      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

      Moderation Team Change   06/16/2017

After fifteen years of volunteer moderation at SA, I will no longer be part of the moderation team. The decision to step aside is mine, and has been some time in the works but we did not wish to announce it in advance for a number of reasons. It's been fun, but I need my time back for other purposes now. The Underdawg admin account will not be monitored until further notice, as I will be relinquishing control of it along with my administrative privileges. Zapata will continue on as a moderator, and any concerns or issues can be directed to that account or to the Editor until further notice. Anyone interested in helping moderate the forums should reach out to Scot by sending a PM to the Editor account. Please note that I am not leaving the community, I am merely stepping aside from Admin responsibilities and privileges on the site.

Yeah, and after a hard day of sailing through the islands this Saturday I'll then have to hit the ski slopes Sunday for some fresh powder. Man, why would ANYBODY want to subject themselves to such abuse! STAY AWAY!

Ouch, that sounds like a sucky day, you have my condolences.

Maybe a Après Ski hot toddy to quell your nerves?

WL,

Can't say I miss that NOAA report. We do have our own weather issues here. First few months we got here had a hurricane go right over the house, then lava flowing towards us a month later. Interesting to say the least for this nw boy.

Saw some snow on Moana kea today on our way over to kona. They even closed the road down to Moana

Loa. So we do have all four seasons here, and you can visit them all in one day! From 80 to 29 deg. F in an hour. We need more sailors, so all of you are welcome.

Well, we'll have wind chills of 0 on Thursday. And the grid heater (think glow plugs in function) is down on my diesel pickup, so starting it should be an adventure.

My WA move fund is at $61K in cash and ~$40K in home equity (stupid divorce). You can't keep me out! Muwahaha.

My goal is 2 more years.

Winter storm watch up for the area tomorrow. 4-7 inches of snow in the forecast.

I love it!

Because all of these transplanted whimps that freak out at the first sign of snow or adverse weather will cancel everything, hide in their homes and stay off my roads! The local media is hysterical (in both meanings of that word) in its attempt to turn any weather into a major news story.

As far as 100k to move here, it should be the entry fee!!!

:P

I gotta tell you WL...........we moved quite a bit when I was growing up (Pop in the USMC). We lived in Lawton Oklahoma.....Wauwatosa, Wisc......Cherry Point, North Carolina......Quantico, Virginia......and Mom & Pop grew up in Chicago.........we've seen snow. We've had to have an electric dipstick with an extension cord run from the car to the house to keep the oil from freezing in Wisc, had to thaw the pipes in the house in Virginia with pans of snow melted on the stove, chains, snow tires, shovel the snow out of the driveway twice a day, spring thaw then freeze again and try to drive..........

When Pop retired in Cali he hung his snow shovel on the wall in the garage where he could see it every time he parked the car. Said it made him smile every time he pulled in the garage. When we lived in snow country I NEVER remember even once in the spring anyone saying "gosh I'm sorry winter is over"...............

I do not miss living in the snow. When I do, I drive up to the mountains or fly to a ski resort, play for a while and then go home and surf.

No...........no worries..........not moving to snow country. B)

(Going sailing tomorrow.......................)

No interest in Seattle. I'm a country guy/hillbilly.

Just need a little shack with water access. You know that if you have good credit you can finance, right?

$200K down assuming that makes a 20% payment assumes a million dollar house. I don't need that for myself and a dog. I just want some leeway for peace of mind.

From what I've researched, the numbers work.

Got our first taste of sub-zero air temps last night, not wind chill. It's been a very mild winter so far. Great for those of us trying to build. The people we sold a vacant lot to across the street are trying to break ground right after the first of the year. That will be tough, doable, but tough.

It started snowing here about an hour ago. Only about a half inch so far. I actually hope it snows quite a bit tonight. I put the blade on the front of the tractor today. Since I don't work, I can go out in the morning and see if I can clear the neighbors driveway. Fun!

We're looking at 10" over the weekend. My neighbor and I already figured out the schedule of who gets to clean it all off by halftimes so we can both catch the football games, for the most part.

The snowblower sits outside and we have defined the times for who does what.

All set!

, well, the Snowmageddon in my 'hood was a mizzerable failure.

, barely dusted to white, and melting away.

The neighbor lady across the street was worried yesterday about being able to get to the store if it was bad.

I pointed to my 4x4 that I had just mounted studs on all 4 corners, "I'll get you there"

She was relieved.

In my area of Bremerton, I got about 2-1/2 inches of snow. I went out about 8 am and plowed out our combined neighbors driveway with my tractor. It is a short uphill drive. I could get out with my truck, but my neighbors have minis and are afraid of driving. But, I just wanted to play with my tractor! It was raining by the time I was done. I went out at noon and all the streets were bare and wet. My street is dead end and I am at the end. Still a lot of slush.

