VOR '17-'18 - THE GAME

The hope of Mom cracking is low.......

Not true.  I take risks from time to time (and run aground occasionally), and the competition is strong enough that one bad mistake can give me a 20+ score, and with that 51 throwout, whatever I do would count.  Also, the entirety of Leg 10 will occur while I'm racing in Flying Scot North Americans, so I was considering skipping that leg, which would make the 51 count.  (I guess I'd probably at least do it on credits and try to post something in the 30s or 40s... and I might still do it with the full pack, but can't expect to perform well).

Never give up!

Less than 7 days to the start of the next leg, what time will it be for everyone? For me it will be 3am, Monday morning, so a auto start for me.

Noon in Central US time.  Very convenient.  Plenty of time to get set up to sleep well the first night, too.  I figure all of the remaining starts for both VOR and Clipper will be convenient for North and South America, Europe, South Africa, etc.  Not so good for Australia, New Zealand, Asia, etc.

To wrap up leg 7, tommmzzz remained impaled on Tierra Del Fuego, so the last posted results stand.  No one has notified me of any errors, so I am going to pretend that there are none.

Leg 8 starts at the extremely convenient time of 01:00 here.  It looks like a low wind beat for the first few days, then dealing with the heffalump traps of the conditions south of Recife.  I suspect that this portion could easily ruin someone's race as I suspect that forecasts will be inaccurate and changes will be swift.

I'm looking forward to it.  See you at the start line.

My Volvo starts at 1am in Perth and TransAt 7pm. Looks like we share a meridian.

So a 3am start for me, I'll be heading off on a heading of around 80 degrees, then 3 hours later at 6am local time I'll get up and fine tune it if needed.

This time i used my earned credits to buy the full sail wardrobe and the foils. Everything is stowed on board and the crew is ready to go. I hope they don't get confused with the larger number of sails available ;)

Big light wind area north of the start, all the way to Rio.  First goal is to get East, not to point at Rio and get into that light stuff.  A few hours into it, the wind will come forward and you'll be close-hauled, and then it's a decision of how fare East to go before tacking.

Then it becomes a matter of deciding how many times to tack, and how far offshore from the shoulder of Brazil to go North.  This leg can have several different strategies for what to do after clearing Brazil, and positioning yourself for whichever strategy you want probably starts ~4 days into the leg.

BTW...  If anyone has an urge just to see themselves at the top of the leg leaderboard, at the cost of their chances later in the leg, it should be do-able by tacking early.  Like 12-16 hours into the leg instead of 21-28.  In the last edition of VOR, I did that and had great fun cutting inside the island of Ilhabela (a bit WSW of Rio).  I was in first place for most of a day after that, and then things went downhill from there.  Back then, I had never led anything before, let alone won anything, so I was ecstatic to be at the top of a VOR leg leaderboard for a few hours.  I think I still have a screenshot of it somewhere.

LET'S GO BITCHES!

The 1300 start is interestingly at exactly the same time as the first gun for our Spring Invitational today. I am skipping it, I did a distance race yesterday and have stuff to do around the house..like virtual sailing and stuff! :P

Seems like VR changed the application for the current races. On the VR dashboard i get the heading now reported without any 1/10 degrees (e.g. 117 or 118). Looks like the slight heading differences for different boats while being set to the same heading are gone.

Well, I completely screwed that up. I was heavily immersed in a nonskid project and forgot about the start. At least the deck looks nice.

Ok, so 1/10 degree heading is still in the game. Appeared when changing to TWA sailing in the Transat.

It is too bloody hot here, only half your temperature, but in sensible units.

Deck is looking great.  when do you splash down?

Right, sensible units. 15.5 C. I won’t splash until mid May. Still a lot to do to get Shorty ready. And, with a water temp of 3C, I’m not in a hurry to get her in.

Ha!  See my post below. Our water temp isn’t much above freezing. Up north, freighters (1000 footers) have been stuck in ice. The ice breaker fleet has been busy!

A recent view from my brother’s ship.

Annapolis buoy reported 0.0000 wind speed yesterday which put an abrupt end to the consideration of dunking the boat and going sailing. Still unfathomable about the number of decimal points.

Hello,

I hope these rankings from 01:00UTC make sense.  A whole new computer system to play with and different method of getting these numbers, so please let me know if they are wrong.

Yes I think that Mom tacked and tacked early, but not as early as wpbeardsley who has got a jump on the pack, at least in terms of the numbers that are given out.

@HKG1203 - yes I am happy with my position, but I am certain that there are people ahead of me.  We will see how things play out when the header arrives in a few hours.

I am taking time off from patching the gaping hole in my port bow caused by the recklessness of YM to bring you the rankings for Group A.

It seems that ColombaRacing has taken the opportunity to check on the latest fashions on the Brazilian beaches and has consequently jumped into a significant lead.  I suspect that he will quickly lose focus and will plunge down the rankings as he is unable to remove his eyes from his binoculars and the drag of his tongue in the water slows the boat to a crawl.

After 7 hours prettyhatemachine has finished whatever he was doing on the beach and has headed offshore.  Remarkably he is still in 2nd place on the Group A rankings.  Will his activities ashore have caused long term exhaustion, or will they provide a spark of energy?

when you split from sideshow you know you're doing something wrong yet i continue to do it...

One thing to know about Zezo is that it usually won't route you away from your destination.  I mean...  It'll recognize routes that start with very low CMGs that eventually pay dividends...  but it won't investigate negative CMGs.  I suspect that Sideshow and the others who drove off more South were going into an area Zezo didn't want to consider.  I took an early tack, thinking I might get some leverage, and was terribly wrong.  I'm trying to dig out of a pretty bad hole now.  Good thing we have a long way to go.  I think my extra Easting will help.  No tacks now for a long time...

I’m just happy to be in the pack with Sideshow, Tessa, Mom, Rainbow, Breitling, Saphire Girl and Big Bird. Cheers everyone!

Anyone know where the diesel propulsion button is on the VOR game page? I'm getting sick of trailing the leaders in our group by about 10nm...

I’ll follow up Shorty. While the pic looks good, it’s 6.7  C here in west Michigan.

Talk about digging yourself out of a big hole @Your Mom, I am paying the price for staying high and straight lining out of the overnight (for me start) and then not optimising a couple of overnight tacks, so I was too high, and now I am too east  So if you are in a hole I have fallen into a crevasse, but plenty of race to go

Apologies for the delay in posting.  We had a fun evening despite the cold temps.  A quick power boat ride to the north side of Lake Macatawa dropped us off at Bayshore Yacht club  for the spring series skipper's meeting followed by a nice presentation from the Quantum team.  Looks like ColombaRacing was successful in pulling his tongue out of the water and left the Brazilian scenery behind.
