      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Yeah I’m on his six and there is maybe another 6 in the close area by the zezo red dots.

thistle was with us for half the leg but seems to have gone searching for MH370 now.

Mom! Does the zezo-Routing calculates with the 4 kt minimum wind speed or with the original GFS forecast? Thx.

Zezo knows the game's minimum windspeed is 4 kts, and routes accordingly.  But the volatility of wind direction in that environment is still going to happen, making the accuracy of Zezo (or any router) very low beyond the first 6-12 hours (and sometimes not even that).  In this super-light stuff for the last couple days, I've been trying to maximize my progress toward short-term targets where I'm expecting more pressure sooner, rather than following a routing to Hong Kong (although the two usually don't differ by much).

Part of my panicked turn from West to East several days go was due to the realization that routings through that mess would be totally haywire and all plans would require revision every 6 hours.  Impossible to do that efficiently, and guaranteed to go from hero to zero and back twice a day.  Figured I'd rather get to the stability of the trade winds ASAP on the East, and let others take their chances with whether or not they can find a better path through the mess.  I just wish I had decided on that sooner.  I suspect there are unknown boats ahead of me, Toppen, and Gushami...  But there's no way to know.  I just don't think we took the fastest route to where we are.

Hello, firstly, my apologies to hutspot77 who is also on the N of PNG routing and has catapulted into the lead.  However I think performance of the day, and possibly the leg, must go to shockwave11, yesterday he was 3658.6Nm to the leader, today he is 246.6Nm to leader.  According to my sums, that means that he has been averaging 142kts faster than the leader over the last 24hrs.  Who said these VO65s are slow?

Have faith.  The doldrums change with every forecast.  The good news about present conditions sucking is that the next forecast has to be good news.

Thanks.  I'm hoping to put the 4.0's behind me for good in 3 hours when I hit 4.1 again, and if I'm right, I'll be in a rich-getting-richer situation relative to the pack of outstanding boats behind me.  Desperately trying to roll Toppen before then.

If East pays off in the end, it will be very interesting to see how many boats surface that were ahead of me, Toppen, and Gushami all along.  If East doesn't pay off, we'll never know.

Who’ve you got to shag to get on the leaderboard

VR only allow 25 friends so mkgsailor and My grinds groups are full. Please feel free to start another group, I think there may be more people out there who would join up.

BTW I am not going to ask for a photo while I consider your kind offer.

Looks like Your Mom is in a real dog fight in the Clipper. After sitting on the rocks during the first night, I’m happy to have worked my way into the top 1000. The fluky wind conditions are making it hard to stay on the right course during work and sleep.

I've been pretty well locked into second for days, unless Speedo makes a mistake or something happens to open the door for someone taking a flyer to pass both of us.

It’s looking more and more likely that rhe WA boats will take out this leg. I can’t believe how wide rhe doldrums are atm around the Solomons, fast forward 7 days and YM’s group would be in 17kts not 4kts!

90 minutes until the forecast updates again.  If it doesn't change significantly, I'm pretty confident the middle group (following Tessa94) will win.  Limited number of forecast updates remaining before the lottery closes down as boats hit the trade winds.

Annoying because my group looked like the winner up until this latest forecast update.

Although iona29's looked best a day or two ago, so I can't complain.

In other news...  KLM2235 is about to crack the top 50...  he's almost past iona29, who I think is the highest-ranked boat East of PNG.  Should proceed to the top of the leaderboard, and should stay there for a day or two, until the folks who have escaped the doldrums move to the top for good.

I figure we're 3-4 days from seeing the potential winner atop the leaderboard.  Maybe longer if the winner comes from the East.

starting this leg, i thought it was a commercial bullshit leg... not even half way i think it's the first leg where people actually follow different tactical options (except for the silly thought of some friends who africa would pay in the second leg) and with that it's more than just a speed contest.

