      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Watched race 3; highly recommended.

These (25) are all famous sailors, yet some of them make fundamental mistakes.

At the start

Some of them are just way too far off the line at the 1-minute mark

Grael is on the wrong side of the committee boat

At the windward mark.

The first few round nicely, but then it's total mayhem. One boat hits the mark (may not have recognized the current), tries to re-round but hits another boat and hits the mark a second time.

Ouch!!

Sorry; that was race 7 (Day 3).

Torben Grael great pin end start in race 8.

More mayhem at the top mark due to current and not much wind

Final

Rohart/Ponson (Fra)

Scheidt/Boening (Bra)

Mandelblatt/Fatih (USA)

Negri/Lambertenghi (Ita)

Excellent start for all four; should be exciting...

https://livestream.com/starsailorsleague/sslfinals2016

Scheidt first around the windward mark. With his downwind excellence, the race for first may be over...

WRONG! Mandelblatt overtook the French and then Scheidt as well.

Very close rounding through the gate, USA going right, Brazil going left

The second upwind leg is getting tighter; the French have joined the fight for first.

And the French are first around the mark!

USA second and Brazil third.

Mandelblatt and Scheidt are faster downwind (usually). Should be exciting.

Dash for the Cash! (stolen from Paul Cayard)

It looks like USA (on the right looking downwind) has overtaken France. But Brazil is still close.

Mandelblatt/Fatih win it.

Rohart/Ponson second and Scheidt/Boening third.

Amazing race.

Very impressed with the whole production!

Man, can Scheidt work that boat downwind.

Year before he got into Stars I was talking shop on the dock with some seasoned Star sailors at Cottage Park YC in Winthrop, MA.

Being a Laser sailor I mentioned to them that Robert S. was going to be racing Stars. Said he was the downwind Wizard in small boats but this was met with a couple "...well, they all say that....yadda, yadda."

Left town shortly afterwards and always wanted to head back to CPYC and ask them how Robert did in Stars. Lol!

Best part of this coverage is the bonus of the Island Sloop racing after the Star were done. Watched Taylor Canfield and his crew swamp and sink a Class C sloop. Commentators were cracking up!

Also showed a nice clip of the swimming pigs out in the Exumas.

How did the results change since the live coverage? Live showed Goodison and Scheidt both at 6 points after two races and now the results are showing Scheidt 5 and Goodison 7 points. The change seems to be places 2 and 3 reversed in the first race. How did that happen?

Here is the finish of the first race: https://youtu.be/CkjUXhBvkKE?t=4080

And here the scores after two races in the live: https://youtu.be/CkjUXhBvkKE?t=7742

Did we see just the GPS based results, which were corrected later? There are other minor changes as well (e.g. Buhl Olezza in the first race).

Assuming the live results we see are GPS based. Final results are probably from the RC

The in-boat cameras are great!  They really show that rocking well.

Glad we get to see four races today.

Let's go Rohart/Ponsot!

Yeah although I would prefer if they were  placed above the transom facing forward. Unfortunately not very practical. Also quite hard to follow the windshifts, but it will probably get better in the final with fewer boats. Also they do not have the AC budgets of course

my prediction for top 10 (in no particular order)

mendleblatt / fatih - olympic team using their olympic boat

scheidt / boening - they have a good boat; and its robert scheidt

negri / lambertenghi - have sailed together for years and are fast in all conditions

buhl / koy - using the same boat that polgar & koy campaigned in, plus laser sailors seem to do well in the star when paired with a good crew

goodison / kleen - using a boat that kleen sails on a lot. also frida has been helping develop Fritz sails on lake garda for a few seasons now; he knows what to look for in set up and getting goodison comfortable with the boat.

kuszinerewicz / zycki - olympic team and seem to have always done well in the finals

cayard / trinter - athens olympic team, good boat which paul has been using since 2016 and trinter has been sailing on boats from the same mould.

loof / prada - multiple olympic medals and world championships (in the star) between these two.

last two are tough to call. if it is light for the next few races szabo/natucci will definitely be in there, otherwise i'm guessing it will be between:

saxton/mitchell, rohart/ponsot (although rohart doesnt think he will make it), olezza/englehard, grael/goncalves & melleby/revkin.

After watching half of the first race I really wanted to see the start.  In a tight one design thats the good shit.

Nope.  Half animated crapola, half the commentator telling us whats happening from the RC boat with no video of it.  Fack!
