      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Volvo MD7 - Combo Starter / Generator issues

Recommended Posts

My old MD7 runs quite well... once it gets running.

Recently, I had starting problems; swapped batteries, checked the solenoid, first the starter was weak and I could help by pushing the flywheel with my foot to get a start, then it became no-go at the starter (measured voltage at the terminal).  Was able to wrap a rope around the flywheel and get it started (but not after I'd sailed into Benicia, with a very narrow and shallow entrance channel).

The starter is removed, and I'm figuring I'll have to have it rebuilt. I'd appreciate any other troubleshooting or repair ideas.

- It doesn't look like this style starter/generator is used anymore, I've had no luck with a replacement. (they are all car-style now with a bendix/throw out gear). Mine is belt drive - see the photo, the 'dynamo' is above and to the right of the flywheel.

- Anybody have a good rebuilder or shop to recommend in San Diego or SoCal?

Don't know anyone in SoCal, but I bet you could get it rebuilt just fine South of the Border.  And enjoy some great fish tacos while at it.

As long as the windings are OK?  The things that usually wear on those are the commutator, brushes and the bearings.  The commutator can be "cleaned up" several times, new brushes/springs and bearings in the end caps can breathe new life into an old generator.
