VOR '17-'18 - THE GAME

Recommended Posts

Well..thanks for that..it came from a J/29 regatta back in the day at Key West Race Week in like 1999..we'd been last all week, and even though we were bringing up the rear, we had a great team effort and made a nice move at the bottom mark and passed a boat or two, and I got up on the rail and said, 'Hey we just picked up a boat and we are not last, so Hike, Bitches!' We ended up 9th or 10th out of 10 boats in the regatta but that moment of glory was great..

My avatar is actually a picture of all of us hiking our asses off on the J/29 'Rhumb Punch', and we won that class a few years later at the now defunct KWRW. Hike your ass off until you can't hold the heavy#1 upwind even while feathering the mainsail and then hold on downwind!!!

But, none of that really matters when you are racing in the Florida Keys in January and not freezing your ass off in Maryland. Florida in January = better than Maryland in January.

Here's to hoping that Key West Race Week comes back and lives another day!!! (or week!!)

Here’s a look at a group of us to the West, and only those that are on the B group list above. Interesting to compare this view with the leaderboard. East is king in the rankings for now. I like where I am right now, pretty happy for the moment.

Thanks for the rankings Tunnell & Mkgsailor, apparently the algorithm didn't like my angle west last night...from 12nm in front of Breitling to 30nm behind!

Ok, I've been west for a while now and have yet to be included in your pictures.  Where is the love?  ;)

I will say I am a bit annoyed.  I was the furthest west of the SA'ers for a while and then my goodnight course screwed me.  Gybe Turkey and HKG came my way on hotter angles and now I am following those 2.  Regardless, sleep > VORG.

You are in the "A" group with TR. I've only go the "B" Group in my friends list. We are limited to 25 internet friends at a time. Which is nice, because my wife is going to be pissed when I tell her to send Christmas cards to 25 A-Holes I've never met.

The only boat I can ever see around me is Your Mom.  Which is a bit unnerving.  Every time he twitches I second guess my route.

I'm trying to ignore him and sail my own race but it is hard knowing his track record.

anyone you add into your friends list will always show up. It makes it interesting seeing people from here rather than a random assortment.

I’m with you, it’s hard to see him climb the leaderboard right now. I know it’s because he’s more east, but I also know his decisions aren’t random and uncalculated like mine.

Does the game take current into account?

No it does not. Would be nice though. One edition  going round Sri Lanka i think it was, people cut right in close to land against big current in light wind and passed those like myself who were off further looking for breeze. The expedition routings were wildly different to the game routings.

Hello, very close to the equator.  I hope Neptune does unspeakable things to all those who deserve it, like those to the south of me (Yes, I mean Stu and Mom.....)

Rankings from 23:30UTC.  The western group has been overtaken by many in the central gang who are quite a bit further north.  It will all sort itself out eventually.

EDIT - can anyone inform a self-confessed Luddite how to take a screen shot and post it here - Thanks.

One hour before i get to the south! and then the big question, which side of the high to go. There seem to be two very distinct groups one of which going to the north and east of the high and the other south and west. Zezo keeps flicking between the two so it must be quite close between them. Probably will be the most interesting section of this leg.

Simultaneously push both the home button and the top "sleep" button.  If you do it correctly you will hear a camera click. Gotta do both together

Don't stress too much about my antics.  I've had a few over-reactions to forecast updates, resulting in sharp turns.  Mostly just trying to hit the doldrums with the most wind I could find.  I'm happy to be in a position that could work out well, but I'm not any more confident in my own position than I'd be with any other position along the leading edge of the fleet.

I'm very beatable.  But you won't beat me by following me.  :-)

Keep up the screen shots, I love watching the VORG, but this time around that's about as far as I want to go. When they go back to a 'normal' way to play the game I might come back.

BTW - If you're using Zezo, don't forget to change the N to a S when you cross the equator.  Sounds obvious, but I've had races where my routings got increasingly confusing for a couple hours before I realized my point of origin was increasingly on the wrong side of the planet.

The younger members of the crew look quite orderly with their matching half shaved heads. The girls arent happy, i think they would have preferred some of the options the more seasoned crew members were suggesting.

Here’s the latest from the B group. Looks like we’re bunching up a bit more. East is still king in the rankings.

1. Walkaround - African coast

2. Ozzy- African coast

3. Iluvitar- shown below

4. ON9270 - 315 miles NE of me

5. Kea.nn - just behind ON9270

6. Hschutz- African coast

7. Your Mom - shown

8.  Prowler - shown

9. ThijsK - shown

18. HKG1203 - shown

It seems like the race leaders are still close to 48 hours from crossing the equator, while a bunch of us crossed 24 hours ago.

I've enjoyed reading mom's comments about these being downwind boats.

Its so tempting to point a little higher, cut a corner ect, because I think it's going to be faster........ but in the end it's not. It's just a big downwind sleigh ride

It's just making us wait longer and longer untill we see the beautiful gains against the east group! Looking forward to when we do finally see them ahah. It is also looking like the leading boats may get away from the main bunch if they can catch the front of the low coming through and the others don't.

compromised a bit on sailing, since I was chillng for ten days with my father in Spain... 25 degrees in the sun during the day (at home in the Netherlands 10-12 degrees with rain and wind from what I heard) playing golf a lot and enjoying nice food and drinks. woke up every morning with a view over see (east side of Spain) now back to racing!

Ive sent them a support ticket asking them about adding the yacht club since that post.  They say they will once they get to it.

I check just about every day to see if they add it, but not yet.  They have added new yacht clubs (like Sails'N Sun) recently so there is hope.  Maybe they will add it by the time we get to Auckland.  ;)

Also just realized I still have all the position reports and other stuff from the last edition on this computer.  I miss the old layout and controls:

Ive sent them a support ticket asking them about adding the yacht club since that post.  They say they will once they get to it.

I check just about every day to see if they add it, but not yet.  They have added new yacht clubs (like Sails'N Sun) recently so there is hope.  Maybe they will add it by the time we get to Auckland.  ;)

Also just realized I still have all the position reports and other stuff from the last edition on this computer.  I miss the old layout and controls:

I really miss the overview with all the other boats...

Looks like the east boats of the west group (your Mom) are going to smoke it here. I fear i am going to get wrecked as we get closer to the southern ocean depressions. Only time will tell if i can keep my south enough to stay in the pressure more in the future.

You're in Stealth mode, so it's hard to know...  Are you ahead of Toppen?

Best boat I know of is Marcusbelgicus.  He's a bit ESE of me.

Yes he is the one i am concerned about as well. Been running routings for us both all day but they seem to be coming closer and closer. I am a bit on my own right now as i went ghost to shift back eastwards after deciding not to go bow down like sideshow and iona. The ECMWF didn't seem too keen on that in the long run which is what i have been running off for long term stuff. I was a mile or two ahead of toppen before i split now I am 10 miles south west of XC Race.

On A Side note: Keep all your eyes out for taberly-AVL. He's doing best from the west quite possibly!

Good find.  Taberly is just ahead of Toppen, and I'm not aware of anyone doing better over there.  If I can cross Taberly, I'll be pretty happy, even if Marcus winds up ahead of me.  We seem to both be doing pretty well, but it's going to be really hard to have confidence until we pass Mialo and the others on the current Top 50 leaderboard...  which might still take a week.  I'm still pretty confident we'll beat those guys by 2-3 days or more, but I'm not confident about being ahead of them before the final 700 nm of the race or so.

Hello,

01:00UTC rankings.  Walkaround is on a hideous angle heading 233 at 60°TWA.  It could be a loooooooong beat for him and Ozzy.  The western gang continue the reach south with a bit of jostling for position.  The critical thing is the positioning of the high to the south-east of our current position.  If remains stationary then the western guys should reap their reward, if the high shifts further east, then the easterners will be looking good.

Thank you very much, sir.  Most decent.  Here is something to help you, a screen shot taken at about 02:30UTC, only the western gang in my list.

EDIT - this does not include Rule69 and Hike Bitches who are scrapping it out to the NE of FdN, Walkaround and Ozzy who are tacking through the Gulf of Guinea and Cambodunum who is in Stealth mode :ph34r:  EDIT 2 - Wing it and shockwave are also missing - they are locked together about 15Nm to the west of Vibroman.

Combined Leader board from 1:00 UTC. Lots of movement on this version.

Any bets on when Walkaround and Ozzy lose the top two spots?

2 hours till i reappear! It seems that i have done pretty well overnight and zezo has got us starting to bear away off the 110 angles quite soon which should be good for me as i can hopefully cut the corner on the more easterly boats on the next gybe. The big question will be whether or not we can all get across taberly and swedesailor who are both looking on top from the west group. I had a 0.5 mile lead on taberly and 1.5 on swede last time we were together so that will be a good indicator. As per the east boats the routing still has them coming home 3 days behind us so nothing to worry about, yet!

Will be days before the Eastern group relinquish their "lead" on the leaderboard. They are still 1300 nautical miles closer to Cape town as the crow flies.
