      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Tunnel Rat - This would be a little easier if we both had whoever the current leader is on our list. Then I wouldn't have to convert the distance to my leader from the distance to your leader. What do you say we both leave a spot open in our friends list for the leader, in case he isn't regularly in our group?

I'll dump Breitling and you dump ThijsK. They are on both lists anyway. Then, for the time being anyway, you add Walkaround. If there is a leader change, we both have that leader.

Sound good?

It looks like the leg leader, Nessaig ran aground. How do you let that happen while you are in 1st place?

I can't imagine he did run aground, there is no way he would still be out in front after that. Tricky sailing for the coast crowd.

I'm out. I've been playing Virtual Regatta since the creation of the game (I remember the first virtual Vendee!), but this card system and the weather forecast that you have to unlock is getting on my nerves. I'm not serious enough to use Zezo, and I hate feeling milked by this random-lootboxes system (and I paid for all the options for some Vendees...)

I'm kind of sad as I really like the emulation I found in this SA group of virtual sailors. And I loved looking at the weather forecast, as it helps me understand the choices made by the boats in real life.

Bye, and fair winds to you all!

Sorry to hear you are out, but understand completely.

I will take you off the list when another person wants to actively join as @mkgsailor and my lists are now full.

Cheers TR

I saw him pointing nw for about 5 minutes. Then back to what he’s doing now. Maybe just some strange glitch. You’re probably right.

You'd be surprised how often it happens with the top-ranked boats.  I've hit the bricks several times.  I was in one race where the 16 of the top 20 hit the same spot.  Combination of reasons...  One is that if you want to compete at the top level while short-tacking along a coast where the wind is shifting to make you want to get close...  you push it.  Because you know if you don't, someone else will.  Second thing is that the new cartography is sometimes a little funky.  Sometimes the land isn't quite exactly where you think it is (although they've really improved that...  Six months ago, I ran aground in blue water).  The third reason is that they have "gust mode" in this, where the windspeed your boat experiences isn't quite exactly what the forecast said, so if you use programmation to plot a course, you won't necessarily be exactly where you thought you were going to be.  Final reason...  He's European and it's like 4 AM there, and people have to sleep sometime.

With all that said...  He has a good lead on second, and he has to know he's going to get passed by the freight train to the West eventually, so I'm a little surprised he wasn't a bit more conservative.  I think he's pushing it to try to do justice to the endeavor.  Gotta respect that.

The weather routing is very ambiguous with what it thinks is going to be the best option from here on in now we are in the southern atlantic (basically!) Would not be surprised to see the etreme east and west boats take flyers and see who comes out on top at the end. Will probably only be a few miles but could finally see some splits between the front runners again.

Hello, 23:00UTC rankings.  The eastern group of Walkaround and Ozzy are still hanging on to their lead while the western group get more westing in.  The easterners have 4kt headwinds in their near future, so I have doubts whether they will be able to hang on for another day.

Well..thanks for that..it came from a J/29 regatta back in the day at Key West Race Week in like 1999..we'd been last all week, and even though we were bringing up the rear, we had a great team effort and made a nice move at the bottom mark and passed a boat or two, and I got up on the rail and said, 'Hey we just picked up a boat and we are not last, so Hike, Bitches!' We ended up 9th or 10th out of 10 boats in the regatta but that moment of glory was great..

My avatar is actually a picture of all of us hiking our asses off on the J/29 'Rhumb Punch', and we won that class a few years later at the now defunct KWRW. Hike your ass off until you can't hold the heavy#1 upwind even while feathering the mainsail and then hold on downwind!!!

But, none of that really matters when you are racing in the Florida Keys in January and not freezing your ass off in Maryland. Florida in January = better than Maryland in January.

Here's to hoping that Key West Race Week comes back and lives another day!!! (or week!!)

Here’s a look at a group of us to the West, and only those that are on the B group list above. Interesting to compare this view with the leaderboard. East is king in the rankings for now. I like where I am right now, pretty happy for the moment.

Ok, I've been west for a while now and have yet to be included in your pictures.  Where is the love?  ;)

I will say I am a bit annoyed.  I was the furthest west of the SA'ers for a while and then my goodnight course screwed me.  Gybe Turkey and HKG came my way on hotter angles and now I am following those 2.  Regardless, sleep > VORG.

You are in the "A" group with TR. I've only go the "B" Group in my friends list. We are limited to 25 internet friends at a time. Which is nice, because my wife is going to be pissed when I tell her to send Christmas cards to 25 A-Holes I've never met.

The only boat I can ever see around me is Your Mom.  Which is a bit unnerving.  Every time he twitches I second guess my route.

