Shorthanded 724 #1801 Posted February 8, 2018 37 minutes ago, wpbeardsley said: The geography lessons have been the best part of Legs 4 and 6 for me. Fun to look at Google Maps and say "what is that thing I'm about to hit?" (or in the case of the Clipper Race, that thing I've been aground on for a few hours). Super interesting leg with the different paths. The folks hugging the Philippines will be at the top of the leaderboard for a few more days. We'll see if they can get across the Doldrums. And we'll see if it's worth sailing several hundred miles in the wrong direction for the hope of going downwind eventually... I created another boat so I can cover the standings for Tunnel Rat while he’s enjoying the powder. The othe boat is heading down along the Philippines while my “real” boat is heading in the opposite direction. It will be interesting to see who wins. And I agree with you that learning more about the geography is kind of fun.
Your Mom 985 #1802 Posted February 8, 2018 Well, that plan didn't work. Now I have a pretty good hole to dig myself out of. At least I won't need to worry about the whole world wanting to follow me wherever I go this leg. A lot of boats would have to drop anchor for an hour or more to follow me now. Your Mom 985 #1834 Posted February 10, 2018 One fun thing about doing these races is that you wind up learning some interesting things about world geography that you wouldn't otherwise notice. I never really had an awareness of the island chain between Japan and Taiwan until now. Pretty cool on Google Earth. Looks like most of them, aside from Okinawa, are mostly forested with a few resorts around coastal roads, not heavily populated. Not all that unlike Hawaii's islands. Anyone know much about these islands? Popular vacation destinations? FWIW, my current plan has me north of the entire Japanese mainland before I eventually turn South. But... it's absurd how many people blindly follow me just because I'm #1 in the world. I get messages in the game all day from people asking me why I turned this way or that way, telling me they're following, etc. I don't really get why you'd do a game like this only to follow another boat the whole way, but ok... anyway... I'm taking a huge risk that will probably fail, so I didn't want thousands of boats following me on a fool's errand. That's all. If you guys want to take a flyer toward Tokyo with me, feel free. Much of the island is within the borders of the Amami Guntō Quasi-National Park. Guess we added to the population temporarily (me). Or maybe permanently (Wet Hog)? Administratively it is divided into the three towns of Tokunoshima, Isen, and Amagi in Kagoshima Prefecture. Much of the island is within the borders of the Amami Guntō Quasi-National Park. The other boats are only updated/moved once you click on them

Your Mom 985 #1868 Posted February 11, 2018 I've been away all day. Just saw the question about the northerly position. Not really confident about it, but following Zezo's primary routing race after race after race gets dull, and I decided after shanking the first night to try something different. I'm trying to do an end-around, potentially getting East of Auckland before crossing the doldrums. I'm hoping the doldrums will be nasty all the way to Auckland's longitude and that I'll be able to pick up something nice for a fast downwind run into Auckland. Looking at Zezo's isochrones, I think it's plausible, but simply risky. Regarding the screwy rankings... I learned a long time ago to not care where VR ranks me until I'm on the final approach to the finish. They have invisible waypoints that drive your DTF, and sometimes you'll have situations where boats who have passed a certain angle from a certain invisible waypoint will jump ahead in DTF until you hit that invisible line. Just worry about getting to the finish as fast as you can, and figure it'll work itself out by the time you get there. Regarding boats jumping ahead when you click on them... It's important to understand that when you leave the screen open in a race, your boat moves forward each minute, but the other boats don't move. They sit wherever they were when you opened the screen. Until you click them... then they advance to whatever their latest position is. So... don't get excited if you see yourself crushing everyone around you... it's because they aren't moving (until you click on them). I frequently exit and re-enter races to force it to update everyone, rather than clicking around to get the updates.

stufishing 217 #1870 Posted February 11, 2018 I've been mainly offline the last 36 hours too. I'm really only running this route because I finished around top 100 in the last edition using this route. Zezo will never pick it for you! I'm looking for code zero use the whole way south! As Mom says, very risky. I'm doing a fair speed, but have a lot further to travel! Fingers crossed
Hike, Bitches! 272 #1871 Posted February 11, 2018 All good Marty, i was just hassling you. Let's hope the sails don't "fail" anymore like they did back in the day..Remember the light spinnaker being the fastest and blowing up in the Southern Ocean?

Marty6 400 #1873 Posted February 11, 2018 Chain of small islands in front of me and most of the northern group. I hope i don't repeat my sushi pitstop Don't forget to zoom in
Magool 76 #1874 Posted February 11, 2018 Hi again all, just got home from a weekend regatta, tired, salty and pleasantly surprised that I didn't hit an island on the way through the islands of Japan. My only concern was I didn't manage to stay the eastern most/ (then) southern most boat in the north group as I was planning, but the beer was flowing and plenty of tales on the bar so as long as I am behind that front - happy days for now. I note the same protagonists from last leg are there or there abouts. Nice job Breitling, you seem to be smashing it so far!

stufishing 217 #1877 Posted February 11, 2018 yeah, i think you are right. I can't imagine anyone's going faster than me at the moment either!
Breitling 129 #1878 Posted February 11, 2018 Thanks Magool. Not an easy one, I've been dismissing all Zezo suggestions from about 36 hours ago, it depicts the front and wind change 3 hours behind of where I am. He wants me to tack south (it supposes I am ahead of the front). So I switched off Zezo and rely on weather forecast outputs from different sources (mainly GFS which is what the game uses). My plan is to gain as much east as I can before diving southeast in a couple days. I'm also living a nightmare with sail changes. No autosail at all, I prefer to go on the wrong sail for a while (0.3 kt), if not it changes 4 times each hour...

Mid 2,839 #1881 Posted February 11, 2018 3rd question Anybody running foils ?
HKG1203 306 #1882 Posted February 11, 2018 @Mid yes I've been weaving up and down and gybing for the last few hours as it will make no difference because of the stupid front ahead of us anyway. Got scared after seeing marcusbelgicus and sideshow gybe when i was only using my phone so couldn't look at routing properly so i gybed to follow. Looks like I should have just left it as is. Mid 2,839 #1883 Posted February 11, 2018 ^ that leads to Q#4 who's using what to play the game pc v phone ?
HKG1203 306 #1884 Posted February 11, 2018 I use both but tend to bring my computer with me so i can use routing (yes i have lost all my friends since the race begun ) If i can't bring my computer then i'll use my phone. Been also using predict wind a bit for routing in this leg and the portugal to South Africa leg where it is useful to use the ECMWF model as well as i find it tends to be more accurate at long range forecasting although that may just be BS. Rainbow Spirit 284 #1885 Posted February 11, 2018 I only use the phone when I can't get to the PC, I find the phone way too small and fidderly for my failing eyes and ham fisted fingers.

Marty6 400 #1887 Posted February 11, 2018 @Mid: Will also fess up: The combo of C0 and foils is not completely cost free, but i've accumulated over 9500 credits with all the different races by now so i can invest some into the VOR legs. All the other races, besides the VOR, i only use the credit provided for those races and basically always only go for the C0 and using the remaining race specific credit for programmation cards. So haven't used any real money yet. My cards (some programmation cards are bought with credits): I'm playing mainly on the PC (Chrome + VR dashboard) to use easier routing and the tablet during the night or when away from home.