I did the same thing in the Clipper.  Played pingpong off Tazmania for an hour or so.  I then worked my way under 1500 until last night when I fell asleep earlier and I left my boat on TWA mode.  Went south for a couple hours thanks to the fluky wind BS.  Now I am back in the 3000's.

We’ve still got ours turn in the Indonesian doldrums to come. Looking like it might be close though with boats coming in from everywhere.

I did a check of around 4 groups just prior to the last weather update and when they would finish.  I had Bretling and whoever is with him coming in 1st with us in the Mom crew coming in 4-5 hours behind him.  Long way to go.

Looks like Thistle will go through the Sunda Straits and miss most of the doldrums, in stealth mode now, but that is where they were aiming.

I'm with KLM and Shockwave rounding Bali at the moment. Now it's a bit of a head-scratcher from this point forward. Under no illusion that we'll hold on to the lead for too long, but it was fun while it lasted. With that depression forming off of Singapore, I like Thistle's position!

The heavy air beat to the finish from where I am may ultimately do me in, but it will be fun for a while!

Your route is the route I was aiming for at first, and then as things looked rather grim for all of us West of Australia a few days ago, I figured I'd go straight up for short term glory and a scenic view of Bali! Now you've got a real chance! If Lady Luck doesn't swing things back our way, then I'm rooting for you :P

This might not turn out too badly for you. You’re already starting to see better pressure and once you make the turn in a few hours, I think you’ll start climbing the leaderboard.

After careful consideration we've decided to take Zorro off the evening helm shift.

His shenanigans proved costly last night.

Reminder to self: Double-check course and close VR app before sliding device into pocket.

When I set a zezo course from the Sunda Strait (my guess where Thistle is) I can’t get a course to HK, wtf!

Also make sure you have checked Hong Kong as your destination under “menu” (or right click if using a computer).

Hello,

I have a bit of spare time this morning, so I ran Zezo routings for a few boats to find out the predicted arrival times.  For You Mom it was 149hrs, for shockwave11 it was 174hrs, for me it was 140hrs and for Magool it was also 140hrs.  My finish time has dropped by 29hrs since 12hrs ago, so that gives some indication as to how consistent and accurate these predictions are.  Anyway, here are the 01:00UTC rankings, I believe @mkgsailor will be along shortly with the complete list.

It looks to me that any of the several groups to my West  who remained East of the Bismarck Archipelago are neck and neck to win. The Eastern group I'm in has travelled too far without any wind from a decent angle and will need major luck to get home from here in any sort of decent position. Someone like MarcusBelgicus looking very strong. Its a pity because we looked really good a few days back out here. My tip is Breitling or prowler_1 to take out the SA leg leaderboard

Thats the problem with only having 25 friends allowed, just realised Magool is ahead of both of my tips! Sorry Magool!

We three have been speaking about that possibility since two days ago. We've been working hard against Zezo  :)   Let's see how it pays off.

You guys are looking very strong indeed! But remember, the 'Bali group' was first to hit the 2,000nm DTF mark! Which, of course, counts for absolutely nothing - unless we start accruing points for a polka dot jersey, like they do in the Tour de France at each mountain pass along the way! :P

Well, Captain Sheep is dropping in behind me, so I guess we've at least established that the easternmost group isn't going to beat the second-most easterly.

At least my ranking is dropping now and I have double digit windspeed and boatspeed.  :-)

Judging by the progress and drone vids, I bet the real boats wish they had a 4 knot minimum windspeed.

TR & MKG, thanks again for taking the time to keep all that straight for us. Interesting here several days later we all thought Shockwave & Thistle might be up front for a bit going west! Let's see how it goes!

As usual..I am kinda middling. I can't quite get to the more east guys that are getting into the trades presently (even though they are technically behind me in the latest sked)...I think I will be 24-36 hours behind them as things develop.

I'm pretty sure the latest forecast update just killed the East group.  The middle pack is now likely to gain leverage we can't overcome within the next day.

Going by their DTF I wouldn’t rule out the far west group, it would seem that their ration of 4kt wind has got a lot smaller of late.

