      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

      Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Rio is the Barn Door winner for the first monohull to finish that is not power assisted. Comanche gets the first monohull of any type finish, and Mighty Merloe gets the multihull trophy. This was broken out a number of years ago once more than traditional monohull's started racing.

Is it that Comanche has a powered canting keel and RIO doesn't?  Comanche's sail handling systems are all human powered I believe

Going all over Tarnation! What the hell! Mr. Bill 400+ miles separated from Pyewacket and 150 miles back on DTF... and the southernmost boat?

There is a massive hole developing over most of the fleet.  I think Mr. Bill to the south and Medusa to the north are trying to sail around it.

I think Varuna is staying ahead of the hole.  Class leader Resolute is starting to slow, and could hand the lead over to Varuna.  Projected finish times at their current vmg has Varuna winning, but average vmg still has Resolute winning.

forgive me for asking. i've been confused for a bit on the days. if they started on friday at 1:00pm california time and finished thursday...doesn't that put them at six days? this is for all boats that have been finished. why is it a day longer than actual days? again, forgive me, I clearly am missing something.

I uh... yeah, I knew that all along... Today is Thursday right? Sheesh.  Anyway, the Pac52 class seems to have hit what the TP 52 class was originally shooting for.  Good for them!

Weird. Comanche is man powered with a hydro keel. Rio is powered winches with a fixed keel. 

 

Maybe time to rethink things?

Rio is not power assisted?? Without pedestals that is a lot of top handling....

Agreed.  I recall reading when Comanche was launched that they specifically did not include powered sail handling systems in order to qualify for various world records without the asterisk.  She should get the Barn Door

Comanche has a single hydraulically powered winch strategically located for use with most lines. The remaining winches are pedestal powered.

On a race like Transpac, there's no differentiation between powered winches and powered canting keel, neither is eligible for the Door.

As a result, I would expect Comanche had a fuel weight strategy and that engine use was moderate, but when the thing was running, the powered winch was in use.

Monohull yachts not having RRS 51 or 52 waivers will be eligible for the Barn Door Trophy, all others will be eligible for the Merlin Trophy.

Rule 51 is about moveable ballast

Rule 52 is about powered standing rigging, running rigging, appendages and spars

Medusa didn't need a motor to gybe!

I think the boats are put in the 100mile tracker page manually right before they hit the 100 mile limit. I made the same mistake with Loereal up thread a bit.

Yeah, the same thing happened with Resolute.  Heading 0-degrees, speed 0 kts.  They are not updating the leaderboard today.  Last update for boats showing up on the live tracker was 4 hours ago.

The SC 52's & 50's are coming-in at a regular pace now, several miles separating each boat. Watched one come through the Diamond Head cam a while ago and another due to come by in a few minutes.

The latest is they ripped across the main a couple of days out, spent 36 hours patching it back together, then it let go again before the finish. I will have to speak to Kuli when he gets home.

Then add the exhilaration of "Fast is Fun", aboard Horizon in this years Coastal Cup we hit a new boat speed recorded of 28.8 knots. Why would you not want to join this class?

It would bring us the wrong JuJu if I was to bet on this class, I might point out we did have a substantial delta on the rest of our fleet in this years Coastal Cup. To the other competitors in our class, enjoy the moment this is going to be a memorable race.

Division 5: I am going to have to go with Locomotive, they have been on the race course this year and will have to assume they are the best prepared.

Division 6: I do have any information on this fleet, although always difficult to bet against a Hobie 33

Division 7: How to you bet against Pearlman, 7th Trans Pac, good crew and well prepared. They will have to sail fewer miles than the Cal 40's.

 

Lets hope for wind!

Looks like my picks where at best 50/50?

Div. 1  Do ratings count in this Div?

Div 2. Mouse won, GI might have done better with more breeze at the end.

Div 3. I missed the winner, although not far off target

Div 4. I love it when a plan comes together.

Div 5. This was obvious from the start.

Div 6. Difficult to beat a Hobie 33.

Div 7. My second picks took it, with the Cal 40's.

Thats four out of seven divisions, with my back ups staying close.

 

Observation: Top four overall winners were sailed very well, there we also planning boats. Should the next Trans Pac place the planning boats into their own division, with their own overall?

IMHO. Time to jump on to the bandwagon.  Although I think planing is better than planning, but that's just me!

Would be interesting to see a growth in the PAC 52 class from the 70's owners.  All sorts of events could be revived in SoCal with this class.

Dude, I don't think so.  With the exception of Div 1,2 and 7, the winning boats posted the fastest elapsed time.  Div 1, Commanche would need to start in another time zone to correct. Rio, might be a diff story if they didn't break a rudder.

Div 2, Might have changed Merlin vs Catapult as they rate pretty close, otherwise the splits are quite wide.

Div 7, with Azure giving assistance we will never know!

Hitch - not sure I agree with you and Dude - one race should not be the determining factor.  

2015 Transpac - 1st GI, 2nd Pyewacket, 3rd Bolt (TP52), 4th OEX, 5th Buona Sera (SC70)

2013 Transpac - 1st Dorade, 2nd Pyewacket, 3rd Alchemy, 4th Sleeper (Jeanneau 44), 5th Meanie (RP52)

Seems like the pole boats have had some great success in recent years.  Is everyone afraid of the Pac 52's?  We feel we can beat them in the right conditions.  Every dog has it's day, and they were the right horse for the course this past go around.

Congratulations to Invisible Hand and Bad Pak for a great race and result.

Hey Chris, congrats again to the Varuna team on a great race, and so cool you could do that with your daughter.  See you soon out on some race course someplace.  I bought a Finn just before TP.  You may want to jump into that "old guy" fun (pain) class.  Tim

Any idea on rough cost for bareboat charter, 50ish feet, turnkey for Transpac?  J World is not getting back to me.

             I spoke to Wayne and it sounds like J World already has Hula Girl chartered for 2019. I don't know if the new boat has been chartered yet. But, there is talk of adding a third offshore boat to the J World program. 

            If you want a SC50 I would talk to Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club about chartering Allure. Bill donated it a year or two ago. It's a fast SC50.
