      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

      Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Transpac 2017 is now accepting Entries - and with less than a year to go - time to start planning. Interest is quite a bit higher than previous years.

Thank you for posting the vid.

We received 16 entries in 8 days - with a few more SC50's/SC52's signing up in the next few days.

 

Are there any Class 40 sailors interested in doing Transpac?

I need to find a ride ASAP.

The J125 "Can't touch this" just signed up - and they are in the Bay area. They make 21 entries to date, and there is already a SC50/SC52 class, with a few more boats scheduled to sign up shortly.

 

There will be a page set up for crew looking for positions in a month or so.

Update -

 

25 boats now entered, with more showing interest.

 

J125's - could have a class - and arguably one of the best rides to Hawaii for its size.

 

Timeshaver - is going...

RAISIN CANE! - entered

CAN'T TOUCH THIS - entered

Reinrag - said they were going.....

Resolute - raced the last few Transpacs - will not sit on the sidelines with this many J125's....

 

Looks like a great turnout so far with over 9 months to go.

Transpac has 34 entries now, about 13 more than we had 2 years ago at this point. Still have a few 70's out there, plus one J125 that we know about, and quite a few others in cruising/aloha class that expressed interest.

We are "reading", and trying to get more J125's. Timeshaver says they are going.... but have not entered. If they do, that makes 4 J125's, and perhaps we could find a few more.

And rough numbers for shipping a TP52 from Australia to LA is about $40k plus $1500 for 20' container. This does not include clearance charges. Got the numbers from a Yacht Broker Friend.

Reminder that March 1 is the deadline for fully paid standard entry fee. The price goes up a fair bit after that. Currently at 43 boats registered with about 10 more in the wings.

Fujin just entered. We are racing the Caribbean 600 in a couple weeks and then three more regattas in the Caribbean. In mid April we leave St Maarten for a 4000 mile delivery through the canal to Long Beach with a stopover in the San Blas islands. What could go wrong?

 

There are now 4 multihulls entered including the Orma 60 Mighty Merloe and the Gunboat 62 Chim Chim. I think we'll see at least a couple more.

49 boats entered with four J-125s, should be a great race.

There are also 9 SC 50/52's, with Flaca and Allure possibly entering in the next couple weeks making 11 for the class. In addition to the 4 - J125's, there is talk of the Farr 400 entering with the Andrews 40 which is currently under going some mods.

I am OK losing to Tim - he seems to beat us every Transpac by 1 place. Now with him carrying a little extra weight (bodies) to Hawaii - we may have a chance...

The Race has had a few withdrawal's with just over a month to go.  Fujin and Timeshaver are among them, and we wish them the best and hope they can participate in 2019 (50th anniversary).

Classes are shaping up, hosts are being selected for participants, slip assignments, etc. are all being sorted.  Hopefully we'll get some better weather this year than the previous years.  It has been a slow race for some time (for the Thursday Starters).

Saw Comanche loaded on a ship in Narrangasset Bay today.  Rig up, keel on.  All by its lonesome, but looking like they were about to depart.  Presumably to LA for Transpac.

Not sure I really want to know.  If we (Summit 40) go up against the J-125's it's gojng to be a bit of a hate mission.  Just for comparison with a sample polar, the J's are about a day faster!

We start on the 5th with the Santa Cruz 50/52s and the other fast downwind oriented boats from 40 to 46'.

The boat went through some mods - longer sprit, deeper keel, new rudder and a new sail inventory.  Not sure what the mods did to the rating or performance - but they are in our class along with Resolute -

The owners goal was to get the boat rating close to or even with the J-125's.  Should have the potential to get there with the mods, not so sure about the team though.

I wonder when the ratings will be out.  

Nice to see that Fast Exit secured some heavy hitters in the driving department.  I, for one, am really curious to see the potential of this boat.  One of the nicest surveys I've done this year.

Yes, it will be interesting since it's the only boat in the class with a real interior. All the other boats are pretty stripped out.

Weather is starting to look more summertime-ish, which is nice.

Hey - we have an interior.....we are an IRC racer/cruiser with galley and enclosed head.  We even have headroom for someone 6' 3" down below.  Much more comfortable then those Santa Cruz thingy's....And Tom is too tall to sail in a J125 anymore.  

As for ratings, boats are getting measured this week, and we should see something soon.  We are in an interesting class, with the J125's, Andrews 40, R/P45 and Farr 400.  We'll see who gets the best weather for their boat.  Obviously, we want 25 plus knots the whole way...........

Magenta looks like Scallywags 2015 route. Ive done the other two routes. We've got a long ways to go still.

In 2015 on the J/125 Hamachi, we had a well known router helping us before the start. There was a tropical storm down south that the models showed might positively influence the weather to the south but it would require a big dive south. The morning before the start, we had a call with him and he was saying the routing was 70% in favor of the big dip to the south, but if the Tropical storm altered course, it could fall apart. Our own Expedition routing also suggested going south. The alternative was a far northern route (like the one above) but it didn't look that great. So after he was saying 70/30 N/S with more risk on the southern route, we asked him which route he would choose. He said "I would start on the rhumb line and see what happens."  Which we did and it turned out great for us. The southern boats got killed. The models evolved to favor a northern route and we ended up heading gradually north after the 2nd day and it paid off. After 5 days, Hamachi and Varuna were the northernmost boats and ended up in a horse race to the finish. The boats that dove south at the start got hammered (Timeshaver among them). Resolute was on a similar route to us staying close in the light air for the first 2-3 days but they were sailing double handed and when we finally got into the trades and saw steady 18-22, they couldn't push the boat as hard.

Sadly, Fujin had to pull the plug on Transpac this year. In late April, we were in St Martin getting ready to leave for the canal but our Canal agent told us the delays were 25-30 days for pleasure craft. So we lined up shipping from West Palm Beach to Ensenada. We had a signed deal and headed for WPB. After 1000 miles, we arrived WPB with a few days to spare before loading. Two days before loading in early May, the shipper (SevenStar) tells us they miscalculated their load and there was no room for us so we got bumped. There were late May shipping options but the schedule was getting too tight so we pulled the plug.

Yup, which just makes me worry about Thursday's starters. But, that's just how I roll.

The long range GFS model does not look terrible right now. Keep your fingers crossed.

I just want a start that gets us more than 125 miles our first 24 hour period - the last 2 Transpac Thursday Starters got screwed and by Sunday morning roll call all Thursday Starters were in last place - the middle start is due for a good bit of breeze to get us off the coast and away from those pesky J125's - no offense Trevor - and we love sailing against Tim - he is a class act!
