      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

It's gone...

The Default configuration is to allow anyone to create their own Titles. We declined to do that in the past, and there was a brief window when that default option was in place.

Now it's removed.

I'm of the opinion that as a nod to those with a ridiculous amount of posts, we put a stupidly high threshold to where that feature kicks in. I don't know if it's worth bothering though.

I believe in the past we figured it was just another area for some people to put up obnoxious crap we'd have to moderate...

Check this new feature out. The question is, is it worth using so we can help the newbs out?

The freaking A/C forums could use it, it's like reading a US govt operations memo trying to follow some of those threads.

I give you...Acronym Expansion. Just playing with it so far, so HTFU if we decide to take it away.

I'm not sure it will work properly with the DTS headlines though.

Thank you BJ for all the work you are putting in here.

Can we change the posts per change, maybe make it user changeable?

The Random picture thread on my cell connection is unusable.

Can't edit what subforums I see in "new content", instead I have to make a custom activity stream that is buried in the UI.

[fixed, thanks!] Activity steam doesn't show stars for threads that I've contributed to.

Activity steam shows me the preview of the latest post instead of the one that is first unread.

I lived in sa forums out of "new content", so these are major takebacks.

I tend to agree that the screwed the blue pooch eliminating the old "New Content" in favor of the new Unread content/streams thing.

I'm still looking into alternatives for that.

Aha. I've looked around for a customs posts/page setting. I couldn't find one in the system configs OR the user preferences. On my "to look" list.

One thing I am finding, is that many things have plugins or add-ins to supply fixes for missing/changed functionality, like the Post number thing. That was a quick and easy fix. There may be a few other ones we find.

I'm not able to create a new topic in Fix It Anarchy.  When I tried to create one, I was shown a screen with the title and the tags.  I entered the title and a tag, but when I submitted it, I got an error screen that said I hadn't filled in something.  There is nothing I can click on to fill in, however.  Same in both FF and Chrome.

No, you preview, then have to click the 'X' to "return to edit" which puts you back in the editor. It's more like Print Preview in Word, where you can't edit there.

See, this is why we need at least some nested quotes.

Oooh...look what I did!

To nest quotes, you can select the quote you want to nest AND the new quote. Hover the mouse over the selection (don't include the nested quote header) and a "Quote This" option pops up.

Click it, and Voila! A nested quote.

In a way, it may be smarter. Default, no nesting to keep things clean. But give you the option to do it intentionally if you need it.

With practice it will probably be easier. I will play with some deeper nesting.

So how many times can I nest this?

COOL!

How does this work on a phone????

There's a property under the "Posting" setting to "Expand Acronyms".

So I can define a list of Acronyms, and they will automatically get tagged like this as the post is created. It doesn't seem to work retroactively, so HTFU in older posts will not show the mouse over help.

It's on the Admin stuff - you can't get to it.

The new software seems faster, which I like.

I dislike 4 things about the editor:

  1. Nested quotes gone. They could be overdone, but they were often v useful
  2. Post numbering was really useful.  Please bring it back!
  3. Raw editing is v helpful. I don't mind whether it is BB code or HTML, but please give us the option to use it

Hey, boss.

There will be a learning curve on the user side, no problem there.

On the user name thing, though,  it seems needless to hold us to a once-in-30-day name change just for the present, given that many of our names were just changed on our behalf without permission by the software.  I don't hold the board owners or the moderatoors responsible, please understand that;  just the same, given that "I" didn't make a name change three days ago, I'd like to suggest that this time limit be adjusted to, say, one name change per day for a limited period.  Make this condition last for a few days only, so we can put up the names by which we are known.

Is this possible?

WIth appreciation,

Apologies if this issue has already been raised.

For a short period, the forum was displaying my user name instead of my display name.  I did not alter my Display Name in the profile (had not touched profile in years).  I did go into the profile to change it back to WoobaGooba, but the sw would not allow that as it said I had changed the Display Name within the last 30 days (which I had not).

This may have been related to login using the user name but same password.  I am not sure.  The issue seems to have self corrected.

Weird.

With the update, I now get a popup notification on EVERY view, that says the site wants to send me notifications (Windows 10 Pro, yeah, yeah, but we are stuck with it at work).  I don't really need to know what is going on when I am not on the site.  I don't have notifications enabled on Windows and don't really want to just for this site.

In the SA profile settings, I turned off all notifications except that "Profile, Someone posts on my profile," the ability to toggle on/off is disabled by the administrator.  I don't know the purpose of this, but can this be changed so it can be turned off as well?

You should have the option to answer that question "NO" in your browser, and have it remember those options.

I'll check into that item. In fourteen years on the boards I think I've had one person post something to my profile, so I don't know if that's a big deal.

No nested quotes? Or is there a secret key?

Nested quotes are possible, discussed above. You have to consciously do it though by selected the quotes you want to nest and hitting "Quote This" instead of automatically nesting everything multiple layers deep.

An improvement in my view. You don't always need to nest every comment in a thread...

There seems to be a global default set, which is presently 100.

As a frequent denizen of places with crap bandwidth, I'd prefer a lower number too.

I think in the old version it was user definable in your profile, I'm not sure it is any more. I can't figure out where to do it.

So if you want to reply to a quote and nest quotes, do NOT hit the "Quote" button. Rather, select the text you want to nest in the original quote and hit "Quote This" when it appears.

Well, if you fuck it up and screw with the attributions, yeah.

But you could always do that in the old forums, too.

I suspect it will be harder to get away with though, since you can now get a notification when when you are quoted. So people will know you did it and come check.

Not also that you can collapse any nest quote for clarity if there are too many for your eyes by clicking the little down-caret next to the quote attribution.

I didn't try and fuck it up, it was automatically done for me. It's going to take a while for this to percolate.

Someone else pointed out that Undo is a system hotkey on every OS.

I can easily add it if people want it, but it's just Ctrl-Z on your Windows PC.

The "Source" button is in the upper left hand corner, next to Bold.

There is an add-in out there that will replace that HTML source with BB Code for editing. I do not know 1) what if costs and 2) if we really want to do that.

On Mac undo is Command-Z.

The "Source" button is removed, can it be returned please? If it was available I could interleave quotes and replies, rather than having to rely on people working out what the reply is to. Inserting replies into quotes using coloured fonts is rubbish as it defeats quote markup.

The BB Code "Source" button is just...gone...from the editor. I agree, I miss it.

There IS a plugin that will return something like it, but it needs to be procured, tested, then installed. I'm not sure if that will happen.

Nesting behaviour seems a little weird, I think it's easy to screwup the thread sequence. But at least I think I can quote reasonably well now.

It is slightly odd, compared to what we are used to. But I like the fact we don't nest everything automatically any more.

HUGE...HUGE find in Activity Streams.

There has been much wailing and gnashing of teeth because "Unread Content" no longer eliminates PA, and is sort of stupid.

On a global level, it IS sort of stupid - I can not find a way to exclude one forum from it.

But here is the cool part. You CAN create your own version it set is as a default for your "Unread/New" stream.

Notice at the top of the screen you have "Browse" and "Activity". Click ACTIVITY.

From there, you can look at "My Activity Streams" which includes the system streams. But you can create a custom stream. Filter by "Topics" and you can then choose Which forums to monitor. From there you can pick whatever you want to see or not see in your stream - so if the AC doesn't excite you any more than PA does, you can turn it off.

When you save the Stream and view it, you have three buttons next to the title. Edit Title, Delete Stream, and Set as Default. If you do that last one, your default "New Topics" button because your custom stream.

Problem of PA fixed on an individual basis...I'm going to write this up more clearly for FAQ Anarchy and pin it there.

Apparently it has something to do with having Admin privileges, I have since learned. You all don't have that option.

That can and should be enabled for the rest of us. That was an option in the older software as well but now that there is no BBC edit then please turn on the html edit.

I agree, we should all have Admin access. Well, anybody over 15000 posts, anyhow.

I could if I would. But it does not seem to support it native, we'd need to install a plugin we do not have.

No nested quotes? Or is there a secret key?

Edit: we seem to be stuck in the numbering sequence, we have two #101 in a row.

Edit edit: disregard. Reloading made it work.

Nested quotes are possible, discussed above. You have to consciously do it though by selected the quotes you want to nest and hitting "Quote This" instead of automatically nesting everything multiple layers deep.

An improvement in my view. You don't always need to nest every comment in a thread...

Yep, I really like this feature!

Is the save as default button only on the desktop version?  I don't see it on mobile. The rest I had discovered and posted about in the old thread, nut save as default would be a nice improvement.

All thought all you phone and tablet users hated nested quotes anyway. I don't have an iPad, so I can't test it for you. But I am guessing if you select the text/quotes in question and hit the Quote button, it might just work.

I'm not sure of the differences with the mobile.

If you try the Save as Default option on your desktop, it would make sense for it to carry over to the mobile.

Yes. I just did this on my iPhone. You have to highlight the quote you want with your finger and drag the selection down to highlight what you want to include. Then when you let go you get the same "quote this" selection as you do with the desktop version.

Love it!  10000x better on mobile for this feature than the old forums.

Edit:  just like with the desktop version, do not hit the "quote" button or you will get just the last reply.  If you want more than one nested quote, highlight the text first and then tap "quote this".

Looks great on mobile, huge improvement. Thanks for not forcing that Tapatalk shit.

[+] Quote button looks quite awkward on desktop. Perhaps move it to the right hand side of the comment block rather than left where it is now.

I suggest limiting signatures to ~5 lines. Having TWO WHOLE VIDEOS or GIFs and empty space like below, of DRIFTW00D's, Is fucking pointless and clogs up the the thread. I'm here to read comments and view relevant content, not scroll over bullshit which takes up half or sometimes all of the screen.

A sig consisting of two whole screenfuls of video is plain disruptive

Too awesome...

for starters... by reading the thread ? and next go to settings

the irony is also that there is this rule on SA that if you out somebody you get banned, like in your case my name was also outed by this software update, so who gets banned ?

And on a related note, I guess the name history showing my original Display Name as Tom Ray is gone. Just to be clear, I don't care if anyone uses my real name. It's never been a secret here and won't be.

Great improvement, but ...

using an iPad, about 4 months ago the site would no longer "remember" me, i.e. I had to login anew every time. After the change, for a couple of days It went back to recognizing me, but then it went back and I have to login again. Any explanation?

Quoting issue:

I use Firefox on a Mac for one reason: I can "drag" any link and it opens in a new tab in the background.

When reading a topic, I'd drag the (reply w/quote) link if I wanted to reply to a post. When done reading the thread, I'd close the tab and any posts to which I wanted to reply were waiting behind it.

Now, when I try that same trick, it just opens the page I was already reading, not a reply window with the post in question quoted. This sucks.

you can hide signatures -- individual ones or in general

click on the little 'x' for signature options up in the top right corner of any signature
