      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

wait a day or two - it seems to flop all over the place!!!  

same day routing by different models have us either 300 north of rhumb or  200 south of rhumb. Go figure.

Weird mental separation I have.  I always associate Transpac with Oahu, but Pac Cup with Kaneohe.  After ten of these it's just I how roll!

Here are our guestimates, bummed that Sweet Okole isn't racing this Transpac.

Division 0: Agree.

I would place my bet's on:

 

Division 0:  Pass 

Division1: Comanche: Difficult to bet against Honey and one of the biggest badest boats on the planet.

Division 2: Have to go with the Mouse and their boat speed, very difficult to bet against O'Brien and the GI team.

Division 3: Always difficult to beat a J 125, Fuller runs a well prepared boat they are going to have to catch Varuna? It will be close, Resolute for the win, both boats will do well overall

Division 4: I view this fleet in aah, ten similar boats, you can almost call it the last of corinthian class/one design ocean racing? For all the 40 + year old armchair racers this year with the dream, in what other class can you have real food, with a real head and a dry bunk? Then add the exhilaration of "Fast is Fun", aboard Horizon in this years Coastal Cup we hit a new boat speed recorded of 28.8 knots. Why would you not want to join this class?

It would bring us the wrong JuJu if I was to bet on this class, I might point out we did have a substantial delta on the rest of our fleet in this years Coastal Cup. To the other competitors in our class, enjoy the moment this is going to be a memorable race.

Division 5: I am going to have to go with Locomotive, they have been on the race course this year and will have to assume they are the best prepared.

Division 6: I do have any information on this fleet, although always difficult to bet against a Hobie 33

Division 7: How to you bet against Pearlman, 7th Trans Pac, good crew and well prepared. They will have to sail fewer miles than the Cal 40's.

 

Lets hope for wind!

Just ran the race on Expedition.

Lots of options!

But for us, the fifth is looking like the best starting day. 35 hours faster than the third, and 10 hours faster than the sixth.

Weather is looking pretty unstable. It's going to take some good legs to stay in the pressure and great decision making on the fly to avoid getting swallowed up in light air. But, it's going to be great racing with and against so many friends.

Just wait.....it'll change.  Looks like the Monday starters have some pressure to get away from the coast today - already quite breezy for them.

Just saw a big tri with black sails go by the office here in carlsbad.  I suspect it was Mighty Merloe.  It was deceptively fast, like a freighter.  One minute it is several miles to the south, sailing calmly along in the 8-10 kts we usually have here.  A few minutes later it's directly in front, and a few minutes after that it's off to the north. By the time I call my wife to tell her about it, it's gone.

Kaneohe is on the NE shore of Oahu...Or are you thinking of Hanalei Bay on Kauai?

Thanks. I saw them head to Newport Beach then Long Beach now. Where  the AIS shows their location, probably getting loaded on a ship.

Is yellowbrick reading worth a damn for everyone else?  Marine traffic and VesselFinder have the fast boats around Catalina.  Yellowbrick has them at the dock. What gives?

yellowbrick is on a multi-hour delay so teams cannot use it as a tracking tool for strategy against other boats.

@valis: Just noticed that Mighty Merloe hasn't reported her position in over 1h23m, but Maserati gave her position just 2m ago (AIS). I'd venture a guess that MM has gone into stealth mode, if that's allowed.

In case it has not been mentioned earlier, it is possible to follow the race in real time on https://www.vesselfinder.com/

Maserati and Phaedo 3 have been  dueling since Catalina.  Right now Maserati is hanging onto its lead with 34.7 kts, while Phaedo 3 is doing 28.2 kts and Comanche is gamely following with  20.3 kts.

To clarify- I already have a ride back to the mainland.  I am looking for any resources, online or in person in Hawaii, that can help out those returning to California.  Are there daily check-ins we can participate in? Maybe a party or get together for those returning? Weather briefings for returners?   

Does anyone know if anything like this exists?  I suppose some of the best people to talk to are in the middle of the pacific right now....

