Cleveland_Indians_logo.svg_.png.jpgThe Seattle Yacht Club, a nearly 125-year-old pleasure-boating group that hosts events around the region, recently held its annual “Potlatch” event on Bainbridge Island. Billed as an homage to traditional First Nations potlatch feasts, the event features food, boat races, a potluck dinner, and children’s activities.

In a 2009 blog post describing the history of the event, one club member and potlatch organizer wrote, “Believe it or not, in the mid-1940’s members of the Seattle Yacht Club chose this tradition on which to base a family event to be held at their newly acquired property on Bainbridge Island in beautiful Port Madison.” The Port Madison Reservation is home to many members of the Suquamish Tribe.

If you’re starting to cringe a little at the notion of a bunch of wealthy, apparently all Caucasian yacht owners appropriating a tradition from the Native people their great-grandparents forced from their ancestral homes, read no further. Instead, have a look at these images, taken during the most recent Seattle Yacht Club potlatch and posted online. Read on.

Jeezusss - I can remember that sort of shit going on when I was a little kid in 1958 at a big neighbourhood event where I grew up.

Cringeworthy indeed.

I used to be a member of the Indian Guides. It was fun.

Whatever happened to the concept that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? I for one, and I believe this is a sentiment shared by millions of others, is that the American Indian is to be respected, and to a similarly great extent, admired.

I mean, come on: what traits do you associate with the American Indian? I guess some people are just always trying to make others look bad and stir up resentment wherever they can.

"appropriating a tradition" That is a little rich or the pot calling the kettle black.... Using your math we should shame and ridicule any jew, muslim, atheist or anyone without a bona fide certified christian card for ever joining in a christian holiday or event like Christmas. Note even the Mardi Gras in New Orleans and elsewhere is a christian holiday and tradition. What about the sacred traditions of yachting.. the decorum of yachting...

It's really not that had to have a good time without resorting to cultural appropriation and racial stereotypes. You can even have a costume party without any of that bullshit.

For fuck's sake, if it were seriously immoral to 'appropriate' another's culture, there would be the equivalent of patents or copyrights available to protect "your" customs and rituals. I'm so sick of this bullshit, and no, an actual racist in charge ain't gonna help. Go watch Blazing Saddles. It's offensive as hell but not one bit racist. Likewise the yahoos dressing up in these pics. America has lost the ability to lighten up and enjoy a barbed compliment, and its damn sad.

In New Orleans past, blacks were not allowed to participate in the Mardi Gras parades but there was no restriction on Indians joining in on the fun. That led to black 'Indian Tribes' and societies in order to get in on the celebration. The Black Tribes are still going strong.

I generally don't take "cultural misappropriation" or whatever seriously, the slutty college chick twerking or the white kid dressed like a bad Easy E is not appropriating black culture in a way that I give a shit about (as a black person) as that is fun stuff that we black people market and sell so if white people take it up that's OK IMO. But do these yacht club people know what they are imitating? Did they check with some local Native Americans? Suppose they were playing around with something that's a sacred religious ceremony or something? I don't know the answer to these questions and the article didn't seem to ask. They've been having these potlachs since the mid 40s although it's not clear that the costumes are always part but have they ever consulted with the local native Americans on what's cool or not? or better yet invited them over to talk about their culture? Not everything in someone else's culture is just stuff for you to have fun with.

i signed eva to a 5 year deal. great performer, played her almost every day, in every position. but the team wanted to go in a new direction, so we let her go. like kenny powers, we are sorry to hear that she is out of the majors, and well over her playing weight, but wish her the best as she struggles in double a ball. we were stunned to find mary was available. quickly signed her to a very long-term deal and are more than happy with the new direction the team is headed.

Oh come on.. SYC is not too bad if you like powerboats

I went to Potlatch with my family on our Olson 30 for years. The powerboat nation can be fun, and the weekend is mainly for the kids, who know nothing about the Indian aspect other than the fun to be had with their parents and other kids. Potlatch is a traditional gathering of the clans, and a time to celebrate the season. I still have a few badges from past years!

how far back are you willing to go to find the 'first' owners?

because you can bet your arse that indian tribes killed other indian tribes and 'stole' their land.

fact is conquest happened and it wasn't just whiteys doing it.

The amazing thing is the seeming obliviousness of what should be these highly educated well connected people to the fact that this is 100% wholly inappropriate and NOT DONE in 2016. This is a big city yacht club, how could these people be so backward and unsophisticated? I don't know if the local first nation even finds it offensive but it's offensive in its cluelessness.

An example of more appropriate cultural dress was a recent power boat rally involving Royal Van Yacht Club which seemed to have a whole of of people dressed up as pirates. Given actual pirates probably had plenty of representation from second sons and illegitimate offspring of the English nobility, it seems somehow quite right for Vancouver.

Since it was illegal for natives to practice potlach until 1951, it seems pretty absurd that white folks could do it in the forties. And to still do it today is amazing.

I guess this means that people should take exception to native americans in cowboy hats.

Yep, and certainly don't go to a Notre Dame football game and dress like a leprechaun unless you are Irish. And don't cheer for the Minnesota Vikings wear viking clothing unless you are Scandanavia (I will be offended since I am all Scandinavian). And we need to criticize the Louies Last Regatta in Milwaukee since people are encouraged to dress up in all kinds of offensive garb to raise money for Childrens Hospital. Just terrible!!

And certainly don't go to the Sailing Anarchy website, they sometimes have pictures of women in positions and clothing (or lack there of) that could be offensive and degrading to women.