Agreed, there is a small area of 4.0kts off the east coast of Sabah, then from the south of Palawan shockwave11 may be able to lay HK slightly cracked off.  It doesn't look like going N of Palawan would pay (although he would get very close to El Nido which is an incredibly beautiful place.  I got dropped off on the beach by a Tayana 55 in 1996 after doing a China Sea Race, and went solo backpacking through Palawan, fantastic trip.)

So I did a calc’ from SKOVSER to the following contenders using DTF, SKOVSER was at 1658nm, Iona29 at 2276 (618 behind), Tessa94 at 2511 (854 behind), and Magool at 2617 (959 behind). Atm the leader is still doing 20 plus knts while all the others are still in single figures. It’s going close!

That's probably what I'm enjoying the most on this leg: passing by some rock in the middle of nowhere, wondering what the heck it is and spending 1/2 hour google mapping the place and looking at all the pictures! Who said armchair traveling was lame! I'm a happy laptop tourist - to a fault, actually. I crashed into one of the Kangean Islands today, North of Bali, while I was happily reading reviews of the place! <facepalm> Now I'm typing 'El Nido' in Palawan and going 'ooh, aah'...

yes you were very lucky you spotted your island mounting so quickly. Each forecast can still be a variance of 20 hrs to the finish for us but its looking about 150 hrs to go atm.

Wohoo!  I got back from a civilised glass of wine with the neighbours on a Friday evening to find that I have double digit boat speed for the first time in months........or at least, that is what it feels like.

Make sure it's not the wine - I always see double after a glass or two!

I have a rough list of lead boats from each of the various routing options, and I'm looking forward to seeing the finish order of these boats.  Here they are, from West to East:

Aspiln
SKOVSER
momcilo
iona29
LJadra
Tessa
Pinkbits
Toppen (or me, I'm not sure because he's in stealth)
Captain Sheep

Groups are starting to consolidate.  Captain Sheep is dropping into line behind Toppen's group, and LJadra is dropping into line behind Tessa's group.  So soon, we'll be down from 9 groups to 7.

I think Tessa's group is going to win, possibly by a lot.  I'm hoping Toppen and I can be next, and that there won't be too many in Tessa's group.  It looks like the door is closing a bit behind Tessa, so some of that group may straggle off the back.

Agree, Tessa94  has been looking pretty better and better over the last 24 hours and going to be very hard to catch, allthough a long way to go still.

I think Breitling & KaptnKirk(Prowler) and I are the 10th group on your list Mom, or are the lead boats for Pinkbits route  albeit a little further westNW now.

Whilst the last 2 forecasts haven't been particularly kind, I am holding out hope for a bit of extra pressure filling in from the east in the next one to catch up or get over the top of Tessa somehow.:D

This gives me hope, I am about 12Nm west of LJadra.

But which Tessa do you mean?  The search function gives two Tessa's; one from Spain who is not participating and one from France who is Bougainville.

Damn, Breitling...  I hadn't seen your position.  Probably better to list you as the leader of the group I tagged as Pinkbits' (unless you know of someone ahead of you).  You're in a great spot.  Well done.  I was thinking we'd declare the Pinkbits group absorbed soon, but you're way ahead of him and might still have a shot at the front.

Revised list, West-to-East:

Aspiln
SKOVSER
momcilo
iona29
LJadra absorbed by Tessa
Tessa
Breitling
Toppen
Captain Sheep absorbed by Toppen

Thanks Mom, we are a small three members SA group in this order:  Magool, Breitling_SA and prowler_1-SA. So Magool is the leader. We've been systematically sailing west of Zezo's suggestions which wanted to guide us behind your group. We diverged from you a bit before Brisbane latitude.

It's going to be really interesting to see who starts popping into the top 50 from where once the group finally gets close enough to HK for the folks East of PNG to be up there.  I suspect there are Easties ahead of me and Toppen, possibly by 10 miles or more.  Who knows who else might be out in front of Magool or Tessa.