AIS Tracking -- The shoreside AIS receivers stop reliably receiving the Class-B transponders somewhere past San Clemente island (most of the racers carry Class-B).  Beyond that the reception gets very spotty and you may only get an occasional decode with long gaps between.  Class-A transponders transmit with more power (25W vs 3W) and can be picked up at a somewhat greater distance, but beyond 50 - 100 NM you generally won't get any reception at all.  There can be radio propagation anomalies such as tropospheric ducting that can extend this range, but this isn't usually the case, and I'm not seeing any evidence of this now.

You can pick up AIS in mid-ocean by paying marinetraffic.com for satellite AIS reception, and while this works fairly well for Class-A transponders, the Class-B reception is quite marginal -- I've seen gaps up to 24 hours between AIS decodes of Class-B.  So once the boats get beyond reliable shore-based AIS reception, I think we are limited to the Yellowbrick tracker.

During some of the recent Pacific Cup races, the raw undelayed Yellowbrick data was available if you knew the secret URL.  I believe there was some unpleasantness when someone on the course figured out the link.  Perhaps this system has changed now.

Well, is this the race where offshore foiling finally shows itself to be an advantage?  At this point, looks like Maserati is giving Faedo more than a fight (without needing Faedo to take a wrong turn).  Mighty Merlow not exactly chopped liver at this point, either.

Appears as though Maserati has a lead of 13 over Phaedo, and is currently going more than 3knts faster (both position reports at same time).

 It's up to you to chat up the delivery crews. There will always be a SSB check in / bullshit schedule amongst the returning boats. Since all boats now use Sat phones/e-mail, there will also be a lot of messages sent back & forth. Addresses are easily gotten by talking to the boats, everyone wants to stay in contact with each other. Other support services can also be found by asking around crews or at Hawaii Yacht club/Waikiki YC

The YBTracking update a few minutes ago, shows Mighty Merloe ahead at 1000h HST/ 1300 DST. That's my team!  Allez, skipper Loïck Peyron !

^ Maserati is 18mi ahead of Mighty Merlot, and is carrying a 3knt speed advantage.  Seems the wind and seas is working for the foiling tri, at this point.  Impressive what the former IMOCA is doing to Phaedo at this point.  I did not know Loick was on it.  Very cool.

By the way, Merlin, Pyewacket, and Runaway have all been within sight of eachother all day.  Couple of SC70s very close, too.

Comanche was probably within sight of some of the next group when she blazed through, today, too, going twice the speed of almost all other monos (except Rio).  Would have been a highlight of the passage for those boats.

It appears the lane to the final approach is going to be critical as there are soft spots in there. Has this southerly approach ever been a fast one? I always thought the rhumb line or north of it is the common course.

Interesting splits/maneuvers between the three big tris.  Maserati still holding a speed edge and a 26 mile advantage over Phaedo, but now behind in DTF to Mighty Merloe.  VERY cool race developing between those two.

Pyewacket starting to develop a small lead over Merlin, my favorite race, right now.  GO MERLIN!!!

Yeah, the ol' girl can still run with the best of them. Cool to be able to see Merlin in Santa Cruz when out visiting the bro. Stood on the dock where the pic of Bill Lee was taken for the TP page article.

Yeah, I went by and saw her back in April while visiting SC, too.  Wish she was still white and had the old cabin, though.  I don't think my wife and kids really understood why I thought she was a big deal.

Yeah, my mom, who was along for the ride to see the sights of California, was a bit mystified also. Having lived and saw the TP boats while we were in Hawaii understood to a certain degree. If it had been Windward Passage she might have taken a look herself.

Maserati's split is getting bigger and bigger.  Now at a a 29mi deficit to Mighty Merloe, and a slight lead over Phaedo, but the split will likely make the difference, one way or the other.  Have to believe they were very concerned about light air ahead in the northern route hurting them with the foils, as they had the speed advantage over both MM and Phaedo over the past day, so why otherwise not "cover"?  Looking at Windytv, certainly looks like the south has  significant amount more wind.  Will be interesting to watch.  Comanche, behind the big tris, appears to be kind of splitting the difference between Maserati and the other two tris, and I trust Stan Honey's analysis.