I'm trying to ignore him and sail my own race but it is hard knowing his track record.

anyone you add into your friends list will always show up. It makes it interesting seeing people from here rather than a random assortment.

I’m with you, it’s hard to see him climb the leaderboard right now. I know it’s because he’s more east, but I also know his decisions aren’t random and uncalculated like mine.

Does the game take current into account?

No it does not. Would be nice though. One edition  going round Sri Lanka i think it was, people cut right in close to land against big current in light wind and passed those like myself who were off further looking for breeze. The expedition routings were wildly different to the game routings.

Hello, very close to the equator.  I hope Neptune does unspeakable things to all those who deserve it, like those to the south of me (Yes, I mean Stu and Mom.....)

Rankings from 23:30UTC.  The western group has been overtaken by many in the central gang who are quite a bit further north.  It will all sort itself out eventually.

EDIT - can anyone inform a self-confessed Luddite how to take a screen shot and post it here - Thanks.

One hour before i get to the south! and then the big question, which side of the high to go. There seem to be two very distinct groups one of which going to the north and east of the high and the other south and west. Zezo keeps flicking between the two so it must be quite close between them. Probably will be the most interesting section of this leg.

Don't stress too much about my antics.  I've had a few over-reactions to forecast updates, resulting in sharp turns.  Mostly just trying to hit the doldrums with the most wind I could find.  I'm happy to be in a position that could work out well, but I'm not any more confident in my own position than I'd be with any other position along the leading edge of the fleet.

I'm very beatable.  But you won't beat me by following me.  :-)

BTW - If you're using Zezo, don't forget to change the N to a S when you cross the equator.  Sounds obvious, but I've had races where my routings got increasingly confusing for a couple hours before I realized my point of origin was increasingly on the wrong side of the planet.

I'm up in the SA lead pack- not seeing you guys in the search... me thinks it's broken again.  I got kicked out of my log in for about 6 hours last night, looks like I'm logged back in.

Your offerings seem to be working, what did you sacrifice?

The younger members of the crew look quite orderly with their matching half shaved heads. The girls arent happy, i think they would have preferred some of the options the more seasoned crew members were suggesting.

Here’s the latest from the B group. Looks like we’re bunching up a bit more. East is still king in the rankings.

1. Walkaround - African coast

2. Ozzy- African coast

3. Iluvitar- shown below

4. ON9270 - 315 miles NE of me

5. Kea.nn - just behind ON9270

6. Hschutz- African coast

7. Your Mom - shown

8.  Prowler - shown

9. ThijsK - shown

18. HKG1203 - shown

It seems like the race leaders are still close to 48 hours from crossing the equator, while a bunch of us crossed 24 hours ago.

I've enjoyed reading mom's comments about these being downwind boats.

Its so tempting to point a little higher, cut a corner ect, because I think it's going to be faster........ but in the end it's not. It's just a big downwind sleigh ride

It's just making us wait longer and longer untill we see the beautiful gains against the east group! Looking forward to when we do finally see them ahah. It is also looking like the leading boats may get away from the main bunch if they can catch the front of the low coming through and the others don't.

I submitted the Sailing Anarchy Yacht club last week so we all could join it and keep track of our progress that way.  Gave them the Ed's email address and Carlsbad, CA as the location but they haven't added it.  Then a couple days ago, figuring they wouldn't add something like Sailing Anarchy Yacht Club, I submitted the South Annapolis Yacht Association (I think thats what I worded it, could be wrong).  Completely made up yacht club but it is SAYA for short so SA would be in it.  Still nothing.  Maybe they will add one or both after this leg.  Maybe.

I searched for these but couldnt find them. Not surprising really....

Nice try Wethog, perhaps they will add them by the next edition, if it happens!

Hello.  Here are the 00:00UTC rankings.

I was starting to feel quite happy about being the easternmost of the western pack, but now I'm starting to have doubts.  I'm praying for the timing of the next low to be faster than expected!  It should be a fun run in to Cape Town

compromised a bit on sailing, since I was chillng for ten days with my father in Spain... 25 degrees in the sun during the day (at home in the Netherlands 10-12 degrees with rain and wind from what I heard) playing golf a lot and enjoying nice food and drinks. woke up every morning with a view over see (east side of Spain) now back to racing!

Ive sent them a support ticket asking them about adding the yacht club since that post.  They say they will once they get to it.

I check just about every day to see if they add it, but not yet.  They have added new yacht clubs (like Sails'N Sun) recently so there is hope.  Maybe they will add it by the time we get to Auckland.  ;)

Also just realized I still have all the position reports and other stuff from the last edition on this computer.  I miss the old layout and controls:
