      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Local news here in Alabama is that Auburn ex coach Tommy Tuberville is considering running for Governor of Alabama. See what Trump and Jeff Sessions have started!

Obviously, he would get the War Eagle vote, but enough to beat Bentley? Could a jar of plum pudding beat Bentley?

Bentley is a laughing stock. Have you followed his lame attempted seduction of his staffer? If this state wasn't so bogged down they would have impeached Bentley months ago. Barkley could beat Bentley. Not sure the War Eagle vote would work without the Tuscaloosa vote as well.

Pretty sad that these guys have nothing but football going for them. I believe the counselor's most used line, (except for do you have a pencil) is "if you're not playing football, what are you going to do?" And none of them had an answer.

Nick Saban, gutless wonder...

Quote

"First of all, we have every respect for the police and what they did, so in no way are my comments directed at anything but total respect for those people doing their job," Saban said Thursday via 247Sports. "Da'Shawn put himself in a bad situation. Obviously he made a mistake being where he was at the time. But the fact that he didn't drive the car, aight, which is what we tell the players not to do. It's not OK that he was drinking, with me, and that's a behavioral issue that needs to be addressed and we will address it.

"But the fact that he didn't drive the car and wasn't driving the car, he did not put other people at risk, which to me is the most significant thing when you drive under the influence. But he didn't drive. But they have every right to do what they did.

"... I have two choices. I can punish the guy for putting himself in a bad situation, aight, but making a pretty good decision after he put himself in that situation. Or we can take the situation that he put himself in, which is drinking, aight, and have him assessed for that and try to help him so he can make better choices and decisions in the future."

Hand is one of the key returning players on Alabama's defense for 2017. He played in all 15 games last season and recorded 21 tackles, five quarterback hurries and a pair of sacks. He was also a preseason All-SEC selection by the media earlier this month.

Alabama opens the 2017 season against Florida State in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta.

Saban you're a dumb fuck , how do you think he got to that parking lot?  keys still in the ignition..   SEC honchos need to step in and suspend.. you don't think that Saban is thinking about that last sentence do ya?

I recall Bobby Bowden's approach, with the National Championship game approaching.  Sebastian Janikowski got busted for possession of GHB.  He was sitting in the passenger seat of a car in a parking lot, and held up a vial of liquid to look at it.  The undercover cop in the car next to his looked at it too, got out of his car and flashed his badge.  Janikowski poured it on the floor of the car and got busted.  Of course, he was the star kicker, now with the Raiders.  Two other guys got into trouble before the game, but they were bench warmers.

Guess who got suspended for the game?  The benchwarmers.  Bowden's response to questions about it?  "This is not a democracy."

"Players are smart. When the game is over, they walk through the parking lot. When the tailgate is over, they may have $400-$500 before they get out of there. Players are smart. They may have scored a big touchdown or won a big game. There ain't no question they're getting something on the way. [A booster] is going to go downtown and say, 'I just gave so and so $50 for dinner.' ... I guarantee [that sort of thing] is going to happen at Ole Miss and Alabama and Mississippi State and Tennessee and Texas probably and Oklahoma -- for sure."

I can't comment on the accuracy of that, but from what I remember from the Saban students at Bama who were in my classes, that probably didn't happen. Right after a game, win or lose, Saban had them work with their tutors and cohorts to deal with classes so that academics wouldn't get in the way of practice during the week. As far as I know, few of any of them were given the latitude to roam around the tailgates. Maybe the high performing students could have roamed the tailgates (one of his linebackers was one of the best engineering physics students I ever had) but those seem unlikely to have broken the rules by pocketing money.

That wasn't too long after the textbook scandal though, so they were probably extra careful, it might be different now.

I posted that with a grain of salt,  I don't know of any program, where the players had the energy to roam around the tailgaters.. most of the time it's , locker room, change, interviews, bus back to the athletic facilities, whirpools etc..

The UW Huskies are ranked #8 in the first preseason poll. Good spot to be in. They have the people to go all the way this year. Despite some key Seniors moving on. They are going to have their hands full against USC but otherwise are going to be pretty dominant this year.

Four.  Don't forget Kadarious Toney.  They haven't had an athlete like him since Harvin.

Look at all those quarterbacks, Michigan!  There's no telling who is gonna be playing next weekend.  I'm guessing that a front runner won't set himself apart until just after the kickoff next Saturday.  The big question is whether they will have any receivers left to take the field, once the cloud clears....

