      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Charelston Race Week- Weather and Team Gear

Recommended Posts

Charleston Race Week is right around the corner. We are doing weather for some of the teams in the event and will post a broad brush forecast here. It is not too late to get your team some sweet team swag and if you order pretty quick, you can get it with cheap freight too. We have shirts, shorts, bags, hats, hoodies and more.

Click here for the team shirts and click here if you also need some ideas for your team's gear.

We don't just re-brand some other company's shirts. We make the Pro-Tech shirts with YOUR TEAM in mind from the start with no one elses logo on the chest but yours.... and we make them right here in the USA.

Are PHRF Boats racing outside to be timed/scored by ORC?

Boats that are racing on Course 5 offshore will be scored under ORC, except for the J/105 entries, which will be racing as one-designs. Boats entered in the Pursuit Classes will be scored under PHRF.

No and no-

If by attendance sure, it's got more boats but it's not remotely close to being in kw for a week or two or three...

It's generally cold, water is brown, launching and retrieving is a pita. And...it's not a week, a a weekend-

Two completely different animals- each has their merits- I do both every year, and have a good time at each venue

Long range forecasts are suggesting that the unsettled weather for the Southeast will return on Friday afternoon evening the 21st. That is really beyond the reliable forecast horizon so take it with a grain of salt but an active pattern over the Pacific should send impulses diving into the region and this time of year that can make for some pretty violent weather as we have seen the past few days in the SE and mid Atlantic. More later as the tea leaves arrange.

Sail Racer

Are you coming down this year? Didn't see your usual ride on the scratch sheet.

Not sure I am buying the current 80 degrees and sunny for Friday that is being widely advertised by the long range models. But you never know...might happen. 7 to 11 knots looks to be the rule if the forecast is right straight on through Sunday. Hope that changes to a tad more breeze.

Bump for updates

What a difference a day makes. The forecast models are still in a fair amount of disagreement even with the placement and intensity of the macro features. There appears to be enough instability Friday through Sunday for moderate to severe Thunderstorms each afternoon. If you prefer the ECMWF model then Sunday could be quite interesting with a compact but vigorous low in the vicinity. Could be on the "stormy" side if this comes to fruition for the final day of racing. You can throw out the previous prognostication of little wind on Sunday of the models are correct. The GFS by the way is much slower and does not develop a low in the coastal SC region. NWS Charleston is looking at Wednesday as part of the "LONG TERM" forecast so even the local boys are hedging their bets on next weekend.

More later as the tea leaves arrange but pack your bags with a variety of sailing gear. One theme is in place in all of the models and that is warmer than average with highs about 80'F and plenty of humidity. Ideal conditions for the development of popcorn T-Storms.

Hard to get excited about paying almost $500 to race PHRF/pursuit or even ORC/offshore against all the boats we race against on a regular basis.

Glad we're out this year.

I'm in with our new to us J105, Ruckus. I know, I Know but at least we'll have our own start. Weather still looks up in the air. Hopefully Mark will chime in with an updated forecast.Shameless plug, we just got some great shirts for the boat from Mark.

Matt: Thank you again for the order. I thought your shirts looked great as well. The weather is looking better. Sunny on Friday until two in the afternoon with nice breeze. Slight chance of rain later in the day. Saturday and Sunday are mostly cloudy. If they let you sail past 230PM on Sunday it could get damp. Looks fun regardless. Stay aboard. Stay out of THE ROOM and enjoy at least one Dark and Stormy for me.

EDIT: Yes, this was edited. I should have waited 20 more minutes to get the latest model runs.

It definitely looked like fun conditions. Good turnout and the parties also looked like a blast. Well done CRW crew!

Mark, your forecast was spot on.

Finishing seconds between boats after 16 or 18mi race is a cool type of racing.

We had a great time! Some, are still there waiting for Salty Mikes to open..

Sail Safe!
