Even with the zig zags at the beginning no chance for the pink boat. I think my time will be around 4 days 3 hours. And there are even better boats like @Your Mom on their current attempt.

You guys are doing great, I missed the window, started about 3-4hrs behind and have watched you guys sail away with a good system.

I was going to post an update this evening but this consumed my day. Finally launched and we’re prepping for our last two races, then she’s sold.  Now in the market for a new boat. Recommendations are welcome. Next boat will ideally be less than 10 years old, wife friendly down below, but still fast. Current boat rates 75 in PHRF.  I don’t have an IRC rating, but it would be 1.065, or slightly higher based on a sistership.

I have a wife friendly down below too

Nice one, Guf. I knew I had opened a can of worms after typing that.

shorty: J-109? asym and below decks well appointed

Thanks, 4010. I have it on the list as it checks a lot of the boxes and we still have a decent one design section in the Mac race, although some are racing non OD now in ORR optimized trim going for the overall. While they are more than 10 years old, there are still a few that have been well cared for.

Tunnel I am having a terrible leg,  I am still out there.  Golf and and a family VayKay are my excuses.  Probably a little Karma mixed in there too for poking Hike Bitches in the eye after my win over him last leg.

Trump was never going to invite me to the Whitehouse anyway, cause I am Canadian, but maybe HB will have me over to his garage

Sorry about that, I noted you as having finished...... Obviously user error.

Now corrected.

is this up through oban?

Oban is slightly south of where I first went aground on the Scottish mainland, I went inside Mull, bounced of Eigg and then inside Skye, although I did not expect to get through the Kyle of Lochalsh.  A similar setting to the gap you squeezed through to get into Gothenburg.

Lastly I stuck my nose into Durness after round Cape Wrath, but that is off the map.

It looks like Zezo is not modelling the route correctly, which should make things interesting.

Please can someone with access to the "gate" information, post if there are any hidden gates on any of the islands that are not obvious marks of the course.  The main one I am concerned about is Laesø, (I am afraid I can't do diphthongs) which is to the SW of Gothenburg on the return leg from Samsø.  The white line goes to the east of Laesø, but the shortest route is to the west, especially in the forecast westerly winds.

Thanks,
TR

Come on HKG, get serious.  No sleep and hand steering 24/7.  We need commitment.

I posted that question in the Zezo forum a few days ago, and Xeelee said..

"In fact there are six hidden hidden gates. But all of them are stretching the whole water-space, so they are only there for ranking/dtf calculations and to ensure the correct rounding of Samsø and Skagen."

I don't think it'll be concerned about which side of Leaso you go.

I'm just bummed about the spit of land that blocks the river at Aggersund.  Without that, I'd love to see a handful of boats cut the corner through there.

Can you clarify what you mean by Zezo not modelling the route correctly?  It looks ok to me, but so far I'm just routing to Samso.

BTW...  The official route has been adjusted four times in the last week.  I just posted a comment about it in the real leg's thread, with a link to the SI's.  So...  everyone needs to be prepared for the possibility that VR could suddenly change the course to be sailed.  I don't think they will...  they usually prefer to stick with the original route even if the real route changes...  but they're not entirely predictable.

It looks like the game's route is quite different from the actual route...  I'm not sure why.  This might be why Tunnel Rat was reporting Zezo as being wrong...  but I think Zezo matches the game's route, unless I'm missing something.

I believe the actual route goes from Gothenburg up to South Norway, and then down to Aarhus, leaving Laeso and Silderon to starboard.  Then back up to the South Norway mark, and then on to The Hague.

On the other hand, the virtual race has no concern for the South Norway mark, nor Aarhus, nor Laeso or Silderon...  But requires us to round Samso, which isn't a mark of the real course at all.

my zezo page isn't showing a starting line in Gothenburg. Any reason why

Sometimes in multi-leg events, it reverts your starting point to whatever location you last entered as a routing start point for your approach to the finish in the prior leg, unless you clear all of your cookies, etc.  Easiest is to just go into the race, pick up your lat/lon, and plug it into Zezo.

The exclusion zones for the real boats on this leg are outrageous. Every boat will need a crew member 100% assigned to making sure they dodge those areas proper! And yeah, I imagine their course has been lengthened to optimize arrival time in Aarhus and The Hague...

In Zezo, if you start at Gothenburg and finish at The Hague, then it gives you a straight line course without leaving Samsø  to starboard.

I'm looking forward to the decisions made by @HKG1203 under the influence of severe sleep deprivation.

So for the virtual race, it is round the island and to the Hague. Thursday start is horrible; in the middle of work week.

Ah.  Ok.  I can explain that.