Will be interesting to watch this develop tomorrow.

You nailed it, that would be her. She is a veteran of crossing the Molokai channel twice, once upwind and then downwind home.

Only an hour to the FL separates Phaedo3 and Mighty Merloe, as she maintains her lead over Maserati, and holds 1st place in the Multihulls Division. You can do it, MM Team!

What's up with Rio 100?  Tracker has her down to 10 knots for awhile now. Was heading due south as well. Now back to a port tack heading but still slow.

The one boat ( besides the multis) that really impresses me is Dark Star, the Hobie 33. Every time I check the tracker, there she is trucking along. kudos to the crew.

I thought that the 2 MOD 70 on steroids would left the ORMA 60 in their wake, but either Loïck Peyron is really making a difference or Mighty Merloe is indeed mighty !

Well MOD 70s are essentially ORMA 60s but with longer hulls, and slightly heavier. So no real surprise. 

Masarati will have no data numbers to work from, which may explain her weather routing, and there was a comment from Phaedo (twitter I think) that they are missing their multihull expert and were being a bit cautious.

That said, Loick could make a bathtub fly! He is the Maitre de Jedi....

Not just Loic but also Franck Proffit and Jacques Vincent. They added quite a bit of French multi experience.
I sometimes wonder how that works. Money make the world go round for the highest bidder vs. getting paid a bit for taking part in a major race that was on the bucket list.

Meanwhile: 24h record in the Transpac goes to Comanche 484.1nm,  20.2 kts avg.

They lost Brian Thompson before the race. Probably their most experienced all around member

^  Bummer.  Wondering where their speed advantage went.  Would have loved to see Maserati & Phaedo both go at 100% in a long passage like this to see how the foiling panned out.  No chance to foil on the port tack with that rudder gone.  Now just dragging more foil around.

Oh well, rooting for Mighty Merloe, anyway.  Looking solid.  Fun if they set they win with all the talk going in for Phaedo & Maserati.

i tried to download the current yellow brick app on my android tablet after this current transpac started and was notified that i had to pay to use it.  did not pay to download current yellow brick app to use on tablet and decided to just use my laptop to check out the tracker.  i then noticed that i had previous yellow brick app downloaded on tablet and it works with the current transpac, old app works ok but does not have all the added features yellow brick added for this current transpac tracking.

Maserati is showing the speed advantage, again, on the starboard tack, back on their good rudder.  MM with a 44mi lead over Phaedo with 703 miles to go, Phaedo currently w/ 1.6knt speed advantage, but MM tracking closer to the rumbline.

Merlin a bit less than 4mi behind Pyewacket.

At the moment it's only a 0.8 kn advantage, and Maserati is maybe 7° higher than Phaedo (though hard to tell with 30 nm separation). It's a very interesting tactical duel.

According to the tracker, over the last 24hrs:

  • Maserati: 471nm
  • Phaedo 3: 507 nm
  • Mighty Merloe: 519nm

That may be distance toward finish rather than through the water, so may not reflect actual boat speed.

A bit hard to compare since the transpac record is in a fixed 24h time period (0800 to 0800) and their writers are not talking. ;)
As of writing this they are all doing above 500nm in the last 24h. Phaedo3 552nm, Maserati 511nm, Mighty Merloe 501nm. Followed by Comanche 403nm.
No 24h distance on the tracker during replay, that makes it hard to check for past performance...

No baiting here, just always get a kick out of the fact that the boat that weighs and costs more than all the multihulls combined - is a day back, yet people are still amazed by her.

Does the tracker go live at some point as they approach?  With the tris all going so fast the four hour delay is a big time spread. Thinking of launching the RIB to go chase the finishers this evening.

Merlin is hanging in there with Pyewacket and among the SC and Andrews 70's. I think Pyewacket is a 1/2 know faster most times I checked but she is running right with them.