The pre-hype is getting entertaining, with Harbaugh refusing to release a roster until August 30, and the sound bites from McElwain.  Hopefully it is a good game, definitely a benchmark for both teams.

I don't know which one Florida is starting at QB, but Franks is going to be the one getting the playing time.  He has a better arm than the other pro-style  QB, del Rio.  Del Rio had his shot last year and was not impressive.  Zaire?  He couldn't get it done at ND, when the Irish were down.  I can see them using him like Meyer played Tim Tebow in his freshman year, when Chris Leak took them to the title; a few plays here and there, to switch things up.

There is no way that the Gators are going to do anything to narrow down the preparation all of those new Michigan defenders have to do, by announcing a starter before game time.  Mac needs to show that he can win a big game, but I'm not sure this is the one.  Anything can happen, but with it being the first game of the year, I think the odds of a blowout are pretty good, I just have no idea which team will blow.

Starting RB suspended.  Ten players total, including the star receiver and the leading rusher from a year ago.

No argument.  It won't sit well with the more rabid fans, but it sends the right message. I wish Michigan would have suspended Grant Perry for the year.

Fear not. Gators are still going to pin Michigan's ears back in the battle of the rebuilt teams.

I had to laugh at the Florida QB controversy. One guy had that job throughout the spring. The kid has an arm and he's tall enough to see over any line.

Anyone that says that they have any idea of what is going to happen in the first game of the year between two teams that should be pretty good, is full of crap.  OSU and Indiana?  Yeah, Indiana is going to score early, before losing by 3 or 4 touchdowns.  Alabama/FSU?  They'll both play well but that could go either way.  Florida/Michigan?  We don't even know if either team belongs in the rankings, given all the new players, let alone which one will win.

Exactly. Both teams have talent, but huge question marks. That is why I laugh at preseason polls, they are just popularity contests.

That was the best opening weekend I can remember!

Ga. Tech beat the shit out of Tennessee but snatched defeat from jaws of victory.  Sad.  Had the ball for 41 minutes and rushed for 600 yards.  With those stats you should win the game 995 times out of a thousand.

Everybody hop on the Jake Fromm bandwagon while it's still early.  ND is a touchdown favorite, take the Dawgs.

I'm a little late to the party, but that U of M / Florida game was a perfect example of how to not play offense.  Speight looked just like he did last year - a couple nice passes with a couple really really bad ones.  Not looking good for the rest of Michigan's season.

Their line play on either side of the ball won that game.  Holy crap.  I'm not sure if their lines were that good or Florida's were that bad....  We've heard all summer that the Gators' offensive line was improved, after years of mediocrity.  They looked like they didn't want to be there.  I've never seen anything like it, in 40 years of watching that team.

Some feathers for Pitt:

Last year Pitt beat every team that has beaten  this week's  top two ranked teams since the end of the 2015 season.

Last year Pitt beat the teams currently ranked # 3  and # 4

Or

Pitt either beat or beat whoever beat each of the top four teams

********

i suspect that will end this weekend but there is a reason the games are played.

Ole Miss goes before the NCAA infractions committee Monday defending itself in an alleged wide-ranging, cash-soaked, humiliating scandal that threatens to bring the football program to its knees.

And there's every possibility that's not what we'll remember most about the case.

Not after reading the transcript of one Leo Lewis, the Mississippi State player who was given limited immunity by the NCAA in exchange for information regarding Ole Miss.

SB Nation did a fine job reporting the contents of Lewis' testimony to the NCAA a couple of weeks ago, but it may have buried the lead.

Within the piece, Lewis' mother Tina Henderson told a former Ole Miss assistant that LSU had offered $650,000 for the services of her son.

If even close to the truth, that amount of money changes everything we know about cheating in college athletics. If even close to the truth, this case isn't so much about Ole Miss cheating but the lengths any wrongdoer would be willing to go.

And there is reason to believe $650,000 is close to the truth. I checked with the story's author, Steven Godfrey, and he said confirmed the figure wasn't a typo on his part or the person transcribing the testimony.

More than that, there is anecdotal and factual evidence of sizable six-figure payouts.

The father of former Texas A&M wide receiver Ricky Seals-Jones said he was offered $600,000 for the services of his son. That shocking information came from the fine reporting by authors Armen Keteyian and Jeff Benedict in their 2013 book "The System: The Glory and Scandal of Big Time Football." One SEC and one ACC school, the father said, offered to double the offer the other school made for Seals-Jones.