Zezo has limitations.  It can't route backwards, in terms of straight-line course from your current position to the specified destination.  Cvetan CAN set it up with "gates" to block it from considering the direct route, but apparently hasn't in this case (I don't notice because I almost always turn "ignore gates" on).  But even if he did that, it wouldn't work in this case.  The gate would need to be something like...  "Don't route North of Samso until you're West of Samso"...  Aside from that causing it to fail to consider routes to Samso that go West of Samso en route, as well as routes from Samso to the North that go East of Samso, the bottom line is that it would dead-end at Samso....  because after rounding Samso, the route would be a doubling back relative to your point of origin.  It simply isn't able to do that.

So...  You need to route to Samso at the start.  That will work just fine.  And then route to The Hague after getting to Samso, and not expect to be able to do so prior.

If you particularly want a routing to The Hague before reaching Samso, then you need to set a starting point somewhere SE of Samso, like near Rostock, Germany...  a place where your ETA at Samso would be comparable to the ETA Zezo gives you for Samso from Gothenburg.  Zezo will then be able to consider routings from that ETA at Samso onward to The Hague, because it won't view that course as "doubling back".

Since I'll be awake and hopefully online when I reach Samso, I'm not making my life complicated...  I'm routing to Samso and planning to sort the rest out later.

The subtleties of how Zezo handles these kinds of things are essential for a good performance in coastal events, and are part of how/why I tend to do better in coastal events than in open water.

In game countdown is 1 day slow? I think race starts in 9 or so hours doesn't it?. In game countdown timer says 1 day 9 hours. I am stuffed for this race, have to be asleep for start due to drive early next morning, then out of range  for some of next day.

Hmmmmmm.  The countdown on the tile where you select the race is currently saying 8hrs and a bit.  Once you click on the race, the countdown in the usual screen is saying 1 day 8hrs and a bit.  Marvellous VR!

BTW - I'm doing this race on credits, with a reasonable credit budget for navigation cards.

I have a 10pm start, so a lot of wpts for me in the first 10 hours, I find that using wpts lets you scrap past the shores without running aground, assuming there are no VR glitches of cause.

There are still some chances there :)

The last leg is not gonna be pretty for me. I’ll be out on the water out of cell range for a good bit of this leg.

Just left Holland heading across the lake to Milwaukee. Better get some programming done before I’m out of cell range.

I think most distortions occur when traveling east or west at high latitudes, north or south tend not to be as distorted, at least that's what I'm led to believe. Then again I have been known to be wrong...

The countdown for the race on the tile and in the leg on the left side shows the correct time for me (~1h 20m from now). There is a countdown with an extra day but it is for the discount on the full pack purchase.

The prices vary by country and currency and by whether you buy in the app store vs a desktop machine.  But then I think the app store applies taxes whereas direct purchase I think doesn't, so the app store isn't cheaper by as much as it appears.  But yeah...  you can save a bit (at least in the US) by buying through the app store.

Frustrating that the virtual course is so much shorter than the real course.  We'll be done with this thing in a day and a half.

And starting in the middle of a week! I guess it's better though my weekends are filled with actual instead of virtual sailing, hopefully we get this done before my racing Saturday :-)

I just saw Yodaman, Awkward Turtle and Your Mom making up the 1, 2, 3 overall.

Nice work guys.

Thanks.  Between 1 and 4 AM my time, there was a stretch where the wind came forward and then went aft again.  I straight-lined it to sleep.  It looks like boats that went up before the header, or down with the header, to avoid sailing lower than about TWA 50, passed me.  I'll put up a decent finish, but my chance at a top-10 is gone.  Such is life.  I wasn't willing to be up all night for this one.

Frustrating that the ranking update cycle makes people's position bounce up and down so much.  I could be anywhere from 10th to 60th right now.  No way to know until it spreads out more (which won't happen in the time we have left) or we finish.

Ditto! Went from top 5 to 20-30 while asleep. Blast toward the finish with not much passing left.

Yeah, great work guys - what a showing! For my part, one mistake early on sealed my fate but I'm actually plotting my way MUCH closer to land on this leg than I've ever done, so I think I've overcome my fear of rocks! Well, some. Look out, I'm ready for leg 12 - oh, wait...

I thought I had you and then my boat was promptly bounced back outside the circle for an excruciating extra minute or so (you guys know why this sort of thing happens?). In the end, it looks like you got me by 10 sec! Good hiking bitch!

Big THANK YOU to the scorekeepers - and actually to all of you guys as well for adding that extra bit of human touch and group competition to what would otherwise be a dry, faceless virtual race experience. Makes all the difference in the world!
