hear what you are saying"?   Yes, I sound like my grandmother back in the 1960s. But the fact is, if they want to have broad appeal in the vlog world, they need to think about how they present themselves. I smell patchouli and BO...but maybe that's just me.

Hippies smell of BO and patchouli oil.

Old sailing blokes smell of damp wool, lamp oil and good tobacco. And also sometimes, rum.  I know which I prefer.  ;)

It's a bit of a hot-button word around here... turns out that "abandoned" is millenial-speak for "I stole it."

I tried the more dramatic thumbnail and title approach, didn't change anything else. Helped views for sure. It seems the key word is Abandoned... Technically not clickbait because it is my boat and the title is true.... But views quadrupled.

Really? New one on me and I have a millennial in the house.

Growing up in the early 70's in Cambridge Mass alongside smelly hippies the neighborhood kids would sometimes co-opt their language and values when it suited them. For instance if one needed a new bike you could grab a pair of bolt cutters and "liberate" one.

Good on ya mate for the great progress on Zora and no, don't show us your tits but your girlfriend's tits would be appreciated.  WTF has happened, has this whole site got nipple free?
