      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

The January Three-Bridge Fiasco race. When I pulled the spinnaker out of the bag I discovered that a mouse had turned parts of the sail into a nest. So, we switched over to the telescoping whisker pole and went wing-and-wing.

Last night, after removing half a foot of snow - the mighty Cal 20 (and classic sea foam-coloured Sportyak)is ready to go!

 

If all goes according to plan, she'll be the smallest boat ever to winter over in the Northwest Passage. :-)

1981 Sonoma 30 - by Carl Schumacher, the crew aboard on the way to winning one of the last Pearl Harbor return races held, back in '99 or so - you can't sail past the Arizona Memorial anymore because of the new bridge and security, but we kicked ass that weekend.

Unfortunately I no longer own this boat, but had a quite a nice decade with it up until last spring. Santana 23 (the version with the daggerboard and most of the ballast molded into the hull) #130 has now retired to a calm lake. This pic was coming in from a race where the wind built to 30+ then fortunately started dropping.

Proof that I have no dignity: sailing an AMF Puffer. Actually it's quite a nice little boat if you invest some time (and a small amount of epoxy & new-ish gear) in it. It's good for singlehanding, roomy enough for two, plus a couple of beers, and if you're not going more than a mile from the dock anyway, it's easy to paddle home.

This is a very cool thread. The Hinckley SW 42 was the first boat I dreamed about as a kid. It's still one of my favorite designs.

 

I'm pretty sure my boat is a bit smaller than average.

Too slow to edit/ add anything. We're all so used to drone pics now we forget how hard it was to get a good aerial photo.That's our new old boat ( for the last 8 years or so). Riada, Laurie Davidson design 1974. Photo taken from the police helicopter in about 08 or so , Coastal Classic.

This is our old old boat ( first 25 years) Waione , 1907 Bailey.The photo was taken by Terry Fong AFA photography in 2000. It was a 40 knot day and they were up in a small Robinson, pilot a Vietnam vet. I know it because I asked the question ' what the heck were you doing up in that on a day like that?'

So on a smaller scale, I bought a Victoria class RC yacht at Goodwill a few years ago. I finally got it tricked out and sailing a couple weeks ago.

Victoria's are platic 31 inch yachts. There is a fairly active association and lots of go fast ideas online.

So a friend came forward and said that she had two more Victorias and a Northwind 36 also still in the box. So now the kitchen shipyard is working overtime.

No, I ended up buying about a dozen of the magazines. I was going to frame that cover, but never got around to it. I think I still have some of the magazines somewhere...

That Ranger 33 has a really nice look to her.

 

She's a keeper. The boat saw very little use through all three previous owners and hardly sailed at all. Step below and she's like a brand new boat. Only two small gelcoat crazing cracks on the deck, one in the cockpit(where the prevoius 300 lb owner always first stepped aboard) the other next to the port lowers chainplate. The previous owner to the last, had the Atomic 4 longblocked at 800 hrs (I have the receipts), for no reason other then he thought an engine that old should need rebuilding. The engine had 100 hrs since the rebuild for a total of 900 hrs on it when we got it and now has 987 hrs.

 

The owner we acquired it from had a new heat exchanger and reservoir installed, however they forgot to fill the exchanger with anti-freeze. The owner started her up, she started to overheat and shut her down. He checked the reservoir and heat exchanger and found neither had anti-freeze, and thought the head had cracked. First thing I did was pull the dip stick, it had clean oil with no sign of water. We filled the heat exchanger and the reservoir 1/4 full, charged the batteries, but wouldn't start. So took the carb off, disassembled it, cleaned it thoroughly and reassembled it. My son and I then installed new plugs and plug wires, coil wire, a new coil, new points, condensor, rotor and cap, new fuel filter, new choke cable, new impellers in the water pump and the secondary pump - crossed our fingers and she started right up. Ran it for a while, inspecting everything and has run like a top since.

 

I could show pics of all our previos boats, including two more Rangers, a Columbia 38, a CT 41 and others. However there was only one boat, I bought in '77, I regretted selling to a friend in the 80s. It was the last and 35th Gig Harbor T-Bird built by Ed Hoppen's boatbuilding crew, Herb Schuey and Phil Manley, for his son at Eddon Boat Company.

My two eldest children Kristy, Jason and I waiting for the flood after a bottom scrub the fall of '77. The next summer I built a new high aspect class legal rudder, and installed it. Earlier the summer of '77, I had repainted the topside white, from international orange, but had yet to paint the name and homeport.

Me too, Will, though it was the Bermuda 40 for me. Sou'wester 42 is kind of the "new" version. Only boat I've ever owned, wanted, probably I'll ever have.

Our first boat in the family was my dad'sT-Bird. His had a small pate in the cockpit that that said made in japan. I assume that tidal grid was at Shilshole, the same place my dad would scrape the bottom and try to get it painted before the water came in back when nobody cared about all the crap and old paint you scraped into the sound. Thanks for sharing that photo.

Your welcome! There were a few Japanese built T-Birds in the NW back in the day. They had a build plaque either in the cockpit or in the cabin. There was a professional built Japanese built T-Bird in the Port of Poulsbo, that sailed over from Japan on her own bottom. I checked it out when looking at T-Birds to buy in '76, it was very well built, but the owner wanted twice what 60s woodies were going for in the NW at the time.

 

That's the grid at the Port of Kingston. You were allowed could scrub your bottom, before painting, but no scrapping or sanding off paint was allowed. Those rules were strictly enforced by Dick Hill the harbor master. The boat had to be hauled out for any scrapping and sanding. It's possible some may have scrapped and sanded after hours, but I never witnessed such activities, nor ever saw telltale signs of scrapped off paint. The Port changed the rules when ablative paints became common, which banned scrubbing or painting on the grid. Then the grid was only used for inspection and changing zincs.

My old boat, Oday 240. Taken from bridge over Adams Creek, near Beaufort, NC, after 2 month trip up ICW from Florida Keys.

 

...Yes, that is a mainsail from a Lightning LOL. I had just finished university and had 6 months between graduating and starting my real job... so I had pretty much NO money. :)

So on a smaller scale, I bought a Victoria class RC yacht at Goodwill a few years ago. I finally got it tricked out and sailing a couple weeks ago.

Victoria's are platic 31 inch yachts. There is a fairly active association and lots of go fast ideas online.

So a friend came forward and said that she had two more Victorias and a Northwind 36 also still in the box. So now the kitchen shipyard is working overtime.

I wandered into a hobby shop about 20 years ago and bought a Kyosho Fairwind. The old electronics died and a couple of years ago I replaced them.

 

No one else sails one around here. Apparently, I have to get a Soling if I want to race with the cool kids.

 

So I use mine for things like harassing otters.

The T-bird is a great looking boat. It kind of bridges the aesthetic between power and sail and would good in either form.

 

 

I'vr never heard that before. It's a great sailboat in all of it's forms.

How do you get on with that big staysail? Do you have permanently rigged outside sheets for when you crack off?

Hi she is a Heard28 built to my spec launched in 2002. Glass hull, the rest teak. Same as the working boats on the Fal in Cornwall...they dredge for oysters under sail, no motors allowed.

The big staysail needs lazy sheets for use outside of the shrouds. I now use a smaller staysail and the boat sails just as well as before.

The photos were taken by Classic Boat Magazine in 2004, it was blowing hard but we kept full sail for the photos.

Here she is in calmer times but still with the larger staysail.