Well, the dumbass wearing a baseball cap instead of my leather outer coyote fur lined cap with ear flaps is at fault on that one.

But, when a hydrant freezes and the cattle have no water in really cold weather, you can't be slow on the fix. They need lots of water when it's cold.

Solenoid burned out on the well head. Fix that, run hoses to working hydrants and torch the frozen hydrant pipe until I get a drip going. Wait until Sunday when the temp gets to 32. It should flow fine by then.

It's your storm hitting us now. You can have it back if you like. They keep upping the totals with Sunday being heart attack snow.

It's not a matter of win. It's where I want to live. It is not here.

This is a great place; don't get me wrong. I just can't do it anymore. Northern rural living is fantastic until you creep towards your 50's. Then it gets harder.

I don't have to work.

I like to work. That's the only constraint.

I want to keep working and innovating, and witnessing other innovate.

It's fun. Work is really important to me.

Sorta crazy maybe but it's my favorite thing to do.

Yesterday it was mid 40's with rain/snow mix off and on all day. This morning it was 5. All that slushy crap from yesterday froze up good and solid. Getting into my car was challenging, had to scrape everything then pry doors open.

Costco gas card for window scraper?

Over the years living in CO I have used everything you can imagine to scrape windows.

A couple years ago my wife went to San Diego to help her mom after surgery. She was there a couple months. The day she flew back I went down to get her. The heater motor in the car quit working. It was -14. We drove home, 2.5 hours, scraping the inside of the windshield in order to see. She was not amused.

I'll be their slave for 5 out of those 9 days, but I'll eat good food and play some golf if my hands hold up.

A former mentor/co-worker lives there too and she's fun to catch up with, even though she's a turbo-left political person. But she respects it when I tell her I don't want to discuss.

Yeah, I've been doing the Manhattan thing on his birthday for about a decade now.

I have a Scotch.

It's major Father/son time to chat about things that wouldn't be cordial at home or on the phone.

In other words, bullshitting. He gives me shit and I give it right back...We rate the waitresses. Just be dirty old guys for a bit.

We split an appetizer.

Pigs for an hour. It's only one hour a year and it's pretty much a how wrong can you be/how hard can you make the other laugh, whether out of funny or discomfort.

He always wins the discomfort because he brings up my childhood...And I have no dirt on him except for one story from his childhood but I make him tell it.

It's always the same but it's a funny story involving a big boob, a forehead, a mentally challenged guy and a metal tipped dart in Flint, MI.

La Paloma is very cool. I used to play that but the Good Shepherd is dead now. Ventana Canyon, Tucson National, Skyline and Tubac is what I have access to.

They're all neat in their own ways. I don't get to play enough to be good anymore but I can usually pull bogey golf out of my ass.

And golfing around Christmas is special to a northern guy. Dad rides in the cart and gives bad advice.

"You're aiming too far right."

"Dad, I'm going to try and draw it in so I don't have to play out jumping cholla if I hit it bad."

"It would be more fun if you hit it out of the cholla."

It precipitated all but two days in each of February and March. We should apply for protected marshland status.

March land here has been lovely (discounting the tornados touching down).

I went to the beach Easter Sunday, was in the 80's. :D

I'm just sick of mowing grass. Who the hell thought grass lawns were a good idea? A Monoculture you have to maintain? It doesn't even look that cool.

I like the cottage a lot better. It's just woods and beach. We should do native species. Once established, you don't have to do anything.

No water. No weeding. No mowing. Maybe a burn in the fall or spring but that's fun.

Mowing a clear lawn - no trees or other shit on it can allow you to achieve almost a Zen-like state.

It's a similar mental state to varnishing.

My neighbors are probably all pissed at me because my lawn is going native. I have about 7 different kinds of wildflowers sprouting out of it currently. I think it's pretty and I just hate putting chemicals into the soil. We hear how the bees are all dying, we nod our heads and say, "how sad", then spray shit on the lawn that poisons their food. Yeah!

I often wonder how other countries struggling to eat must think of us being so anal about cultivating something with such diligence that serves no purpose other than self satisfaction and being an alternative to concrete!

It is nice to walk on barefoot, unless you live in Florida.

Forecast is looking up!

3 days out of the next 15 have less than a 50% chance of rain (the others have more) and those 3 days might even hit 60 degrees!!

WooHoo!!!

I'm telling you people, stay away!!!

We've had thunderstorms all day. Too much rain in the last month. My phone dings off for flood warnings almost daily.

You guys are famous for rain.

Let me know if you need some to keep the guise up. I'll see what I can do.

The great thing about Seattle in the Spring is more hours of daylight to watch it rain.

That's okay, just don't do the same chart for August.

That came up in response to a post of mine a while back. There are lots of places that get more rain than here but they get much heavier rain for many fewer days.

New Orleans and Miami get tropical storms that can drop a foot of rain in a day. Seattle gets 6,000 hours of drizzle.