While Auburn and Cam Newton were never found guilty of any wrongdoing, the number thrown around to get the services of young Cam was $180,000.

Think back to the Logan Young/Albert Means scandal at Alabama. Young was possibly the only booster to commit a federal crime in trying to land a recruit. The late Alabama loyalist allegedly paid $150,000 for the services of Memphis blue-chip lineman Albert Means. Young was convicted of money laundering and racketeering. He was permanently disassociated from the program by Alabama and died in 2006.

The NCAA is going to do what it's going to do with Ole Miss, but there apparently is a culture out there that can't be slowed with the removal of a few scholarships.

I made some calls to see if $650,000 was even possible in this day and age. I was told that was absolutely the case by a former college assistant who went into detail.

Today, he said, the offers can include a possible redshirt year in case the player is injured. So, now we're supposedly talking about an annual "salary" of $130,000 for five years. That works out to a monthly stipend of almost $11,000.

But how do schools/cheaters/boosters afford it? An anecdote shared from the late 1990s can help answer that question:

A coach called on several monied boosters each year, assembling all of them in a room. That coach then instructed the boosters which games to bet on, based on the coach's belief his team could cover the spread. If the bets hit, viola! -- a stash of cash to buy players.

After Michigan and Irma, I suspect that Florida is going to be ready to take out some frustrations on Tennessee. If they don't, there will be some fans unleashing frustrations on Nussmeyer and Mac, not necessarily in that order.

OK State and OK beatdown of PITT and Ohio State  might indicate the Big Eight is a little better this year.

As  Pitt gave PSU a pretty good contest last week, the mighty BIG looks s little kess formidable as well.

Michigan did pound Florida but Florida hasn't been worth a shit since the Sandusky sanctions were put in place

Is anyone else watching this disaster of a FU/Tenn game?  This game is going to become a meme for poorly played football

Today's polls are nuts. How can a voter put USC in the top five and not consider Texas worthy of a vote.

Even as  a "Texas Sucks and I love to see them lose" guy, I would drop them at 15 this week and make another adjustment after the OU game.

Texas didn't even get an "others receiving  votes." That is nuts.

I doubt there is a coach in the country who wants to see Texas face his team right now. They have hired as good of players as any of the srmi pro college teams and Herman seems like a capable supervisor.

Wish I could have seen it but it got out-prioritized. Sounds like the last nine seconds was all I needed to see.

Were you watching a different game than I watched?  Besides the eternal Texas Sucks motif, they did not want to win.  WTF was the play at the end of the first half? No way SC should have scored, much less a 50+ yarder.  Then at the end of regulation, when Texas finally stumbles their way into the lead, they let, I mean LET SC go the entire length of the field in less than a minute to score a tie, and then completely fubar'd the OT.

Is that the same Texas Shorthorns you describe above?  Cuz if it is your definition of worthy and mine do not collide.  OU and OSU will hang half a century on them, and then put their 2nd team in for the second half.

I sure hope you are correct aboutbtge next few weeks.

i saw a team give USC all they could handle at USCs home field.

USC kept doing the same stupid running plays over and over but I didn't see much difference between the two teams that day.

Maryland got Texas on its first game with the new coach.

We shall see very soon whether Texas played over its head or the new coach is organizing his very talented horses

i am not betting against them any time soon

Western Michigan University gave USC all they could handle. I am surprised that USC didn't drop in the polls after those weak wins.

I think that's more the case...SC just isn't very good.  Not real sure how good most of the P12 is.  But SC has had their struggles in the first coupla outings...certainly not top 5 material. Actually pretty amazed the coaches poll only dropped them 1.  I guess it's just their winning streak has some beef to it.  But one thing, Darnold looks like he'll be playing Sundays for sure.  Dude is pretty good outside of the pocket.

They worked their way back after kicking Stanford's ass.  Based on the Trees being handled by San Jose St last week, that win over Stanford might not mean as much as folks thought it did.

Penn State was up by two points after scoring a touchdown as time expired. They had to snap the ball on the conversion attempt. The quarterback could have taken a knee and ended the game. The quarterback punted the ball.

I do not know the answer or I would not be posting it.

If the ball didn't make it out of bounds couldn't an Iowa player pick up the punted ball and try to run for a two point conversion of his own??

I was surprised nobody at least chased after the ball to try.

i couldn't tell if the ball gad gone out of bounds

certainly if the punt has been blocked it could have been run back for two points.

It seems to be punting was very very stupid
