   Land of Not Quite Right ?

Saloon.jpg.db0d30594435b91605f81ddb3faaaa9e.jpg

Established 1885  in Wilkeson

It was the end of the railway, the end of the road,

&  pretty much, the end of the Civilized World at that time

Coal miners, railway workers, loggers, mule skinners,  as well as the Prospectors up in the mountains,

all came here to get a "Cold one"

, and even a "Hot one" .

Ya see,  the Starboard side of the building was  the Saloon.

, and the Portside of the building was the, ,,  umm,,

hmmm,

, the Portside of the building was ,, umm ,, not the Saloon.

It was sorta more like a Hotel.

It was sorta more like a Hotel fer Single Ladies, and Social Club.

Land of Not Quite Right ?

Gentlemen of the Forum,  I submit this is NOT a matter of  "Not Quite Right"

Gentlemen of the Forum,   I submit this IS a matter of

 What in the HELL has gone WRONG with this fair country when a FINE establishment has fallen on such hard times

as to be reduced to a pitiful  ice cream parlor before shuttering the door!

A friend is an accomplished knitter.  She didn't like the stark white food mixer in her kitchen, so she made a cover for it.  Tea-cosy, eat your heart out.

Ah, bunny stew.  A favourite British winter dish in the country.  I miss it.

Along with game pie and shooter's sandwich.  Now that's another whole topic.

From Wikipedia. Sounds awesome!

The shooter's sandwich is a steak sandwich prepared with cooked steak and mushrooms, salt and pepper that is placed inside a hollowed-out long loaf of bread and then weighed down. It originated in England from the Edwardian era, and is similar to the Beef Wellington.

From one of my favourite Youtube channels.

They work well on boats.

The key to the shooter's sandwich is WEIGHT. It really needs to be squashed flat overnight in a cool place (not the fridge), or it doesn't work.  My lovely late Mum used to put it on the stone larder floor then stack a 5 gallon steel milk churn full of water on top of an iron skillet to spread the load.  Added ingredients into the mushroom/shallot mix include Worcestershire sauce, some chopped fresh parsley and a really healthy slosh of port and brandy.  As he says, more steak, less mushroom mix.

And yes, these were the envy of all crew on a day race in the Solent, and especially an overnight offshore.  As a nipper, I used to bring extra slices and would trade them for pints in the Island Sailing Club afterwards, or glasses of Armagnac if we'd finished in France.

This is what it should look like.

I like to think of myself as a budding amateur foodie, but, I'd never heard of this before.  Thanks for squaring me away fellas - I've got a new thing to try!

Ignoring the 'old fart' comment above (quite appropriate, by the way), when you're making this, go easy on the paté.  Just a smear on top of the bottom slice of steak before you put it in the bread.  Otherwise the paté will overpower everything.

My father did shit like that.

He would at least drill a hole the size of the wire and then install the male end, not punch a hole big enough to slip the whole end through.

new W10 screen saver came up today for Matsuzaki in Japan, thought I would use street view to have a little walk around the town and noticed this placemarker/memorial/monument to a boat or sailor:

I am sure that sign above the shop in back says "scientific research" - not "Fish Shop"
